The Cholesterol Puzzle by Jill D. Davey and Sergey Dzugan MD PHD from Matador Publishing is very informative and makes you think about how our bodies actually work. This book is a wealth of information on today's cholesterol crisis and the dangers of the statin drugs used to prevent heart disease believed to be caused by cholesterol. Cholesterol isn't really a problem since the body needs cholesterol and statins are more harmful than a raised cholesterol level. Aging and our hormone levels affect cholesterol levels What's high for one person may not be for another. With the use of bio identical restorative hormone therapy the body can be guided to optimal health. No easy answers in the book but valuable information and a solution for preventing heart disease with Dr Dzugan's therapy.
Thank you Jill D. Davey, Sergey Dzugan MD PHD, Matador Publishing and Netgalley, for the complimentary copy.

This book is a valuable addition to making decisions about health, especially where cholesterol-lowering drugs are being considered. It is somewhat technical, but that is to be expected with such a complex topic. It carefully lays out many reasons why cholesterol is critical to maintaining hormones and health, and why cholesterol-lowering medications may be a truly bad idea. Since many doctors are too rushed to do much more than prescribe pills based upon test numbers, educating oneself is a necessity in order to be an informed consumer of medicine. I will be asking my parents' and in-law's doctors many questions!

Great book to read about the leading cause of all diseases - cholestrol.

This is not an easy book so it is difficult to me to criticize or approve what is written inside, but it was still interesting to consider the cholesterol from a new point of view, and the statine also!

Questo non é un libro facile quindi non me la sento di criticare o approvare quanto c'é scritto, ma comunque é stata una lettura interessante anche perché mi ha fornito un nuovo punto di vista sia sul colesterolo che sulle statine.

THANKS TO NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!

The Cholesterol Puzzle by Jill D. Davey is a book about the importance of cholesterol in the human body.
If you have high cholesterol levels by medical standards, your doctor will probably prescribe cholesterol lowering medications like statins to prevent heart attacks. In this book Jill D. Davey states that excessive cholesterol is not the primary cause of heart attacks and gives a detailed explanation of the importance of cholesterol in the human body. She presents Dr. Dzugans findings about the counterproductive effects that cholesterol lowering statins have on our health. It is not necessarily in our best interest to lower cholesterol with statins for a number of reasons. For example cholesterol is an important building block of hormones that keep our bodies running smoothly. It is also important for the regeneration of the nervous system. I learned that cholesterol levels change as we age and healthy levels vary widely from person to person.
At the end of the book Jill D. Davey presents Dr. Dzugan's bioidentical hormone restorative therapy for optimal health and longevity, as practiced in his clinic. This therapy is highly individualized, depending on blood tests and personal health history. Although I have learned a lot about the role cholesterol in the human body, I was expecting to read more about Dr. Dzugan's bioidentical hormone therapy. You actually have to become his patient to find out. Also, there is no mention about general steps that can be taken at home to achieve better cholesterol levels, like making targeted food choices or taking certain supplements. This I why I give this book 4 stars.

There was a lot of good, scientifically-based information in this book. About halfway through, it took a different turn and felt like a huge infomercial for a while, but then it came back around to the original theme of the book. Having a strong biology background, I didn't have any trouble following this book, but it was very technical, and I could see laymen struggling to follow along with the text. Good thoughts; good ideas; applicable to all ages; just needs to be toned down a bit and put into simpler terms for the general public to take advantage of the knowledge.
