I'm a fan of Lukavics's Daughters Unto Devils, so I was poised to like this novel as well, but the execution of the gruesome premise falls short. While there are surprising touches of "zombie thriller + The Virgin Suicides" throughout (The Virgin Suicides is even mentioned in the book), there's not enough at the heart of the story to keep the reader enthralled. In some ways, there is too much of what I will call emotional exposition, with at least 3-4 paragraphs of reflection for each line of dialogue or minor event. This keeps the story from being as tightly paced as Daughters Unto Devils. In other ways, there's a lot missing from this book., and the characters' motivations and actions are not believable.
