Theo has called in Dr. Kate Hayden to help with a woman's murder. The murder matches a serial killer Kate has put in jail. As the story moves on not only do we have what may be a copy cat killer but we now have a serial killer that Kate was chasing before being called in to help Theo. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I love Ms. Burtons books.
I was given an ARC for an honest review thank you.

4.5 Excellent read. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes, mystery, murder, mayhem and monsters (not paranormal) in the world. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down, i went along for the ride! I had to keep applying the brakes to take a breath. Grab the book, come met Detective Mazur and FBI agent Kate Hayden travel to Texas , lock your car doors and enjoy! I will definitely be more aware of my space!

Thank you Netgalley and Mary Burton for the opportunity to read and provide my honest review.

BOOK BLURB

In this gripping stand-alone from bestselling author Mary Burton, an FBI agent must catch a copycat killer. The only difference this time: she’s the final victim.

Catching monsters helps FBI agent Kate Hayden keep her nightmares at bay. Now an urgent call brings her back to San Antonio, the scene of her violent past. A brutal new murder shows hallmarks of a serial killer nicknamed the Samaritan. Tricky part is, Kate already caught him.

Either Kate made a deadly error, or she’s got a copycat on her hands. Paired with homicide detective Theo Mazur, she quickly realizes this murder is more twisted than it first appeared. Then a second body is found, the mode of death identical to a different case that Kate thought she’d put behind her.

Now Kate and Detective Mazur aren’t just working a homicide; the investigative pair is facing a formidable enemy who knows Kate intimately. While Mazur is personally trying to protect Kate, the closer they are drawn to the killer, the clearer it becomes that in this terrifying game, there is only one rule: don’t believe everything you see…

My Thoughts

It has been quite a while since read anything penned by author [author:Mary Burton|15020], had almost forgotten how much enjoyed her suspense thrillers with characters have no trouble liking and plots that keep me on my toes until the last page is read.

Especially enjoy this one because a lot of the action takes place in Texas setting of San Antonio which is only a couple of hours from where I live and there are quite a few other familiar to me places mentioned as well.

Agent for the FBI Dr. Kate Hayden stared evil in the eye 17 years ago and survived, now years later she feels better equipped to deal with the man who changed her world forever when he took away not only her innocence but her father.

Detective Theo Mazur transferred from Chicago to San Antonio to be near his teen-aged daughter when his ex-wife got a promotion that caused her to relocate from Chicago six months ago, whereupon he quit his own job and followed them.

When the two are paired together to find and stop an apparent serial killer Kate and Theo are taxed to stop the diabolical plot before she loses her life as the killers final victim.

With some twists and turns that take readers into a world where death is not the most horrific outcome after all, it is instead the mental and physical torture that comes before hand.

Thankful this really was a stand-alone with beginning, middle and ending that covered all the bases to tie up the story completely.

I LOVE Mary Burton!!!! She never let's us readers down.

Kate and Theo are an awesome team. All of the characters and secondary characters are interwoven perfectly.

If you love thrillers with the FBI and cops hot on the trail of murderers, than your in for an awesome adventure. There is murder, revenge, cunning, planning, unexpected twists and turns and just when you think you've got it figured out....BAM, your in for a surprise.

If your all about hot dirty sex than move on, but if your in it for a great story with great characters, and just the right amount of romance than grab this book.

This is a standalone book, so grab it, get your drink and snack, and sit back and get ready for heart pounding, unputdownable, page turning, thriller.

I truly hope these characters turn up again in more Mary Burton books.

A fast paced suspense with lots of twists and turns in this latest thriller from Mary Burton. FBI agent Kate Hayden finds herself playing a deadly game of chess with a killer who fractured her life and family 17 years ago. Each murder he carries out is intentional and strategic, and he never waste a move. When he teams up with another serial killer who has a beef with Kate the game turns even more deadly. With a great cast of characters and twisted killers this page turner never disappoints.

Loved this!!!! I received an advanced copy of this in the reviewers circle and I'm very grateful I enjoyed this very much!
The story is based around FBI Agent Kate Hayden, who is called to a murder which looks to be a copycat of serial killer she has already put behind bars.... or is it? I really liked Kate's character she is cool, and different to other female characters and her partnership with Detective Mazur is brilliant! Two peas in a pod, if you like. Similar in the way neither fit in but also different. Fast paced and plenty of twists which is just the way I like books to be, this story kept me gripped right until the end. I always enjoy Mary's books and this one hasn't disappointed. Wish I could give Kate a ring to see what she's up to now!

Mary Burton excels at weaving stories and this one is no different. It keeps you on your toes, and engaged to the very end. A definite "must read" for those that love suspense, unpredictable twists and turns, and a little romance.

Another excellent book by Mary Burton. Great suspense. An FBI profiler searches for two serial killers, one of whom shot and killed her father 17 years before. Another great page turner that totally captures the reader's interest. Thanks to NetGalley and Mary Burton for the privilege to read and review this book.

Really liked the book. There were no lulls in the story and the plot twist was ingenious. If you like Prey novels, you will like The Last Move.

Full review to be published online in late September.

THE LAST MOVE is yet another serial killer, and yet another female FBI agent who has a tragic past for the serial killer to feed into and torment. The big question is whether the serial killer is the Samaritan; or a copycat murderer come to haunt Kate Hayden. Then there is the obligatory romance with the local detective, and the ‘this is what I did and why I did it scene in the book’.

Mary Burton is a very good Romantic Suspense writer, and always keeps the reader on their toes. Unfortunately, the serial killer trope and the formulaic outline of her novels it getting a bit tired. Are there really that many serial killers in the world, and why is it that all the FBI agents have a tragic past for the killer to feed into? I would think that some of these people would never make it into the FBI with all their past issues. Mary Burton, it’s time to shake the formula up.

This story was an exciting romantic suspense title with two intriguing main characters. Kate Hayden is an FBI agent who is a profiler and a specialist in linguistics. When the story begins, she is trying to track down a man who puts young women in boxes and rapes them repeatedly until he gets tired of them. Kate rescues his latest victim Sara and promises to find the man. However, she is called back to San Antonio because there has been a crime committed that is eerily similar to a string of murders that Kate thought were solved. She isn't eager to go back to San Antonio. She left when she graduated from high school to get away from a family that had fallen apart after Kate's father was murdered and Kate was almost killed by her former boyfriend.

Detective Theo Mazur has caught the new crime and is eager to get Kate's input. Mazur has recently joined the San Antonio police force. His ex-wife moved there with their 14-year-old daughter to pursue her career. After losing his son to crib death and watching his marriage fall apart because of it, he wasn't going to give up any time with his daughter. He's still getting used to a new city and new job but he brought with him years of experience as a homicide detective in Chicago.

Mazur and Kate investigate first believing that the murder was a copycat killing. When there is a second killing which mimics another of Kate's closed cases, Kate begins to think that her old boyfriend, now out of prison, is going after her for revenge. Between the guy who likes to kidnap girls and keep them in wooden boxes and the ex-boyfriend with a major case of crazy, Kate and Mazur have their hand full. They need to find both of them before more people are killed.

This was an engaging mystery with really creepy villains. I liked Kate's single mindedness and her total focus on her job. I liked Mazur's devotion to his daughter and I also liked that he saw Kate's quirkiness and found it attractive. This is advertised as a stand alone mystery but I would be eager to find out what happens next for Kate and Mazur.
