As a manga fan, I was really surprised and interested when I saw that there is an actual adaptation to Poe's poems and short-stories. I would definitely recommend this manga to every Edgar Allan Poe fan. The stories are well-known and very good just like the characters, though the art was not that appealing and for me it lacked some things.

This graphic novel includes: The Tell-tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Fall of the House of Usher.

Overall it was very enjoyable. 4 stars.

Written in a genre that I scarcely read, I was dubious that some of the most famous words of Edgar Allan Poe would translate to the medium in a way that readers would understand. As a huge fan of Poe and his body of work, I was pleasantly surprised as to how well the author and illustrator were able to express Poe's intentions.

This graphic novel includes: The Tell-tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Fall of the House of Usher. With a few strokes of ink and Poe's words, all of the stories were well adapted from the original. I found it hard to pick a favorite, as this book represents the best works of the author. The Tell-tale Heart was a good choice for the beginning, as it sets the tone for the rest of the book. Readers will be able to appreciate the horror aspects of some of the stories and the overall sadness that the words of Poe evoke. Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe is a great introduction to readers who may not have chosen this author in his original medium. I highly recommend this graphic novel, as well as the other Manga Classics by this author.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I flipped to the first page (at the back!) of this book. While I've read comics and graphic novels, this was the first manga I have ever picked up. And quite frankly, other than knowing that manga was a popular style of comic, I had no idea what I was in for.

Thankfully, my introduction to manga was a brilliant one. I love classic literature to begin with, and Poe is a particular favourite of mine. I finished a re-read of his complete works only a few months ago, so I was delighted to see this adaptation.

Delighted, and somewhat concerned. All book lovers will be familiar with that tickle of apprehension at the words "adaptation of the classic tale..." None of us want our favourite works sullied by terrible adaptations.

Frankly, I wish these publishers would extend their available library of manga classics, because "The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe" was brilliant. There are several stories in the volume, illustrated (spectacularly!) by separate artists but with similar enough styles to lend a cohesive vision and flow to the overall work. The attention to detail in every single graphic is stunning, and they have managed to encapsulate the creepy, mysterious imaginarium of Poe to fantastic effect. I was even happier when I realized that a couple of the stories that have been selected for graphic adaptation are my favourites from Poe’s oeuvre. This volume contains The Raven; The Cask of Amontillado; The Fall of the House of Usher; and The Tell-Tale Heart; and The Masque of the Red Death. Unbelievably, the artwork somehow manages to capture exactly what I think the scene or the character or the tone of the story should look like, and while I have no idea how they managed it, I applaud the artists!

As an adult, I think this manga is brilliant. As a teenager, I would have thought it mind-blowing. Given how visually-oriented teenagers and young adults are, and how difficult it can be trying to convince them that books are worth the time required to read them, a graphic adaptation of classic literature is a great idea. I really wish these had been around when I was younger, and I seriously encourage people of all ages to have a look at manga classic literature adaptations: they are an excellent gateway to literature (and such pretty pictures, too!). I am honestly considering buying myself a hard copy of this volume, and maybe a couple of others because a) they are just gorgeous, and b) maybe I can convince more people to give classic lit a go if they're introduced to it in this format first?

This book brings Poe to life in moew ways than just the poems alone could do! Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Of course, Edgar Allan Poe's work is extremely well known, even by those who never read because of the movie adaptations over the years (think The Raven). I, myself, haven't read these stories until now. I could not get into the reading style of manga (this is my first one), where you read from right to left (from the back to the front). I would have enjoyed more colour in these stories, and some of the artwork could have been improved on. There are some that were superbly illustrated, like in Carnival in Casque. Overall, if you love manga, this would be a good one to add to your collection.  It just wasn't for me.

Everyone who likes Edgar Allan Poe, I would highly recommend this book to! The art is amazing as always, along with the story and the characters. They do a great job turning the book into manga. I love all of the different stories they put in this manga, and enjoy how creepy they are. I can't wait to buy this and have it in my collection.

First of all, forgive me people because I honestly haven't read a <b>SINGLE</b> work of Edgar Allan Poe. Partly because I'm intimidated with it and partly because I just don't have the time *coughs*too buys reading other books*coughs* so naturally, seeing that some of his works are compiled and simplified in a manga format I zoomed right into it without further ado.

I AM IN LOVE W/ IT MORE because aheem the manga format is just so pretty *sobs* and it had made the storytelling much more appealing and coherent. Overall, a wonderful and light read for me!

I enjoyed this graphic novel of Edgar Allen Poe stories. It's was neat to see illustrations. However, my biggest issue is that they were not in color. Poe's stories invite such vivid imagery that I feel like it would have enhanced them that much more. Which led me to a lower rating. Below is a 3 star rating, when it was closer to a 3.5 for me

This is such a faithful adaptation that the words are Edgar Allan Poe's. If you are a fan of his work or want a more reader-friendly version, this is for you. A handful of Poe's more famous works are illustrated in this manga. The illustrations do help make the language more accessible for younger or less worldly readers. Classic stories can be difficult to follow because of the language and this helps bridge that.
The animation is typical of manga and well done. My version was in black and white which is fairly normal for manga but I can't be certain it will be the same in the print version. However, the black and white was quite appropriate. I think I would have loved some color in Masque of Red Death because of the different colored rooms but that's the only time I missed there being color.
This is a tough review to write because you can't really criticize Edgar Allan Poe and I have no desire to. The book is great. I'm looking forward to purchasing a copy for my son who is a big fan of both Poe and manga. I highly recommend this book - it's a near perfect book because it takes Poe's amazing stories, without taking away his beautiful prose, and gives them another layer. More importantly, it makes his stories available to readers who wouldn't be able to fully enjoy his stories on their own.

Grisly and gory as any Poe books should be. The art works well with the stories and presents them in such a way as to support the prose but not eclipse it. I frequently find art in GNs to be too dark or too stark, but in this case, the art matches perfectly. The abridging of the stories is lamentable, but understandable.

I love Edgar Allan Poe and his unique writing style. This is my first manga and i am really happy because it is about Edgar Allan Poe stories and it is amazing.

Review: So, like my other reviews in this series I haven’t read anything by Edgar Allen Poe before although I have a vague idea of some of the stories like the tell-tale heart. I have loved all the manga classics I have read so far, and I don’t expect things to change with this one. As this is a collection of stories I am going to review them individually and then sum it up at the end.
The first story in the collection is the tell-tale heart and from the artwork on the opening page I can already tell I am going to love this art style. I was also surprised when I saw this for request because all the other classics have been romance based or child friendly except for this collection and Romeo and Juliet. The tell-tale heart is a story told through the perspective of a killer after the fact, we learn of a young man living with an older man neither given names. The younger man is disturbed by the look in the older man eye and decides to kill him for it and puts weeks of planning into the event and when the time comes he kills the older man and gets rid of the body. However, a scream is heard by a neighbour and the police arrive shortly after and the young man in confident that they won’t find anything, but he begins to hear the heartbeat of the older man and it eventually drive him to confess, leading to position he is in at the beginning of the tale.
The next story is the cask of Amontillado which I have never heard of before in my life. In this story like the tell-tale heart we meet a man who vows revenge against a man called Fortunato, however, he does this is a cunning way by not changing how he reacts to the man while he plans his demise. He tempts the man with a case of rare wine; amontillado and leads him down into the catacombs beneath his home all the while imploring him to return to making merry but the greedy Fortunato refuses. Eventually he leads to man to a niche wear he chains him and begins to build a wall closing him in and while Fortunato believes it is a joke for a while the harsh reality soon sets in but by then it is too late for him encased with only the dead for company until he himself joins them.
We then reach one of Poe’s most famous stories; the Raven. This is a strange story from what I can gather it is about a young man consumed by grief after losing his love named Lenore. In the night a raven comes into his home saying one word nevermore to all the man questions and it ends either with the man dying or coming to terms with the fact that his love is forever lost. Honestly, I didn’t know what to make of it, but it was very interesting to read. By this point in the collection the art styles of the different artists are quite easy to distinguish but my favourite so far is the artwork in the raven done by pikomaro.
The next story is the masque of the read death. This story is about a plague that kills many people in the Kingdom whose prince Prospero turns his back on them sealing himself and his most faithful within the walls of his castle. The sickness nicknamed the red death the rich believe they have sealed outside and leave the world beyond the castle to fend for itself. This continues for many months with parties and festivities inside and death outside until a masquerade takes place and a person turns up with the visage of a corpse and kills the Prospero and then the others begin to die until no one is left but the red death.
The final story in this collection is the fall of the house of Usher. We meet the best friend of Head of the House of Usher, Roderick Usher who is travelling to see his old friend after receiving a letter saying he was suffering from some mental illness and wanted to see his friend once more. He stays with his friend for a long time even helping him to bury his twin sister after her death although he sees his friend slow descend into madness believing he buried his sister while she was still alive. His friend tries to comfort him but is proven right when the walking corpse of his twin comes to take him to, the friend barely manages to escape with his life as the House of Usher literally falls around him.
Out of all the stories in this collection my favourite must be the Raven because the art work was beautiful, the language is poetic and very easy to understand and the story itself is a piece of art encompassing so many emotions within. However, my least favourite would be the fall of the House of Usher, mainly because the story was confusing, overly long and I didn’t care for the artwork.

I enjoyed this adaptation very much. The art style went very well with Poe's works, and I would be interested to see the artist's interpretation of other author's works

I absolutely loved this manga adaptation of Poe's stories! The art styles were different for each story but beautifully rendered and they very much suited the stories' mood, setting and time period.

I have never read the actual stories of Poe, but these manga adaptations were an absolutely wonderful introduction to his work. I especially loved how the setting and character's expressions were shown during long monologues.

The Masque of the Red Death was my favourite story-wise. As for the art style, I loved all of them equally because the different art styles were so appropriate for each story. I especially loved the way Usher was drawn. His gaunt face and his eyes were very expressive and matched the description from the novel perfectly. The atmosphere of the masquerade in Red Death was absolutely beautiful.

I'll even go as far as to say that I would not have enjoyed all of these stories as much if I had not read them in manga form. This was a great read!

An excellent manga adaptation of Poe's works. I have not previously read these stories and have a feeling I would not enjoy them as much outside of this manga format. The art styles were all distinct and very appropriate for each story. I especially loved the art during the masquerade scene in Masque of the Red Death and the way Usher was drawn in The Fall of the House of Usher.

I loved Edgar Allen Poe as a teenager, then reread his stories recently and found many of them lurid and immature. This Manga adaptation has breathed new life into them for me and I find I can appreciate them once more. Gorgeous artwork that really captured the spirit of these chilling tales.

As a huge fan of Edgar Allen Poe, I jumped at the chance to read and review this graphic novel. I loved the illustrations and the style of art. The Raven, and A Tell-Tale Heart are my favorite, and this illustrator did a wonderful job at recreating it. Completely stunning, and I will definitely be on the lookout for more graphic novels by this illustrator.

This will make an excellent addition to any middle school or high school classroom that already reads Poe's work, especially for students who struggle with the language. Any fan of Edgar Allan Poe will enjoy this collection, which includes "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Raven," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Fall of the House of Usher."

I liked seeing these stories that I've read so many times adapted as manga, the art looks nice and really conveyed the mood and atmosphere. Overall, very solid collection!
