The Comics of Charles Schulz contains a variety of essays on Peanuts, a variety of sociological or psychological idea and how said issues are applied with in the comics.
I am usually a fan of thoughtful essays about pop culture. So any forms of entertainment has much deeper meanings and applications that just amusement. The Comics of Charles Schulz is a more scholarly version to these books. To this extent, they aren't written for mass consumption. They are written for other scholars and get very verbose and often down right boring.
But this is not to say the book doesn't pursue worth wild ideas and thoughts. There were several where I really appreciated the work put into the comic and this research as well.
Made for scholars, I wouldn't recommend this book to casual fans. But if someone is looking for an intellectual look into the work of Schulz, I would highly recommend this.

I agree with the author: it's about time serious analysis of his work should be undertaken , discussed, debated and shared in our hallowed institutions of higher learning. The breadth and freshness of his work has been inspirational to all readers and media , not just for the smile, but the humanity he conveyed throughout his extensive career. This book is a huge accomplishment in addressing this issue.

*thank you to University Press of Mississippi and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

1 star.
This just wasnt for me but thats not to say that others who are big fans of the show, would give the same mark. If you are a huge fan, this is probably a great read for you so for that reason I would recommend it. I was expecing more comic strips but the ones that were included were fun to read.

This is a lovely look at the Peanuts Cartoons and life in general. It comes from a university press, and was not what I was anticipating. It is a look not just at the cartoons themselves (as there are few in this book) but more about what they mean, what brought about scenes, what brought about characters. This is a study, but a fascinating one. It made for a slow thoughtful read.

This is not what I expected in thus book. I was interested as a fan and thought there would be comics, but there is so much more. You learn great details including back details about the topics of the comic strip. It is an interesting book.

I've always loved Peanuts! Charles Shultz came to speak at my junior high when I was in 7th grade and I still remember meeting and talking to him even after all these years. We were all so impressed - he was a rock star of comics!!

It's fascinating to read these essays and insights on the hidden meanings of Shultz's cartoons. The cartoons can be enjoyed on so many levels from the simple joy of the 'funny part' to the hidden meanings that reveal the serious issues covered.

There are some very thought-provoking ideas in these essays. Shultz's cartoons have remained relevant through the years. Most topics are just as important today as they were 50 years ago.

A collection of essays about Charles Schulz and his Peanuts. Different point of view to see deepness when usually I saw light and easy fun....For the lover and super fan of this comic. Not for everybody.

Una collezione di saggi per andare in profonditá dove io avevo visto fino ad ora un immediato divertimento. Differenti punti di vista per i veri fan e i super amanti del genere, ma non per tutti.

THANKS TO NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
