I love using my slow-cooker and am therefore always looking for new recipes to try out, but most slow-cooker cookbooks repeat the same relatively small set of dishes. There's only so many pot roast or barbeque chicken recipes that any one person needs.

But Slow Cooker Modern is here to the rescue! It has a diverse range of new recipes! It even has a whole chapter of vegetarian recipes! I am so happy. I get that slow-cooking lends itself to breaking down tough cuts of meat, but it's great to have a cookbook with vegetarian recipes beyond the standard chili. Here we have: eggplant tian (a ratatouille type dish), hearty sweet potato and chickpea stew with sweet spices, smoky collards and black-eyed peas, three variations of dal (though one has quinoa in it which, come on, at that point it's not dal), and creamy giant limas with sun-dried tomatoes, to name just a few.

And then, of course, there's all the other chapters. A brief selection of some of the recipes I'm most excited to try: chicken saag, whole grain congee with crisp panko chicken, romanian-style chicken and noodles, feta moussaka, Scotch broth (a lamb and barley stew), and braised pork belly sandwiches. There are also recipes for accompaniments to the main dishes, everything from corn muffins to collard slaw.

I like the layout of the book too. Krissoff is writing for people who spend most of the day out of the house at work, so each recipe takes 8 hours in the slow-cooker. She divides each recipe into steps for "morning" and "evening", and is clearly working to make each one as simple as possible while still delivering big flavor. As a lazy, lazy cook, I approve.

Slow Cook Modern: 200 Recipes for the Way We Eat Today is definitely a modern take on cooking and using a slow cooker, with recipes such as Tarragon and Crème Fraîche Chicken with Cranberry-Orange Wild Rice. I felt like this cook book is a great edition to anyone's library, but the recipes aren't accessible to a wide range of people when it comes into cost to prepare the meals and the weekly budget a lot of people have to feel an individual or family. There are hearty dishes that you'd expect when it comes to using a slow cooker, but also classic dishes with a modern take. Some recipes are more unique with a little more complexity to challenge a beginner in the kitchen.

When I think "slow cooker" (or "Crock Pot"), what comes to mind is hearty root-vegetable stews or savory roasts that warm you from the inside on cold winter nights. Slow Cook Modern has quite a few classic and moderned-up recipes for those traditional dishes - but it has WAY more, too. Think cuisines from all corners of the Earth: India, Scotland, Central and South America, Eastern Europe, Indonesia - and even the American south. There's an extensive section on vegetarian and vegan recipes, as well as instructions on how to "slow-cook" the base ingredients needed for a lot of the dishes (stocks, pastes, ghee, etc.). Add in the clear, helpful morning/evening instructions and interesting side-dish/accompaniment recipes, and this book is a must-have for busy home cooks.

I love the layout and design of this book! I love the structure of the recipes and the thought that has gone into the process. I can't wait to try some.

This book is the best organized I've seen on slow cooking. That's because it takes into account the way people actually use these appliances and how they want to cook.

Every recipe assumes that you want to load the slow cooker in the morning before work, turn it on and have minimal work to do once you are home to fix dinner. To achieve that Krissoff has an accompaniment to each recipe to make a full meal. She also breaks down each pair into what is done before and after work.

It's an approach that is thoughtful and helpful

Also in the book you'll find ideas for leftovers, suggestions for other accompaniments, and tips..

My problem with the book is that it is for "the way we cook now. That means there is a chapter of vegetarian and vegan recipes. It also means that ethnic dishes make up the majority of recipes. While I didn't find too many exotic ingredients used, this emphasis may be a difficult one for many.

I guess I am way out of step because I found the recipes relied far too much on chili peppers and hot spices. o while a great concept, it's not a cookbook for me.
