I was unable to concentrate on the novel due to problems with the layout.

"The Fire in the Rock" is a retelling of the Exodus which gives realistic and rational explanations of the miracles described in the original bible story without denying the existence of the divine. Even though I am not religious, I quite enjoyed this novel because it painted a really interesting picture of what life was like at the time when the Exodus might have happened and how people perceived the world. Telling the story from the point of view of Moses’ wife was a good choice because it gave a voice to a character that normally is not very prominent in the traditional telling of the story and allowed for an exploration of a man who has become larger than life in most religions.

While I mostly enjoyed the novel and thought that it did a good job of interweaving religious beliefs with a fictional retelling of one of the most popular bible myths, I did not really like the black-or-white-worldview of the characters (but it seems rather common in novels inspired by the bible). If a character was evil, he was evil without having any redeeming features. If a character was good, he may have doubts about God but he never really did any wrong. I think that the novel could have been improved on by giving the characters more nuance, but the novel is definitely still a great read because of the great writing and the epic scope of the story.

The description and everything seems interesting and while I do know that this is an e-copy, I like to read books that are properly formatted. The double spacing between lines and the title appearing in between lines is not something I'm thrilled about, so it was nearly impossible for me to read the book.
