Ty, husband of Betsy and is a keen & happy farmer, they are totally in love with each other and have tried unsuccessfully to start a family of their own. Jenna, Betsy’s younger sister (the wild one) has two children but craves a different lifestyle from waitressing and an opportunity arrives to pursue her photography dreams.
Jenna leaves her children with Betsy and Ty for two weeks which then gets extended. Not realising how hard it will be for her sister.Betsy gets wrapped up in motherhood something she thought she could never have and this causes difficulties between her & Ty
This is a story of family relationships and discovering how important they are to each other.
A real enjoyable read which takes you on a journey of self discovery. It shows you that communication is the key to everything.
I am reviewing this book for #netgalley.

This is SUCH a brilliant book, and on so many levels. I have to preface my review with this: the last time I read a 400 page book in ONE day was.... never! But right from page one, I was drawn in and in and in to the story of these two sisters who on the surface are so different, but under the surface they hold a loving history and bond. The first level of this book is beautifully written- believable characters whom I cared about from the beginning and whose needs and desires on so many levels kept me swiping page after page on my iPad screen. Not only believable characters, but a finely tuned plot that keeps us wondering until the end who is going to make their dreams come true and who is not going to be able to, and what they will do when they can't.

On a whole other, deeper level, this book made me think about so many things: the storms we all weather and how we do so, the dreams that we plant that may never come to fruition and how we deal with that, the art of photography and seeing beneath what everyone else sees, and also the tender yet infinitely strong bond of a loving marriage and how that is weathered through the years.

I was able to read a digital version of this book for free from NetGalley, and am grateful to the publisher and the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyable quick read about sisters, their relationship, what children can do to a marriage, and a little bit of Southern comfort.

The cover art captured my attention...but the story captured by heart. Loved it. So will you. Five stars.

The pace of this book ended up being a little slower than I expected, and I also expected more turmoil or tension related to the actual hurricane season. Instead, it was a nice story about family relationships, finding one's way through life, and dealing with life plans that may not come to be.

HURRICANE SEASON by Lauren K. Denton is a beautiful story of love, family relationships and life dreams. As with her debut novel, THE HIDEAWAY, the author has created characters that are believable and relatable and that draw you deep into their stories. Betsy and Ty run a successful dairy farm in Southern Alabama. As a couple, they are struggling with some heart-breaking circumstances that are testing the strength of their marriage and plans for the future. Betsy and her sister, Jenna, were best friends growing up, but drifted apart over the years as the demands of their jobs and family went in vastly different directions. Jenna is a single mother of two little girls and while she loves them deeply, she feels she has had to give up all her hopes and aspirations to be a mother to them. The chapters in the book alternate between the perspectives of Betsy, Ty and Jenna. The reader is taken on their journeys of self-discovery, acceptance of the present and hope for the future. The vivid descriptions of the scenery and the hot Southern summer days and nights are the perfect backdrop for the moods and themes of the book. Being a current resident of Birmingham, I thoroughly enjoyed the many references to places I know well in the area, but also the depictions of Betsy and Ty’s rural farm life. The book is well-written and has a smooth and easy flow to it. HURRICANE SEASON is a poignant and charming story of the love between sisters, spouses, parents and children that kept me engaged from beginning to end. I am thankful to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of the book.

What a wonderful story of two sisters, each dealing with different issues. Betsy would love to have children, but is struggling with infertility. Her husband is supportive and loving, but wants them to move forward as a couple if pregnancy does not happen. Jenna is a single mom with 2 small children, and we are led to wonder if she truly wants her daughters, or does she want to follow her dream of being a photographer. Set against the background of an approaching, severe storm, both realize exactly what it is they truly desire.

I enjoyed learning more about Betsy and Jenna’s relationship and Ty and Betsy’s struggles as well. It built up as the storm did and the characters learned a lot about each other and themselves as the novel progressed. Really enjoyable read- just like The Hideaway was. Denton has a delicate way of presenting her characters and enabling you to fall in love with them.

I received a copy of this story from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was drawn in first, as one so often is, by the cover. It's so pretty and warm and welcoming!

In the beginning, I was a bit reluctant. I don't know anything about dairy farming or being a mom (or a single mom) or having a good relationship with a sibling. I kept thinking, "How am I going to relate to this? How am I going to enjoy it?"

But enjoy it I did.

The chapters are told from three different points of view: Betsy, her sister Jenna, and Betsy's husband Ty. It was a lovely choice because it allowed me to see how each character thought about a situation while still holding back some secrets. And the trials and tribulations they go through are entirely relatable. The more I read, the more I felt like I was sinking into a warm bath to nurse my battered spirit. Because they're all battered in their own way. Battered but finding a way to carry on. I appreciated Jenna's story line a lot because I identify with her desire to pursue a creative career and her dreams deferred. But there were elements of Betsy's and Ty's stories that hit home, too.

Lauren did a wonderful job of drawing me in and keeping me interested, keeping me invested. It all felt very natural. The story had a great rhythm, too! It really felt like a hurricane season. There were moments of quiet, the tension of a possible storm, a lull, the anticipation of waiting to see what the next one will do, another anxious lull, the building momentum, the storm, and the sudden stillness of the aftermath. It really was a lovely read.

I would absolutely recommend this!

Jenna is in her mid-20’s and a single mom of young girls. She lives in Nashville where is she manages a coffee café. Since her early teen’s she has dreamed of becoming a professional photographer. Her parents (now deceased) told her after high school that she needed to find a real career that would make money. She has never given up on that dream. Jenna is given the opportunity to go attend a prestigious photography camp in Central Florida for two weeks. She decides on a whim to call her older sister, Betsy, to see if she could watch the girls while she is away. Her sister agrees!! She loves the camp and is given an opportunity that she cannot pass up? Will her dreams finally come true?

Thirty year old, Betsy, and her husband, Ty, own a dairy farm in Southern Alabama. While Ty tends to the farm, Betsy gives tours to school groups and camps. She dreams of having a family of her own but is having fertility problems. Betsy agrees to take care of her nieces, which makes her realize how much she wishes she could have kids of her own. The two weeks of babysitting grows into August. She grows closer to her nieces while her husband seems to be growing apart. Then a hurricane brews in the gulf and is headed their way. Can they save their farm and their marriage?

Hurricane Season is the second book by Lauren K Denton. The POV’s are told by Jenna, Betsy, and Ty. I enjoyed reading their views as the book progressed. I was able to meet the author and buy a signed book copy of her first book, The Hideaway, at the Louisiana Book Festival. Both of her books are perfect to read on the front porch with a glass of iced tea. I would definitely recommend them both and looking forward to reading future books of the author. Four stars.

I would have given it higher except for the following two reasons: 1) I felt the ending was a little rushed. 2) I live in Southern Louisiana. If there is a major hurricane (I believe book said a cat 4) heading my way, my butt would have been out of here. More and likely, there would have been mandatory evacuations as well. I could not see putting two small children through all of that. If anything, I think Betsy, Jenna, and the girls would evacuated to a hotel in North Alabama and Ty would have stayed with the farm to take care of the animals.

I read and enjoyed Lauren Denton's debut novel The Hideaway. It was a neat Women's Fiction novel with rich characterization and an unique setting. So I knew what I was getting into when reading her second book, The Hurricane Season. A southern setting with interesting characters is what I expected from Denton, and she delivered.
The writing was clear and concise. I had no problem visualizing the setting and watching Betsy and Ty interact with each other and the little girls on their farm. The farm came to life and made for a rich setting for this story.
The characters of Jenna and Betsy were rich and literary in nature. Denton does a great job at bringing the character's deepest sorrows to life and allow me to understand their dilemma even though I haven't dealt with their exact issues. I could feel Betsy's struggle with wanting kids of her own. I could feel Jenna's desire to seek her artist outlet. I loved the struggle between Ty and Betsy as a married couple. Denton does a great job at inviting into their lives and their internal struggles.
The plot flowed well and kept me entertained. I had a hard time putting the novel down. I kept thinking the worst would happen with Jenna and Betsy. One of the two problems I had with the plot was the happy ending. Too easy for what the plot has been leading up to. My other problem was the idea of the symbolism of The Hurricane Season. It also felt very anti-climatic of an idea. I think the whole hurricane thing should be more important to the novel instead of something coming in the background. Then 95 percent into the novel, it makes it appearance and then disappears.

Overall, The Hurricane Season by Lauren Denton is a character rich novel filled with an interesting and heart-felt plot I really enjoyed. But the ending and the hurricane element left something to be desired. If you enjoyed Denton's debut novel, The Hideaway, then this book might be right up your aisle. Fans of Catherine West and Julie Cantrell, I believe, might enjoy this novel.

I received a complimentary copy of The Hurricane Season by Lauren Denton, but the opinions stated are all my own.

2 sisters, each with their own strengths, find that family bonds keep you together through life of you believe in them. Betsy has found what she loves on the dairy farm with her husband as Jenna searches for what she desires. Their family life paths come together as everyone's does in reality.

I don’t think Lauren Denton can write a bad book. Hurricane Season was moderately paced and had great character development. The writing wasn’t overly done and I appreciated that because it made the slower pace of the book easier to get through.

Such a beautiful cover that I was drawn to this book on Netgalley almost despite myself. I read the synopsis and it sounded good so off I went!

The story of Betsy and Ty being asked to take Jenna's children while she went off to a photography retreat is an age old one in some ways. Many times there's a more responsible sibling that is left to clean up behind the less responsible one. That's what happened in the past and what Betsy and Ty are expecting to happen here.

The dairy farm and the descriptions of the cows, the girls' interactions with them and the school tours ~ just all of it pulled me in and made me lose myself in the book for hours at a time. My heart broke at different times for each sister and for Ty, working so hard to keep something that had been in his family for generations.

I can say I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending. It seemed like the author felt she had to hurry up and finish and there were many questions left hanging. That said, this was a beautiful book made more special by the author's skill with descriptions and the ability to make the reader feel as if they are there.

Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and Ms. Denton for a wonderful ARC to read.

As a young farmer and his wife prepare to brace against a hurricane, they learn something about the love of family and their need for their own quiet space among the storm.
Betsy's sister, Jenna, on a whim drops her two children with Betsy and her husband Ty when she gets a scholarship to attend an art retreat at a place called Halcyon. Jenna learns a lot about herself and just gets back into her photography so she decides to extend her retreat.
Betsy and Ty keep the girls longer, because they don't have much choice in the matter. Along the way the both work through their aching hearts of not being able to have a child of their own and find their way back to a place that they both have missed between them.
The ending wasn't very satisfying, not knowing if Betsy and Ty become pregnant. But I was glad that Jenna was able to work things out and come out stronger in the end.

Wonderful book, thanks for the advanced copy. I haven't read her before and look forward to reading her previous book. This book can be read nearly in one setting. You really get into the lives and drama that transpire. The weather is used as an underlying tone in the story - a hurricane actually. it really makes you figure out if your are strong enough to survive and what is important. This was a great read and I will recommend it to my friends.

Good book, though I didn’t find it as compelling as her first book. Lauren Denton is a gifted writer, and she kept me guessing as to how everything would turn out for the two sisters at the center of the story.

In Ms. Denton’s latest release, Hurricane Season, she tells the story of two sisters. In this book she examines their past and how they got to where they are now and how they currently are. This book reveals the relationships of the people connected to the sisters and the impacts they have made on their choices and lives. This was the first time that I have read a book by Ms. Denton, but it will not be my last. This book is refreshing and uplifting. The story of healing and how to get through difficult times is a great example of how we all should live in this imperfect world. I highly recommend you read this book!
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, this is my own opinion.
