This is a lovely book about one of those things that don't seem important at the time, but turn into treasured memories. It will encourage kids to try cooking. It'll be fun to read aloud and encouraging the kids to make the noises as you read them. And it's a nice grandfather story that doesn't involve a quiet walk and fishing.

Colourful illustrations. Rhyming book about a child and his grandfather trying to spend time together by baking

A little boy has fun in the kitchen with his grandpa; they’re having a fantastic time, according to the drawings. Never realized there were so many things you could do with utensils and the ingredients themselves.
The best part is the rhymes, though some are forced. This is one of those books meant to be read out loud.
The artwork leans toward the magical, with seemingly every inch filled.
There’s a recipe at the end.

You not only enjoy looking at the terrific illustrations in this book you actually hear Pop Pop and his grandson cooking a lemon cake. Pish, peel, glop, twinkle! There are so many words little ones will love hearing and the grandparent/grandchild love between the two characters is adorable. Great book to read and to use making lemon cake with kids.

Another delightful book by Irene Smalls, this one is about a grandchild and his grandfather, as they bake lemon bars. There is even the recipe in the back of the book, so you can make the bars yourself.
I love how they show all the steps, including tasting the batter, and licking the bowl. (Although, I know, I know, we shouldn't eat raw dough.
The whole book is a dance of movement as the child and his grandfather go about the steps of making the lemon bars.
Fun all the way through. A delightful addition to any library.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

The idea behind this book is lovely; a grandson and his grandfather (or 'Pop Pop') spend time together baking a cake. It's lovely to see the close grandson/grandfather relationship and I'm sure other grandchildren will be able to relate. The best bit about this book is the absolutely beautiful illustrations. There is not a single bit of white space on the page, making this an artwork in itself! Not only that, but the font is really bold, nice and large, and sans serif, which I think works well with the illustrations. I loved the sound effects throughout which complement the story, such as 'glop, glop', the sound of the butter going into the pan, and 'sizzle, sizzle', frying in the pan. Finally, there is a recipe at the end of a book for a lemon cake bake, so if reading the book whets your appetite, you can get stuck in!

Such a beautiful story of a grandfather and grandson bonding through the love of baking.

Pop Pop and Me and a Recipe by Irene Smalls. Illustrated by Cathy Ann Johnson. Xist Publishing. A beautifully illustrated story about a child baking with his loving grandpa. Cozy, colorful art with endearing pictures of Pop Pop and his grandson, with the recipe in the back of the book. This is fun to read aloud, and makes a great family book. Another wonderful children’s book from Xist Publishing. Highly recommended! Thanks to NetGalley and Xist Publishing for providing this ebook for review.

This is a cute book about a young boy that is cooking with his Pop Pop (Grandad) and the associated noises that the items in the kitchen and the ingredients make - fun for toddlers and younger children - there is also a recipe at the end for adults!

Great family story. Read with kids they'll love it. Wonderful illistrations! Great relationship to write about the grandpa and grandson. Would recommend.

Super fun read! Our story time kids will love this book!
The illustrations have a touch of whimsy, and the narration style is lots of fun. The story is told through lots of phrases that emphasize fun sounds and rhymes (e.g. "bake, bake my favorite cake; sniff, sniff the lemon whiff"), in addition to giving a complete view of the cooking experience (beginning with clean hands, including spills, and ending with clean dishes and a yummy cake).
This is a great choice, whether you are looking for a good book for a 30 Million Words or Babies Need Words program, for diverse books, for books celebrating family, for books celebrating activities (cooking), for rhyming stories, or just a fun read.

This was cute! Child and grandfather bake a cake together! Nice story for during a grandparent visit. Lovely, exuberant illustrations! Lots of onomatopoeia for kids to enjoy!

Adorable. This book screams to be read aloud. The sounds and the cadence are right on as Pop Pop and grandson make a cake. It includes a recipe in the back, but it stands at top with the story and illustrations.

We loved this book! The illustrations are beautifully done, and the child's happiness at spending the day cooking with Pop Pop can be felt as the story unfolds. This title uses onomatopoeia effortlessly. The short three letter words will be easily recognizable to early readers and lend themselves toward a phonetic reading approach. I would highly recommend this title.

This is almost a companion to the book Nana and Me by the same author, although I did not like this one as much. The young boy and his Pop Pop bake a cake together. The story is told in a rhyming fashion using sounds that could be fun to imitate together. A recipe for the lemon cake they make is at the back of the book.
The story is told in simple language for young children to understand. The watercolour illustrations add warmth to the story. The expressions on the faces of both Pop Pop and his grandson are priceless, they are so real. The emotions expressed are easy to see and relate to. What a wonderful story to use to prepare for a visit with grandparent or as a reminder of what great times children can have or have had with their grandparents. A nice addition to a family library.

This is a great story of a boy and his grandfather baking together. It's perfect for reading as a teacher with a young class, or as a parent (or grandparent) reading to their child.
