Turns out, no matter how I'm taught, sewing isn't for me, but the Complete Book of Sewing Techniques really makes me try. It's a talent that is in my family yet somehow skipped me. I like the photos, instructions, and breakdown, but there's a disconnect between my brain and my hands -- even the sewing machine is daunting to me. However, with this book, my attempts at hemming and sewing buttons have gotten a bit better and my confidence is slowly growing (very, very slowly).

I must apologise for not being able to review this book after you so kindly accepted my request. I have had an unfortunately challenging time, but am now free to resume reading and reviewing. I hope that you will not hold my difficulties against me in future requests

Wow! Hats off to Ms. Gardiner for tackling this massive subject in one book.. The techniques seem correct for the most part. The difficulty lies in that it is rather inaccessible. While there is an extensive index, you would have to know the name of the technique you needed in order to find it. You could read it cover to cover, but it's rather dry as most technical writing is. I tried to imagine novice sewers reading the information. It is certain they would frequently become lost and confused. The descriptions and explanations definitely require previous sewing knowledge to be understood.

This book is the ideal book for any person interested in sewing, whether they are a complete novice or a more advanced seamstress. This book holds a wealth of knowledge and is the sort of book that you could find yourself going back to again and again for information and advice.

As a very average sewer I found this book to be informative, thorough and helped with my creativity. The step-by-step instructions with photographs, make learning to see easier - especially because I am a visual learner.
Wendy has missed nothing and her guide to everyday technique like hemming I found valuable because my trousers always need taking up.

Her comprehensive information on fabrics and threads is great for beginners because I know I am often overwhelmed with choice, and get confused what are the right resources for a project.

I definitely recommend this to beginner sewers.

Excellent sewing book. Fantastic addition to any sewer's bookshelf, be them a novice, master or anything in between.

This book has all you need for starting to sew. It’s a great tool, or go to when trying to teach a sewing group. I found the color photos and instructions to be well-written and thorough. You can really pick up at whatever level you are at and start something today. It helps you with picking fabrics and what kind is good for what you’re looking at making. It also talks about thread, needles, patterns, etc. I’ve been encouraged to see the pattern part. Maybe I’ll be brave soon and bust out a pattern to make. Here’s to hoping it turns out. 
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have been sewing for several years and I have read a few sewing books. This one is the easiest to read that I've found, and well illustrated. The explanations were easy to follow and comprehensive. I shall be recommending it to my craft club as an essential book to add to our small library.

Sewing is a rather new interest of mine. My mom is mostly a quilter, though she used to sew Barbie clothes for me, and my maternal grandmother made clothes for me when I was little. And both my aunts sew and quilt as well. In fact, though I’ve just gotten really interested in sewing (my new obsession, truthfully), I recall first being put in front of a sewing machine at the age of nine. My aunt had me practice by sewing quilting squares together in the evenings. Despite my only mild interest, my mom gifted me an older machine of hers many years ago, and it still works beautifully, so when I got the itch in the past few months, I had tools, but no guide (my mother and aunts live on the other side of the country). Enter Complete Book of Sewing Techniques by Wendy Gardiner.

When it comes to instructional books, I love pictures and clear instructions and this book has both. It assumes you know nothing and have nothing to start with. Need to know what kind of machine to get? This book will help you. Struggling to understand the different parts and attachments? This book will help you! It covers sergers and fabric types, has charts for converting yardage based on fabric widths, talks in detail about thread, needle types, rotary cutters and scissors, and all the little notions that go along with sewing. Interfacing, applique, patterns and pressing…it covers all of that, too!

After your tools are covered, it’s time to learn about technique: what stitches are used for what, what should be hand sewn vs. machine sewn, how to deal with seams and hems. And then it gets into the good stuff like darts and pockets, collars and cuffs, zippers, tucks and pleats. While there are no patterns or projects in this book, there are tons of well-explained examples supported by pictures. It isn’t overwhelming large or complex, just complete. If you’re pattern calls for interfacing, but you’ve never done that before, look it up in Complete Book of Sewing Techniques and you’ll be well on your way!

If you have any interest in sewing and don’t know where to start, this book should be your first purchase. Though I got it as a review copy, I’ll be buying it for myself. 

This is a great book for beginning sewers. It is easy to read and the photographs are clear and easy to understand. There is a section on taking correct measurements which is a big stumbling block for many people. Great basic information, but also a good reference for sewers with more experience.

The Complete Book of Sewing Techniques is very informative. It explains through description and/or images the basics of sewing on an electronic sewing machine. If you are interesting in learning to sew or are fairly new to it, this book is for you. It discusses sewing apparel mainly. If you quilt, there is very little for you to learn from this book. It, also, doesn't discuss much on using a serger either.

This is an excellent book to keep at hand when undertaking any sewing project. It is especially good for beginners but would also be a great reference for the more experienced sewer. The illustrations and detail level of the instructions are excellent. Easy to understand and easy to follow. Definitely one to keep at hand - thank you

This is an easy to follow almost fools guide to the complete world of sewing. I found the easy to follow step by step guide on techniques as well as details to consider such as fabric choice really useful. I loved the addition of ‘helpful hints’ throughout the book and the accompanying diagrams and photos really helped picture and guide me to the end product.
