I had a hard time following the story, partly because I haven't watched the movie yet. However, it did make me more interested in the movie itself, and I believe that if I finished watching the movie, I would definitely come back to enjoy the mange more. Needless to say, the drawings were very well done, and from one who hasn't watched the movie yet, the characters seem to still be drawn in the same manner as in the movie. I believe, those who have already watched the movie and enjoyed it will have a great time with this book

I didn't even know Disney and Tokyo Pop collaborated to make manga, so that was cool to find out.

This was a one sitting read and it's really made me wanna watch this film again, which is one of my all time favourites.

The reason it doesn't get an amazing review is just because it was literally the same as the film, with no added content or any sort of exploration into other ideas/characters, which could have been fun. But the point of this is, it made the story feel lesser... If that makes sense. Like it was rushed and blocky and didn't flow that well.

The other reason the stars aren't a full 5/5 is because the manga layout on the PC isn't very good. It's not flipped to the traditional style of manga reading so you literally have to go to the last page to begin. As well as this, it only said there were 3 pages whilst I was reading, which there clearly wasn't and this made it awkward to navigate and accurately update my progress.

I was hoping for a full burst into the Jack's Lamnet song, but we did get some nice snippets which encouraged me stick on the soundtrack in the background to accompany my reading.

The characters were all the same loveable rogues, but (now this may just be me) I felt Sally seemed to be amped up in the stalker profile in this which made her a little over bearing in the beginning! I hate saying that as she's a favourite character of mine.

It was a fun filler and something different to do than just watching the film over and over again, but it was just a watered down copy. The film is much more prefered.

3.5/5 Stars

If you're familiar with The Nightmare Before Christmas stop-motion movie, there's nothing new in this manga volume story-wise. It was a faithful adaptation with beautiful illustrations. Not all stories work when presented in black and white art but it lent this one a more spooky and whimsical quality.

It's hard not to compare it to the movie and the previous picture book. While it was excellently done, this isn't the place for people new to the story to start. I would recommend watching the movie first. That being said, for people like me who have loved this story since they watched it, this volume makes an excellent addition to their manga collection.

I LOVE the movie. One of the best ever and it's in my top three. If like me, you love the movie. You will love this. There really isn't much to say other than that. This is a great manga and follows the movie very very well. The art is freaking perfect. Honestly, all I can say is, if you love the movie, you will want this one your shelf. It's a perfect combo to have and anytime you want to visit this world but don't have time to watch the movie, this is a fast read and you get the story you love in a new and fun format!

*Thanks yo NetGalley for this book for my honest review*

The only thing manga in this graphic novel is reading right to left.

Disappointing manga adaptation of the Tim Burton movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. I love the movie and I love manga. I thought this would be a perfect fit for me. However, this is an exact retelling of the movie's plot with identical illustrations. None of the features of manga, such as big eyes and colorful hair, are incorporated in the book's art. This is especially disappointing since the publisher is Tokyopop, my favorite manga supplier.

This graphic novel may be acceptable to a collector of Nightmare memorabilia or parents who want a bedtime story version of their child's favorite film. However, all others would be better served by watching the movie. 2 stars.

Thanks to the publisher, Tokyopop, and netgalley for an advanced review copy.

This story did not really work for me in this format. Although I quite like the illustrations, it simply missed the magic of the original. Such a shame, as I was really looking forward to reading this.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is among my all-time favorite films. Starting October 1st and going well into the end of December this film is a regular viewing. So, it goes without saying that I was incredibly excited to be able to experience it across a different medium, though wary in regards to its possible inability to capture the same magic that can be found in the film.

First, a bit of plot (though if you’re reading this or any review on this manga chances are you’re familiar with it): The Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack “The Pumpkin King” Skellington. Having grown tired of his mundane life in Halloween Town he sets off on a journey to find what is missing in his life. It is in this journey where he stumbles across Christmas Town, a land full of color, snow, and joy. Jack takes it upon himself to take over the Christmas holiday and make it the grandest of all.

My immediate concern when I set upon reading this story in manga form was that it would simply not translate well outside of film. The film itself is a such a visual and musical experience and these things just cannot be done in written form alone. To this point, I think I was mostly correct in my concerns. While the artwork itself is very well done and not something to be dismissed, the colorful world that was present in the film makes the one found in the manga feel almost soulless.

With that said, reading through this manga is far from a waste of time. The store is all there and the characters all present. I do feel that this version does put more emphasis in the romance as much more of this story seems to focus on Sally. While all these events did come through in the film they felt more immediate and up-front here. This is something some may enjoy and something others may not care too much for.

Overall, the ability to experience this story in a different medium is itself a treat. My kids enjoy reading stories at bedtime and I can guarantee you that this manga is going onto that bedtime reading shelf as a fun experience for us all to enjoy reading through together.

The story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, in manga form.

Didn't really work for me. The manga helped me that a lot of the charm in the movie is in the audio—the music and the voice acting. The movie's fun, with catchy songs and a charming fairy-tale aspect to it. The writing here didn't capture that.

The art's good, and the "be yourself" message still came through. I wonder, though, if people who haven't seen the movie will get much from this.

The art work in this graphic novel: manga is beautiful. It's almost like watching behind the seems of the claymation movie it's incredible. I loved it very much and as The nightmare before Christmas is one of my favorite movies I might go out and buy this for my shelves.
I recommend!

I’ve always been in love with Tim Burton and especially his Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s always been my favourite movie and when I saw the option to read Nightmare Before Christmas, I just had to do it!

Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack, the Pumpkin King, and Sally. Jack is a little tired of Halloween and wants something new. On a walk he discovers Christmas and decides that he wants to be Santa. In order to be Santa, he must make Christmas decorations and even capture, Santa… During all these events, Sally is struggling with her creator, Finklestein, and is helplessly in love with Jack. Besides being in love with him, she’s also scared that something is going to happen.
Can Jack make a great Christmas and does Sally find the courage to tell Jack how she really feels?

Like I mentioned above, I’ve always been in love with Nightmare Before Christmas so how could I not like this? I LOVED IT! I liked the drawings and I liked the story (duh!). I’m so happy that I got the chance to read this graphic novel. I can’t even write a proper review because I just love Nightmare Before Christmas and it seems like that’s the only thing I can say!

If you’ve never read or watched Nightmare Before Christmas, make sure to do it because it’s so beautiful!

To anyone who knows me, it's no secret that The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite movies. I didn't doubt that I would enjoy this quick Manga but it's always nice to have that confirmed. This is basically just the telling of the story but a bit more from Sally's perspective, which I really liked. All of the main parts of the movie have been captured, although, in this specific instance, the movie is better (generally if the movie comes before the book, it's better whole if it's based on a book, the book is better) but it was still an enjoyable read. This would be great for kids learning to read longer books than just picture books. There are still obviously quite a few pictures but the story carries on longer. It's also a great introduction to the way Manga is read so it can be used as a stepping stone for younger readers as well.

If you're a fan of Tim Burton's movie and reading, you will enjoy this. It's a retelling of the movie with beautiful artwork. I feel it isn't quite as magical a story without the music, however it is still a nice read.

I'm a huge fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas and it receives regular viewings in my home. Had no problems opening the file type. First of all the artwork is fantastic, while it cannot match the wonder of the stop motion movie it definitely is a very well drawn adaptation. Only 4 stars because like many others I found the font a bit too small on certain instances of dialogue and because of the different medium it did lose some of what makes the film so great (the songs and stop motion mainly). It made me want to rewatch the film and I think I'd class that as a success.

This is a manga version of the 1993 movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Jack Skellington, the ruler of a Halloween centric world, called Halloween Town, comes across a door that leads him into a new world. A world that shows him the joys of Christmas, Christmas Town. Jack wants to replicate this world in his own world because he is becoming bored of the constant repetition. He has all of his citizens work together to create the holiday and this is when problems ensue.

I liked the overall premise of the story. When I was a child, I saw this movie but did not remember most of it when I read this book. I do remember that it creeped me out though. This was an interesting manga.

I love the Pumpkin King. Jack's innocence when he found about Christmas and how he wanted to recreate the joyful feelings of it was enduring. The way he goes about accomplishing this is not the best idea but he just wanted to spread the Christmas feeling.

The artwork was nice to look at. It was reminiscent of the style of the movie, just in black and white. The style was nice but it loses some of the magic without the stop-motion animation and the music.
I'll have to watch the movie again to compare it to this. If you are interested in this manga I would pick it up. I don't feel that it would disappoint a fan of the movie.

This is definitely an interesting concept and I think that it would be cool to see the other doorways in the forest that Jack comes across. I would watch those movies. Let's have Jack go into another door and become obsessed with St. Patrick's Day or Easter.

Also, I'm going to be watching the movie this weekend and doing a review on that.

This manga adaptation of The Nightmare Before Xmas has some great artwork. However, a lot of the font is on the small side and without the soundtrack the story falls a bit flat. Overall, I just don't think it measures up to the film.
