Great for The Nightmare Before Christmas fan. Nicely Illustrated but found the captions a little on the small side but others may not find this.

*thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

4 stars

Omg, this was amazing! I absolutely love the movie and reading this, expecually the song lyrics, made me feel like I was watching the movie version of it again. Its such a fun read. I love the characters and the story line. If you are a fan of the movie or like Tim Burton's style, then this book by Jun Asuka is a must!

I'm sad to say that I have a few books from Netgalley that I DNF on... either it didn't hook me into the story and I lost least or I found out that there is more to the series and can't get the first and so on book from that series... Yup here it goes, Don't believe me wash the dishes! Look at the website: http://fkrants.blogspot.com/2017/09/ng-dnf-sept-edition.html

Interesting and new way to follow the story of the much loved classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, was such a great read and brought new life to the well loved story. Was such a great format & one I hadn't thought of before as working for this story. Will keep an eye out for this in the shops

Loved reading this one. Would have enjoyed it in color more.

A must have for any 'Nightmare before Christmas' fan.

The manga is directly based on the movie, it's a fun different version of everyone's favorite Halloween story.

My edition was hard to read, half the pages were cut off, but I know the story so well I could fill it in. I will be buying a copy of this manga when it hits shelves.

I was in grade school when I've watched Tim Burton's movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. Without knowing the synopsis and I was really young then, the characters of Halloween Town are quite scary to watch. Moreover, I think it really scared me to the point on what are the odds that what happened in the movie could really happened in real life. That was undeniably a terrifying scenario for a young kid — it is indeed a nightmare!

Reading this manga adaptation of the Tim Burton's work is like reminiscing the storyline. Yet, I only gave this four stars because it didn't capture the movie's thrilling atmosphere. However, reading this made me want to re-watch the movie soon and compare this manga to the original.

I am not a big fan of the movie, never really saw the appeal. My boyfriend is a huge fanatic to the point of multiple massive tattoos and that is just the small stuff. So I thought I would give it a shot as a book. I much prefer books to movies after all. I still wasn't impressed. The book literally had a different font for when the characters were singing, but it was never addressed that they were. It felt like a lazy adaption. I wanted a manga, I got an adaption that rivals Adam & Steve for lame (the book literally referenced a famous drag queen coming on stage by her name and it was pretty awful). I just expected more from Tokyopop.

The art was consistent and well done. There was nothing technically wrong with the book, but it just wasn't exciting. It is hard to bring the fun of a musical to a written work. I did like that there was more Sally than I remember in the movie though. she is the only real character that made sense throughout the movie.

The book isn't bad and it is a great way to get a young reader into manga in a very safe and easy way. Give it a shot, but it didn't do anything for me.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a HUGE fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas. It's probably one of my favorite movies, and I love the soundtrack. I was so excited last fall when I got to meet Jack and Sally at Disney. That being said, this wasn't amazing. My rating is biased based on my love for the source material (actual rating being a 3.5 star). This manga was a retelling of the movie, which I loved, except it wasn't as good as the movie. There was nothing really new about it, and the story was simplified (due to the different medium of storytelling, but in this case, I think it did a disservice to the original material). I would get excited when some of the dialogue would be the songs from the movie, only to be disappointed when it was always condensed and paraphrased into the actual dialogue (instead of song). Overall, this made me just want to rewatch the movie, and not worry about the manga.

I don't really recommend this unless you are a really big fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas and need something more related to it.

A brilliantly illustrated telling of the original story. Featuring all the characters and even some songs that were in the film.

As good as the movie, minus the soundtrack!

I'm a huge NMBC fan so of course I jumped at the opportunity to read this on NetGalley! Story was great (as to be expected; it's the same as the movie) and I loved the illustrations. My copy was a little disjointed but I suspect that's from it being an arc.

The publisher provided me with the opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback. (via NetGalley)

Personally, I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. The story was ok. Maybe I am just too old to enjoy these mangas. I would recommend to my nieces and nephews though

This manga is by far my least favorite Nightmare Before Christmas Project.
The manga adapts the movie mostly accurate with a touch of the Tokyo Pop cuteness. The cuteness does not override Tim Burton's original style but softens it slightly for the manga style. But the black white and white works against the atmosphere, especially when Jack arrives in Christmas town.
The dialogue takes mostly from the movie and the many of the songs are included. But what confuses me is how Jun Asuka decided when to quote directly from the movie and when not to. I was thrown off because the first page misquotes the beginning of the film and "This Is Halloween" is removed. Luckily, most of the other songs are included. There are a couple that are include in their entirety but most are just pieces with other dialogue injected. For me, most of the best lines from the songs have been left out.
The manga isn't bad but I'm a die hard fan and it just didn't do it for me.

It was just okay. We are big fans of Jack Skellington around this place, and this Manga didn't live up to our high standards.

As a long time fan of Nightmare Before Christmas & Tim Burton I feel like this manga version was beautifully done! It keeps in line with the original story and the animation is just right with no cheese.
Would highly recommend to any NBC or Tim Burton fans!

It’s always called ‘Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and was certainly based upon a story and characters by created by Burton but the original 1993 animated feature was actually directed by Henry Selick, and also owes much of the affection and esteem in which it's held to Danny Elfman, who not only wrote the music but provided the singing voice of Jack Skellington (among others).

This Manga version of the familiar story is well illustrated in black and white by Jun Asuka. Some might lament that it’s not in colour but if any story is thematically suited to black and white it should be this one.

I imagine that those, like myself, already familiar with the film will be pleased that it’s faithful to the original storyline, although I also suspect that a person coming to the story for the first time through this medium would experience a little difficulty in following precisely what was going on.

Ultimately, however, the chief problem with this book is that one is bound to make comparisons with the movie which will always be to the book’s disadvantage thus while those, like myself, who are already fans of ‘Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’ may well enjoy owning this version its pleasures are vestigial rather than vital in nature.

I love The Nightmare Before Christmas so naturally I loved this manga novel. Jun Asuka did a really good job with the manga illustrations that it didn't distract from the story at all for those that may be wondering if it strays too far from Burton's vision for the movie.

A Disney retelling in manga of the Nightmare Before Christmas. Not much new here, even the artwork doesn't really give me much of a new take on this story.
