Alex was an officer and a Navy SEAL. He was given an honorable discharge when a grenade thrown into the back of the truck he was driving injured him and two of the men in the truck. And killing a third man. Alex was supposed to keep this kind of thing from happening. He’s large and in charge. He went through physical therapy and saw a shrink, as he was ordered to. And then he went home to Montana. While he was gone his father had remarried and then died, leaving half of his ranch to the daughter of his new wife, Becca. Ten years makes for a lot of changes, a lot of regrets, but Alex can fix everything. He can open the ranch to other veterans who are scarred by war. He brings the other two men who were injured in the grenade incident with him and together they begin building their therapy ranch.
Becca’s mother has been suffering from the grief of losing her husband, Alex’s father. Becca has finally convinced her mother that she will be fine running the ranch alone and convinces her mother to move to town. When Alex, Gabe, and Jack arrive back at the ranch they begin the work on their therapy ranch, hoping to open it to other veterans to work and recover there. Becca falls in love with Alex and he…well, he won’t admit to anyone, including himself, that he has fallen in love with Becca until he stops having nightmares and is able to “fix” himself.
This is the story of Alex having to let go of the control he’s always clung to, as a Navy officier, as a man, and as a human being. He’s nothing without a mission and people to protect. Nothing. He just needs more time to fix himself. But Alex is wasting away as he waits for this magical healing. He’s pushing away everyone who loves him. Can Becca get Alex to let her in so he can realize he needs help so he can help others?
This is a heartbreaking story of a man who thinks he has to be so in control that he shuts everyone and everything out. You will love Becca for her patience and you will love Alex for his desire to take care of those he loves, especially when he has to let go and let Becca take care of him. A wonderful romance. I’m eager for the next stories in the Navy SEAL Cowboys series.

Alex is a very manly man and doesn't appreciate when it comes into question, “I’m not drinking something called ‘sleepy time,’ Becca. I’m a grown man.” Alex doesn't understand his woman at times, “You want to have *** in the freezing cold? Here? Now? In the back of a truck?” God help him, she probably did." I liked this book, I liked that Becca was the balance Alex needed.
