“Humans are capable of amazing behavior at both ends of the moral spectrum”.

When a young boy, John Frears met a strange man who gave him a picture of his granddaughter and told John “if you are the one, you’ll need it”. The one what? It took several years to find out what the man meant.

Virginia Chester was worried about her father Dodge after her brother Donnie’s suicide. Who is this friend of Donnie’s, and can he help her father slay his demons?

Hayley Roth may finally have a chance at a new life, but her husband Larry is a bad cop on a downhill slide who may take her down with him.

Larry Roth made a mistake and "mortality had never been so clearly defined". He can't go back and make it go away and he needs to set everything straight with his wife no matter the consequences.

Joey DeCecco’s partner is a dangerous cop who is coming unglued and Joey has to protect his young family at all costs.

All of these people are brought together under unusual circumstances that will change their lives forever.

This book was a little slow to start, but once the characters were introduced the story unfolded into a fast-paced, suspense thriller with some unexpected twists. Along with the suspense Pepper adds some humor and romance to give it some balance which worked well in the story.

Thank you to Mr. Pepper, Urbane Publications and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
