A Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate by Thomas Kingsley Troupe is a picturebook that is currently scheduled for release on February 1 2018. Everyone has dreams, even dinosaurs! But not every dream can become reality. For example, the brachiosaurus would love to be a spy! But at 40 feet tall, he certainly would not blend in. And the T-rex aspires to be a knight. But how would she manage to pick up a sword with those tiny arms?

A Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate is a picturebook that is good fun, with charming illustrations. I liked the dinosaur's attempts at being a good pirate, and how the tone gave the impression that he could laugh at himself while still being more than a little overconfident. I think the deliver of dinosaur facts along side the light hearted story make for a fun read that might get many re read requests. I also enjoyed the glossary and mini quiz at the end. The fact that the answers are hidden in the illustrations, and the quiz offers clues as to where young readers can find the answers, might spark a larger search for hidden information and encourage them to study pictures in other books to see if they can find information and clues.

I know we are not supposed to share but I had my two little critics read along with me. My sons and I really enjoyed this story! They thought it was hilarious and want me to but the finished copy when it is released.

The illustrations are very whimsical and do a great job correlating with the story. I did enjoy the questions at the end having to do a scavenger hunt back through the pages for the answers; which I had not noticed beforehand hiding in plain sight!

I felt the story was written in a way that both teaches and delights children to use the facts they learn from the story to imagine how a giant dinosaur would fit on a pirate ship. I would recommend this story to anyone with children or to grade school teachers as a tool build a love of reading!

I especially loved the poop deck scene!

I read this book with my 6 and 4 year old boys and they really enjoyed the story as they love dinosaurs and pirates! They thought the stegosaurus was a very funny character especially when he tried to hide on the deck and enjoyed looking for the clues in the pages!

This is a pretty cute picture book, providing a thorough explanation of the reasons that Stegosauruses (Stegosauri?) would not make good pirates. Some clever jokes, a nice glossary to explain the dinosaur and pirate vocabulary introduced throughout, and pretty cute art.

I have not read this book since I was unable to open it. Therefore, I am unable to review this book. Based on the cover and title, I looked forward to reading this story with my son. I think it is something he would have enjoyed.

This story follows a stegosaurus, named Gary, who dreams of becoming a pirate. We follow his misadventures aboard a pirate ship. Overall, this was a mediocre book. I didn't necessarily hate anything about it but I also didn't really love anything about it either. I think kids will still probably like this just based on the fact that it has dinosaurs AND pirates.

I received an ARC Via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

I think kids will get a kick out of this book. What's not to love? Dinosaurs, pirates, plunder!
Somehow I imagined the dinosaur as a bad pirate, but he's more of a loveable and large misfit.
Still an attractive read for kids.

What a fun read! A funny story with great illustrations. I think little ones will really get a kick out of it. I like the question and answer element at the end.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A big thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. A cute picture book with hidden answers to some fun questions. I wonder if pirates could swim? Can stegosaurus?

3.5 stars

It's hard to review, because the book was obviously designed to work primarily with a double page spread whereas the ebook version had pictures that were split over pages, resulting in a lot of flipping back and forth to read the text and then go back to see what it was referring to, and some slow scrolling on the tablet for some of them.

The almost-5yo was excited to see the title, but didn't seem as engaged as I had expected. Some of that is most likely the experiential issues (above) which distracted from the book's contents. The hidden trivia was hard to find, but as this is recommended for readers aged 4-7 I think the older crowd would have more fun and success looking.

Overall, a fun read once, but I don't think it'll be asked for again.

This was an entertaining read combining two childhood favorites: dinosaurs and pirates. This was a fun book to read as it mixed science and history together to teach about dinosaurs and pirates. In this book, Gary the Stegosaurus explains why his job as a pirate didn't work out. As he did so, the reader learned a few facts about stegosauruses as well as about pirates.

The art work was fun and entertaining. It also contained hidden information that the reader could use to answer trivia questions listed at end of the book.

I have a five year old who loves anything to do with pirates or dinosaurs. This book hits both for a win.

My students loved this book. They thought it was “fantastic”, “awesome”, “outstanding”, and “hilarious”. I would definitely put this in my classroom library. It was easy to read with a funny plot. My students enjoyed listening and had lots of ideas why the stegosaurus should not be a pirate!

The idea of this book is wonderful, but the layout and the storyline of this book are terrible. It did not entertain my 4 year old at all, and that's what I base all my kids book reviews on. The writing was choppy, and it seemed like they were really trying to create another Dragons Love Tacos, but theres just no way.

Two of my favorite things growing up as a child? Pirates and dinosaurs! So imagine my delight when coming across this book. For me, the T-Rex is my all time favorite, but a Stegosauraus pirate is still pretty cool. This would be a nice gift for any child that loves either of those subjects (or both!). The pictures are colorful the dinosaur cute, and the situations silly. Poor stegosaurus tries to be like the other pirates, but he's too big, too heavy and just not built for piracy. Amusingly, he chooses a different profession at the end. After the story, the author includes a few informational pages on the dinosaur, so it isn't just fun and games. Kids will learn a bit about the stegosaurus, such as the purpose of the plates on his back. I received a free ebook in exchange for my honest review. And honestly, this would have been a book I would have picked up for my kids.

This is a cute title and often funny look at what life would be like on a pirate ship with a stegosaurus. There are so many reasons that make it a poor. The pictures that show the potential damage will surely make your little ones laugh.

Some of the highlights for me include the hidden trivia answers in the book's pages, the dinosaur facts in the back of the book, and the questions for further discussion. This title should appeal to young readers who want a laugh and should be loved even more by dinosaur lovers. This is a good title to add to a school library collection.

My students love dinosaur books. I think they would enjoy this book, as it mixes two of their favorite things; humorous stories and dinosaurs! I appreciate the questions at the end of the story and the dinosaur facts included.

Cute. But really random - in a where did you get this idea sort of way.

But it’s kinda fun. Unfortunately, the only thing I laughed out loud at was the bathroom humor. But that probably says more about me than the book.

I liked the trivia about stegosauruses at the end. But one thing that could be confusing is when the questions ask about “the stegosaurus” it could mean “the stegosaurus in the story” or “the stegosaurus in real life back in dinosaur times”.

Overall, it might be fun for your little dinosaur lover.

Stegosaurus has some issues being a pirate due to his massive size, inability to count, and he's an herbivore. This is a silly story with fun illustrations.

This was SUCH a fun book!
I requested this to read with my 6-year old who is dinosaur obsessed.
He'll be beyond happy to ask you what dinosaur it is that he's pointing at, and while you're sitting there with an "uhhhhh...." on the tip of your tongue, he's pleased to tell you some 50-character ridiculous dinosaur name that I wouldn't even want to attempt trying to sound out. He thoroughly enjoyed the book, and the illustrations add to the story fantastically. We will be picking up a physical copy!

Gary the Stegosaurus wants nothing more than to be a pirate. Unfortunately, his massive size is giving him some trouble when it comes to accomplishing that dream.

The illustrations are brightly colored and are accompanied by simple text. My three-year-old giggled her way through the entire thing and asked me to read it again immediately.
