Rather academic and dull introduction to a fascinating character and a what might have been world. Encouraged me to read more on the subject.

I received a free Kindle copy of American Cicero by Saladin Ambar courtesy of Net Galley and Oxford University Press, the publisher. It was with the understanding that I would post a review to Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and my nonfiction book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google Plus pages.

I requested this book as I have an interest in New York history as a native of the state and in Mario Cuomo in particular. This is the first book by Saladin Ambar that I have read.

This book is well researched and written. The author's style is engaging which makes this book a fairly quick read. Ambar divides Cuomo's career into four parts starting with his ascension to the governorship, his passing up two opportunities to run for President and his defeat in attempting a fourth term as Governor of New York. It is insightful and deals with some of the myths as to why Cuomo never ran for President to his strong belief in the ability of government to help those less fortunate overcome obstacles to success.

I recomend this book to anyone who has an interest in the history of New York and in particular the time period in which Mario Cuomo was governor of the state.
