Many thanks to Net Galley and Delacorte Press for the digital arc of this novel.

I wanted to give this book three stars because of some problems I had with it. I ultimately gave it four stars because reading it from cover to cover in less than twenty-four hours (half one day, half the next) has to count for something. Plus I enjoyed the book as a whole. This is classic Lee Child which makes it classic Jack Reacher by extension. People who think Jack Reacher doesn't have a sensitive side to his nature simply have to be substituting soppy or sappy for sensitive. Of course Reacher is sensitive, otherwise he wouldn't go off on these quests to find the reason for some situation others just walk right on by. In this case a stroll down the street while his bus is sitting in the depot of Rapid City, South Dakota leads him to find and buy the ring of a woman who graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2005. Her initials are engraved inside so, with no other reason in sight, Reacher decides she might have fallen on hard times and he wants to return the ring. So where does he go from there? Well, for on thing he tells the bus driver he won't be getting back on the bus. The remainder of the book is classic Reacher pulling multiple rabbits out of the hat.

So here are my reasons for my quandary about the three or four star rating. How can people live completely off the grid for years with absolutely no source of income? Because that's what happened here and it just didn't make sense. I think the details were not included because if they had been then the story could not have unfolded in the way it did. But I'm curious, I notice little details so I wanted to know because that wasn't a small detail, that was a big deal. Next, Reacher is a large man (6'5 and 250 pounds) but he's not a monster. Why did the author have people call him names synonymous with urban legends? That was odd and it stood out, but not in a good way. Finally, that last chapter is a mess. As far as I can tell not one plot thread is tied up. There is an awful lot I, as a reader, am left to assume about pivotal characters in this novel. Why? So the page count (400 pages) could include that last interaction? Well, I'm sorry but it just seemed like pity to me and that didn't fit with the character of the Jack Reacher person I've come to know.

I gave the book four stars. I've given my argument for both the three and the four. Now you get to decide what you think.

Another terrific Jack Reacher novel. This time the reader sees a little different Reacher, one who is lonely after breaking up with Michele Chang. This loneliness is seen in his choice of travel routes. In his search for the owner of a West Point class ring, Reacher allows the reader to witness both the mental and physical hardships and challenges of a few severely wounded Purple Heart recipients and their struggle to obtain a variety of cannabis medicines that are necessary for their survival. The legal and illegal methods of access to those meds were investigated by Reacher and his cohorts. Not an easy task for when one door closes another one opens.

Let me start by saying,I've been a HUGE fan of Lee Child and Jack Reacher since I read the first book in the series years ago. After the first five or six books I began to worry that Mr Child would begin to lose momentum and the books might become inconsistent, as .usually happens with a long running character series.
I am so glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised that here we are on book twenty one in the series, and Reacher is just as good today as he was in the first book!
Reacher is a force of nature , and that nature is justice. This time he"s 'looking for the owner of a West Point graduation ring he finds in a pawn shop.
I don't want to give away anything so let me just say that if you are a Jack Reacher fan this is one of the best yet! Please keep them coming Mr Child!!!

Reacher is the quintessential accidental detective and anti-hero. As he ages he no longer can rely on brute strength and reflexive blows in a calculated and devastating manner. In "Midnight Line" Reacher relies more on his ability to asses a situation and talk the bad guy into giving him what information he needs.. As always, Reacher bends the rules to get the bad guy and help save the day for the damsel in distress. Child continues his detailed and evocative story telling that sees detail where the reader does not. Do not plan any activities once this book is in your hands.

This is classic Reacher. You know the formula: Reacher stumbles upon a problem, picks up some allies, and takes care of some bad guys. Without spilling any hints, I will say that I found the storyline very compelling and relevant. An excellent addition to the series.

What can I say. I love Jack Reacher stories. This one is so good. It was so revelant with the drug problems of today. It was a fast read for me and I couldn't put it down. Our patrons at our library will love it!

Let me say that I just love Reacher. When he finds a West Point Class ring in the window of a pawn shop, he just has to find the rightful owner to find who the ring belongs to. Of course, nothing is as simple as it seems when it comes to Reacher's life. A total page turner. Highly recommend.

Another Awesome Jack Reacher book! I love the well written fast paced storyline. Reacher finds trouble that he is determined to right. A pleasure to read and always fun to read how Reacher thinks and takes action.

This is the best Jack Reacher book by far, might have something to do with the fact I live by Rapid City, SD. The story gets you hooked immediately, once again Lee Child talks about and makes a great story out issues that are a huge concern at this moment. I totally got into this story and stayed in it while I went on with day to day life. Love this book and I highly recommend it, especially to someone who wants to read something different and exciting!!

This is a good read involving our favorite nosy nomad. Reacher gets curious about the owner of something he saw in a pawn shop, and he is off and running to the Midwest and mountainous west. He is not alone this time, as he teams up with a retired FBI agent and a few others. Having other people to bounce ideas and observations off of added an interesting element to the discourse. The story itself shined a light on a problem much of America is either unaware of or choosing to ignore. All in all, the book was a very enjoyable read.

For the first time, Lee Child has given a glimpse into Jack Reacher's heart. Oh, don't worry, he hasn't gone all sappy on us! The Midnight Line tells a fast-paced story and keeps us on the edge of our seat, cheering him on as he mows down the bad guys in Reacher's inimitable style. But this story comes just after his time with Michele Chang has ended, and for the first time we see that Jack's not okay with an abrupt ending and a new, directionless beginning. For the first time, we see a hint that he is not always as strong on the inside as he looks on the outside.

Lee Child is a great master at telling powerful stories in simple declarative sentences. This is Reacher #22. I may have to go back and read all of them again, because after a Lee Child novel, most of the others seem kind of flat.

I must admit to being a Jack Reacher junkie, I wait breathlessly for our yearly tryst. This did not disappoint. Not only is Reacher back, but in a very topical situation which entertains as it educates the reader about the current opiod crisis.

I urge all my students, future teachers and parents to read this and see how the trade in these dangerous drugs is carried out across the country.

This is an opportunity to meet a softer Jack Reacher. The spotting of a delicate West Point class ring sends him on a hunt for it's owner. He is Galahad to the disfigured former army vet. His kindness to her and her family is a window into his restless soul. He rescues her, breaks up the viscous opioid ring and keeps the reader rapt.

In a curious way, I loved this new, nicer Reacher. His sensitivity and ability to understand the fragile, damaged soldier really helped me gain insights into the soul of one of my favorite and most exciting characters in literature.

I am so thrilled to have received this ARC. The Jack Reacher series is one of my favorites and I anxiously await each fall's new release and then read it in one day. This one was no exception! I really enjoyed the story and the characters. This felt a little different than a typical Reacher book, a little softer maybe, but at the same time there was still classic Reacher in there.

Reacher destroys the drug trade, saves a wounded vet, and moves on...I love this series...I love Jack Reacher. Lee Child rocks

Great book! Lee Child did not disappoint with this new installment in the Jack Reacher series. It was hard to put this book down and I would definitely recommend it!

Lee Child has written another "can't put it down" thriller. Jack Reacher finds a West Point class ring in a pawn shop and goes on a quest to find the owner. In typical Jack Reacher style, he encounters troubles wherever he turns. Child is able to carry the reader along through nail biting dread with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.

I'm a long time fan of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. They never fail to draw me into the story and the situation. This one starts with Reacher's feeling of duty toward another veteran and careens into situations I would never have expected. There's always a bit of "the end justifies the means" in the Reacher novels and this one is no exception. It's a bit gritty in sections but the book would not be as compelling if those scenes weren't there. I won't reveal details but this one takes you in and out, thankfully, of a twisted subculture that Child helped me to understand more fully. If you're already a Reacher fan, you'll appreciate The Midnight Line. If you're new to the series, it might be a good one to start with.
