Dr. Kate Hanson is a forensic psychologist, and, along with her colleagues Lieutenant Joseph Corrigan and Detective Sergeant Watts, make up the UCU – Unsolved Crime Unit. They specialize in solving cold cases, and when the body of Michael Flynn, a 20 year old man who has been missing for a year, is found in a sarcophagus on the grounds of a church, they are called to investigate. Something Evil Comes is the fourth installment in the Kate Hanson series by A.J. Cross. The novel is set in Birmingham, in the UK, and Cross’ writing captures the ambience of England.

Flynn’s father is an influential businessman in the community and there is pressure to solve the case. As Kate and her team follow the leads, numerous suspects emerge, and readers will certainly have trouble guessing who-done-it.

The main characters are likeable and well-developed. Kate seems like a regular person, albeit a higher-than-average IQ, with a struggling teenage daughter whose IQ has gotten her taking college classes. The mother-daughter struggles are typical, and bring the novel to a relatable level. Both Kate and her daughter, Maisie, are both fairly unique characters and make for some interesting angles in this thriller. There are enough iffy characters to keep readers guessing about who is good and who is evil. The story flows and is easy to understand. Since the novel is quite short, it is also a fast read. However, it has enough suspense to keep readers reading till the end.

Although Something Evil Comes can be read as a standalone novel, most readers will also want to pick up the previous novels in the series which are also well written. Cross is a good author to follow, and those who like novels without a lot of graphic violence, sex, and language will appreciate her stories.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

Edge of your seat, bone-chilling, and enthralling, you won't be able to put this book down. You'll find yourself racing along with the Unsolved Crimes unit to try and solve the mystery. More than your average whodunit, you don't want to miss out!

When I started reading this, I thought from the first couple of pages that I was in for a treat, and it turned out to be true. I love forensic mysteries and this one will keep you on the edge of your seat while you search for answers to the many questions the novel raises.

Tray as I might, I didn't ever manage to guess exactly what was going on in this book until it was revealed at the end. I read so many mystery and suspense novels, that I am always impressed when the author manages to sneak one by me, and in this case, they certainly did. I didn't expect what happened in the end, but it thrilled me.

If you love books where you aren't sure who to trust and the culprit could be any number of the characters, this one will surely satisfy you. I liked the details of the murders and the clues that were left behind. Overall, this was an entertaining story with a lot of good content. Recommended to anyone who likes a good mystery that will leave you breathless.

An interesting procedural that adds a forensic psychologist to the usual mix as the lead character. This latest case to come to the Unsolved Crime Unit is a poser for Kate- why was a 20 year old murdered and why was he in a locked crypt? There are some twists and turns and some creepy things, especially after someone else (no spoilers) turns up dead. Kate is not an especially original character but she's likable; the same is true for Watt and Corrigan. I'd not read the first books in this series but this worked fine as a standalone. It's a quick read, not especially deep but intriguing enough. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

AJ Cross has written an engaging crime thriller with some colorful characters and interesting twists. Forensic criminologist Kate Hanson is called in to investigate a gruesome murder- a corpse with its throat torn out, found in a church crypt. As she questions the townsfolk and the clergy, she finds no easy answers- no clear motive for the killing. As she delves deeper, she suspects one of them is hiding something.

Ordinarily crime novels aren't my thing, but I liked how the case developed, and Cross paints a great atmosphere of horror and foreboding juxtaposed against a thriving church with a charismatic leader. The characters developed well, and there were some delicious scenes toward the end as things came to a head and backs were against the wall. I thought I had things figured out only to be surprised by some late developments. Recommended.

The body of a young man is found in an old crypt. No one from the church has a key. Thieves were the ones who discovered it. Dr. Kate is puzzled by the damage to his throat. Who killed him and how did they place him there?

Severn House and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It will be published December 1st.

The older detective thinks he was into drugs. Kate doesn't. But she finds he is a black sheep. He is from a moneyed family but he dances to a different drummer. There was some thought about him being gay, maybe sex was the cause of the murder. No matter what they guess, they aren't getting any further on the case. The chief is getting static from the mayor and they are under pressure to find the killer.

Add in a priest who doesn't always act like one and seems to enjoy is younger choir members more than he should, questionable behavior on the parent's part, and an old parishioner who commits suicide at his wife's nursing home (why would he do that?) right after having a nice chat with Kate. There's something more going on than they can see.

It comes down to a desperate stand off at the end and the killer was someone I was surprised to find was involved. I had a lot of suspects but the killer wasn't one of them. Let me know if you figure it out early!

Thank you Netgalley and Severn Publishing for the eARC.
This is the 4th in the Kate Hanson series and it's a good one. I hadn't read the previous 3 books, but it can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone.
The body of 20-year old Matthew Flynn is found in the crypt of St. Bartholomew's Church, his throat ripped out. He went missing the previous October, but his body has been surprisingly well preserved due to the low temperature.
Kate joins the police team of Watts and Corrigan in her capacity as forensic psychologist in what will prove to be a complicated and frustrating case. Soon the team is exhausted and don't seem to get any closer to the truth. Father Delaney of Bartholomew's, the Flynn family and Matthew's 2 roommates seem reluctant to answer any questions and may even be lying. Another body and a possible suicide throw up more questions than answers.
What is the motive? Matthew had an inverted cross tattoo on his neck, a strange thing for a supposedly nice, kind and slightly naive young man. Could it be drugs or money, sex or strange rituals?
At the end of the story the surprising answers to the many questions are very satisfying. I will now check out the 3 previous books; it's great to have another series to enjoy.

I enjoy the Dr Kate Hudson stories. The reoccurring characters are interesting and I like knowing the backstory of the people in their home life not just their work life. Interesting story that grabs you from the beginning with the scene in the church crypt. Lots of twists and turns to reveal the killer. Good read.

Thank you NetGalley for this book.

Looks like a little prayer, thanking NetGalley. And prayers, in a certain way, play a role in this book. It all revolves around a church, where a body is found in a crypt. Nothing wrong with that except for the fact it is the body of a young man who died recently.
Kate Hanson and her colleagues start with trying to find who the boy was and why he was left in the crypt, and along the way they encounter a number of family and friends of the young man, and a number of people who devoted their life to the church.

It was a pleasant read but I thought it a bit unbalanced. In the beginning of the book there is much talking and guessing without Kate and her colleagues going anywhere, in the middle the pace is nice and the last few chapters seem to be a bit hurried. I would have liked the story to be more evenly spaced out.

When Matthew Flynn is found in an old crypt with his throat pulled out, forensic psychologist Kate Hanson and the team of the Unsolved Murder Unit are called on to solve the crime. Matthew is the son of a local entrepreneur and the pressure is on to solve the murder quickly.

Who would kill such a lovely young man in such a gruesome way and what has the local church and community have to do with the crime? Witchcraft, drugs or just plain greed, all are options for Kate and the team to investigate.

This book is ok although it drags on for too long and then there is a sudden rush at the end, with a portion of the whole story not added to the end! Kate and the UM Unit are very weak and it’s all been written about before. A single mum with a teenage child struggling to cope with her job and her awkward child, Family jealousy, money, and a genial but strange priest.

This book could have been so much better if it had some original ideas because it is very well written and the characters are there to be expanded.

I look forward to reading more of the Kate Hanson series to see if the author grows along with the main characters.

I had trouble putting this book down. Great story line and personable characters. A malicious killer
is on the loose and a church is involved with the murders. Could not get this book out of my head
and will be reading A. J. Cross’s other books in this series. Highly recommend to mystery lovers.

Something Evil Comes opens rather quickly with the discovery of a body locked inside a church crypt. The victim is identified as 20-year-old Matthew Flynn, son of a prominent business man in town.

Forensic psychologist Kate Hanson and her team begin working to solve Matthew's murder when they are faced with yet another concern: a man is missing and there could be a connection between the two cases.

While the writing is very good, I wish there had been a little more of a distinction between the characters' personalities. I also felt the unravelling of the mystery at the end was good, yet I'm not totally sure there were enough clues in the story to make it fair for the reader. And it is very possible I just didn't pick up on them.
I don't think you will be sorry with this mystery. It will keep you guessing until the last page.

Although this is Book 4 of 4 in the Dr Kate Hanson Series, it works quite well as a stand alone.

Forensic Psychologist Kate Hanson along with Detectives Watt and Corrigan make up the Unsolved Crime Unit. They are called out to investigate the remains of a young man found locked inside a church crypt. Evidence shows that he has been there at least a year ... and it looks like his throat was ripped out prior to his death. He is quickly identified as Matthew Flynn, son of one of the city's leading residents.

She and her team have a difference of opinions when it comes to motive. Sex? Drugs? Money? Those are usually the leading reasons. But as they are questioning those who were close to Flynn ..ad some that weren't ..... they're getting much different opinions of who and what Matthew was.

And then another young man's remains are found ... someone who knew Matthew.

This is a solid crime thriller with engaging characters that will stand the test of time. Kate and her team are mostly no-nonsense and find it extremely satisfying when they can solve a cold case. There are several suspects, making it hard to guess until the final pages reveal a surprising twist.

Many thanks to the author / Severn House / Netgalley for the advance digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Forensic psychologist Kate Hanson is profiling a terrifying killer, a man who tore out his victim’s throat and left the body inside a church crypt. This is clearly not your garden variety killer. The murder reveals a killer who appears to be organized, but out of control at the same time. The victim, Michael Flynn had clearly been leading a secret life, but did that lead to his murder? Kate won’t have time to make a determination before another victim is taken. Can her expertise stop a killer before he strikes again? Cross does a fantastic job making Kate a relatable, realistic heroine, and she doesn’t spare the reader any of the graphic details of her murder scenes. A good solid thriller
