A dog appears on the dining room table and the girl ponders shares reasons for why this may have occurred. The illustrations match the text. Children will enjoy this rhyming read aloud and the ending that could be the start of another book. As a teacher, the ending could launch a creative writing assignment for young writers.

I read this book hoping that it would be a good candidate for reading aloud to students during April (poetry month). Unfortunately the scenarios as to why the dog is on the table are just too far fetched for why the dog could actually be on the table that it just did not hold my interest which would mean it would not hold the students either.

A for effort and idea. The plot? Imaginative musings about what a suddenly-appearing dog on a dining room table might want to do. Where did it come from? What does it want. Some of the rhymes work better than others. (Other lines seem not to rhyme at all, making us wonder if the entire book is supposed to be in rhyme--or not). Some of the simple illustrations work better than others as well. Short and cute but we'll pass on this one.

Short and sweet! A very quick and simple read - the drawings are simplistic and the rhyming nature of the book is appealing for younger readers.

A nice book about a dog sitting on the dining room table and a girl who wonders how it came there and what it will do with some bright illustrations.

A cute little pigtailed redhead is shocked to see. . . well, the title spells it out. She has no idea how the dog got there, and wonders what to do with it: give it a meal, a bath, a poker game, a flamenco dance? The answer is much simpler than she could have imagined, if she’d just looked up earlier.
Cute story, with the rhymes executed perfectly. The artwork is pretty standard, but at least it’s humorous. The little girl’s expressions are particularly well drawn.

A little girl cannot understand for the life of her how a strange dog got into the house and is now in the middle of the dining room table for heaven's sake. Oh my... how did he get in? Did someone leave the door open? Did someone invite him in? What is she to do with him now?

This rhyming book is full of imagination casting as the little girl envisions different reasons what that canine may be up to.

The illustrations greatly enhance the story and there is a wonderful twist at the end to let the reader know exactly what that dog is doing on the dining room table.

Kids will smile at the ending and ask for the story one more time.

A cute very short book that is almost too quickly over. you will find yourself reading it more than once. I did accept an ebook version from Netgalley and believe I would enjoy it more as a board book. The illustrations are wonderful. The text has a nice rhythm and rhyme. The words are simple yet fun.

I didn't really get where this book was going and for a kids book I wouldn't really look at putting in a gambling image, but that's my own personal opinion - its ok as a rhyme book goes but can only give it 2 stars - not one I'd buy to keep for my daughter.

Nope. Not impressed enough to want to purchase. Illustrations are nice enough, but the story? No.

There's a Dog on the Dining Room Table by Elizabeth Maginnis. Illustrated by Annie Dwyer Internicola. A cutely illustrated rhyming story that will entertain your toddler, preschooler or kindergarten-aged child. An unexpected dog appears in the house of a young girl. Were the dog—and the new cat—adopted by the dad in the story, or was the dog just a stray being given a temporary abode? Simple pictures for young children who wonder if a dog can do human things. Thanks to NetGalley and Xist Publishing for providing this ebook for review.

This is a fun book. It is meant to be read aloud. It rhymes in a sing song pattern, and each time you get a peek at what the dog could possibly be doing. And it gets even funnier when the cat gets involved. A lovely story for storytime or bedtime.

I feel like this book left me feeling like a lot was unanswered.. seriously, who is this dog? and where did that cat come from? is the kid without a clue actually the one that doesn't belong in the house? its evident that the dog is on the table because the cat is the chandelier and its evident that i have quite honestly over analyzed this book for children... just clearly not for me.

This is a cute book about a dog that sits on the dining room table. A young girl sees him and tries to figure out what it is doing there or might do next at the table. The story is cute and the rhyming pattern will appeal to young beginning readers and toddlers. The text is big and clear which is a great help and the words flow smoothly. The pictures are bright and simple, perhaps a bit too simple which might not attract young children to this book. When reading it in a primary classroom, you could ask students to brainstorm, predict or problem solve to promote critical thinking. A nice addition to a primary class library.

A simple, rhyming story of a dog getting into a house and what he might do while he's there.

As rhyming books go, this is a cute enough book, although some of the things the little girls ponders about the dog would not even be known to her. Really? Wondering if the dog plays poker or whist? I don't even know how to play whist. I would have though of Go Fish or something else.

Still it is cute enough. And perhaps this is a way to teach kids about things you can do when you are at a table.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I have mixed feelings on this one. The story is cute and the rhyming pattern will appeal to young beginning readers and toddlers. However, for me the illustrations were underwhelming. The cover is indicative of what you'll find inside so if that style of illustration doesn't appeal to you, you may want to pass on this one.

I read this to my 3 year old daughter before bed and she loved it and wanted me to read it again straight after. This book is now part of our bed time reading list and have read it every night since as she loves it. The story follows a dog who is sitting on a dining table and the family are trying to work out why it is there.
