Dinosaurs and pirates? What’s not to love? Colorful illustrations and humorous text make this a picture book kids will reach for. You will love this fun story!
I love anything pirate so the thought of dinosaurs who are pirates sounds pretty fun. The illustrations are great too.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was too cute. Kids love pirates and kids love dinosaurs. This one combines the two. Cute illustrations and cute story.
I was expecting more from “A Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate.” I wasn’t a fan of the illustrations and the story wasn’t as funny as I was expecting it to be. Kids will probably enjoy the bathroom humor, but it wasn’t for me.
For kids who love pirates and/or dinosaurs, this book contains both! However, the combination doesn't work out so well -- the stegosaurus is not a very good pirate, through no real fault of his own. The illustrations are cute and the quiz at the back is a fun addition. My younger student would like this book.

While the idea is cute, I felt the story left me wanting something more. I did like the glossaries in the back for dino and pirate words as well as the additional fact page with a picture of what a real stegosaurus might have looked like. Nice, colorful illustrations.
Gary has just been fired from his job as a pirate, but he thought he did a pretty good job! He takes the reader through the tasks he was asked to do and we find out what went wrong with each situation.
Dinosaurs and pirates in one book. What's not to like? The plot isn't complex but it's fun and well supported by the illustrations. It might encourage a critical thinking discussion in the vein of other things that would make a dinosaur ill-suited to piracy.
This is a cute story and the pictures are wonderful. Any child that enjoys dinosaur books will enjoy this story. You will like the characters. If you enjoy pirate stories for the younger ones then you will like this book.
While I will likely purchase "Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate" (and the rest of the series) for my school library, I was slightly disappointed. When reviewing pictures books, I'm considering if it would make a good read-aloud (story or illustrations). I need at least one or the other (both is fantastic) to keep my audience interested. I may not have like it as much as another dinosaur series with dinosaur silliness, but I'm sure my students will.
The review questions and additional information at the end is a nice bonus.

In this book, the world of dinosaurs and pirates collide for a cute tale with even cuter illustrations.
Gary the stegosaurus wants to be a pirate, but it's a little difficult when the clothes don't fit and the ship nearly topples over because your body is too big, and your prickly tail shreds the sails.
Captain One-Tooth and the crew give Gary a chance, but we quickly find out that a stegosaurus just would not be a very good pirate! What career is he gonna try next? It'll make you laugh!
There's an interactive bit at the end of this book - a list of questions that you have to peruse back through the book to find the answers to - that spruces up the book a bit too, and makes it more fun for readers. I think this book would be great for kids around the age of 5-8.
Gary the Stegosaurus tried his best to be a pirate, but the clothes didn't fit, he couldn't eat the food, and he's just simply too big to have on a boat! The large and brightly colored illustrations were a delight - especially the details showing just how much he didn't fit in on the pirate ship. I sort of liked the questions at the end - I hadn't noticed any of the hidden answers initially, but I just wish they hadn't included the page numbers to look at as hunting through all of the pictures and then trying to match answers to the questions would have been a much better "treasure hunt" as it were. But overall it was cute and I think any small child into dinos and pirates would enjoy.
A fun book for dino and/or pirate enthusiasts! The story of a stegosaurus who wants to be a pirate, but encounters some difficulties along the way, is fun, silly, and peppered with facts making for a enjoyable read for young readers. I liked the inclusion of stegosaurus facts, a look-and-find in the artwork, a glossary (for dino's and pirates), and discussion questions; this enhanced the reading experience and makes this a good option for classroom use.
Gary the Stegosaurus tells us all about his quick adventure as a pirate. He wanted to be a good pirate, but things just didn't seem to work out. His clothes didn't fit, he accidentally shredded the sails, and he's literally too big for the ship!
This was a lot of fun. We quickly learn that something like being a pirate may seem like a lot of fun but it isn't for everyone. It's always a good idea to try, though!
I love that there are pages in the back of this picture book with interactive material such as discussion questions, a glossary for both dino and pirate words that some might not know, facts about stegosauruses, and more!
A very intriguing and funny book that not only cuddles the imagination but, engages the readers intellectual thinking, as well! I loved reading this book with my son and he enjoyed the games and questions in the end! Great job on this children's book and keep up the great work!
Gary the stegosaurus was just fired from this pirate job. But it was *not* his fault! From mis-sized clothes to almost sinking the boat from his weight, Gary has a tough go at being a pirate. Gary tries his best, but how was he supposed to know the poop deck isn't a bathroom?!
Kids who like dinosaurs or pirates will enjoy Gary's fairly amusing mishaps.
My almost 5 year old son thought this book was funny and wanted to read it again right after finishing it. That says something good about a children's book in my mind and is what made me give it an extra star. I thought it was a little bland, so that took some stars off for me. I'd say it's best for the preschool to kindergarten age group. Thank you to Capstone publishing for the ARC.
A Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate by Thomas Kingsley Troupe is a picturebook that is currently scheduled for release on February 1 2018. Everyone has dreams, even dinosaurs! But not every dream can become reality. For example, the brachiosaurus would love to be a spy! But at 40 feet tall, he certainly would not blend in. And the T-rex aspires to be a knight. But how would she manage to pick up a sword with those tiny arms?
A Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate is a picturebook that is good fun, with charming illustrations. I liked the dinosaur's attempts at being a good pirate, and how the tone gave the impression that he could laugh at himself while still being more than a little overconfident. I think the deliver of dinosaur facts along side the light hearted story make for a fun read that might get many re read requests. I also enjoyed the glossary and mini quiz at the end. The fact that the answers are hidden in the illustrations, and the quiz offers clues as to where young readers can find the answers, might spark a larger search for hidden information and encourage them to study pictures in other books to see if they can find information and clues.
I know we are not supposed to share but I had my two little critics read along with me. My sons and I really enjoyed this story! They thought it was hilarious and want me to but the finished copy when it is released.
The illustrations are very whimsical and do a great job correlating with the story. I did enjoy the questions at the end having to do a scavenger hunt back through the pages for the answers; which I had not noticed beforehand hiding in plain sight!
I felt the story was written in a way that both teaches and delights children to use the facts they learn from the story to imagine how a giant dinosaur would fit on a pirate ship. I would recommend this story to anyone with children or to grade school teachers as a tool build a love of reading!
I especially loved the poop deck scene!
I read this book with my 6 and 4 year old boys and they really enjoyed the story as they love dinosaurs and pirates! They thought the stegosaurus was a very funny character especially when he tried to hide on the deck and enjoyed looking for the clues in the pages!
This is a pretty cute picture book, providing a thorough explanation of the reasons that Stegosauruses (Stegosauri?) would not make good pirates. Some clever jokes, a nice glossary to explain the dinosaur and pirate vocabulary introduced throughout, and pretty cute art.
