I've never read manga before, but I think this was a great way to be introduced. Poe's stories are so delightfully creepy, and the illustrations in this were perfectly eerie and scary. I love that this form of comic might introduce more people to Poe's work.

This was okay, I am just not the biggest manga fan and it took me a while to get my head around the right to left reading way. I just don't personally feel this is the way Poe's work should be read; But it is an interesting way for Poe's work to be read by people who aren't normally interested in classics or poetry.

Comic Itself: 4/5

Written as a comic:4/5

The comics themselves are written and drawn nicely. I had hoped comic form would help enjoy Edgar Allan Poe's stories but even them couldn't help.

Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe by Edgar Allan Poe, Stacy King, and multiple artists

4 stars

This is a collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous tales. I have never thought about what Poe’s work would be like it were translated into a manga medium, but I’m glad that I decided to request this on Netgalley because I have been a fan of the Manga Classics series, but I am also a fan of Poe. The two combinations cohesively melded together and made this collection very enjoyable. There was only one story in this collection that I did not like seeing brought to life, but besides that one failure, this collection is incredibly impressive and does a fantastic job of bringing Poe’s ominous style to life through haunting visuals.

The Tell-Tale Heart (Illustrated by Virginia Nitouhei) – 4.5 stars
I loved seeing this one brought to life, but it didn’t translate the lyrical suspense Poe relies heavily on in the story. I think that visuals took away from that hysterical maddening pace. I still really enjoyed the art in this one and there were times where I was chilled to the bone.

The Cask of Amontillado (Illustrated by Chagen) – 5 stars
This is one of my favorite Poe stories and it was so fun to see this brought to life. I’ve read this story multiple times now, so seeing it in a new medium really enhanced my appreciation for this tale and it was horrifying to see in images.

The Raven (Illustrated by pikomaro) – 4.5 stars
I don’t think that poetry translates well into manga. However, the final scene was incredible and it encapsulates the entirety of the story. That final image pretty much won me over and I can’t give it a lower rating because of that.

The Masque of the Red Death (Illustrated by Uka Nagao) – 4.25 stars
This was my first time reading this story and I think that because I have not read the original material the manga formatting confuddled me a bit. I was particularly confused by the plot, but I still really enjoyed reading this and I think it’s a haunting story.

The Fall of the House of Usher (Illustrated by Man Yiu) – 2 stars
I love this story, but it does not translate well into manga. There is a massive amount of description in the original story and it was attempted to be included in the panels. This made the experience very overwhelming and chaotic.

Art Scale (Overall Collection): 4

Overall, I definitely recommend this collection especially if you love Edgar Allan Poe. There were a lot of wonderful illustrations sprinkled throughout the pieces and it really captures Poe’s macabre vibe.

Cover Thoughts: It’s a nice cover, but it only uses art from The Tell-Tale Heart. I think if it had pieces from each story that would be much more inviting.

Thank you, Netgalley and Udon Entertainment, for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Poe is always a great read, and the illustrations in this book enhance the creepiness factor. Since manga is loved by many students, I think that this version will be read by some students who otherwise may have not chosen to read it. They might even read some of Poe's other tales which are not included herein....

Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe presents the gruesome classic tales of Edgar Allan Poe illustrated in manga format. The stories include: "The Raven," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Cask of Amontillado." Each story is drawn by a different artist, adding a new flavour into the world of Edgar Allan Poe. The drawings accompanied the eerie imagery found in Poe's writings. This is a perfect manga to read around Halloween, it is sure to give you chills.

The Stories Of Edgar Allen Poe is another adaptation by Stacy King, who has adapted several other Manga Classics including Sense And Sensibility. This was my first encounter with any of Edgar Allen Poe's works, and to say that the stories creeped me out would be an understatement considering that I write horror and creep-worthy fiction myself.

To be honest, this book did not please me like some of the other Manga Classics did; maybe it was because I wasn't able to connect with Poe's writing, or maybe because there were only a couple of stories. Either way, I didn't like this book enough to get and read other works by Mr Poe because having previously read Stacy King's other adaptations, I know that that it wasn't because of her or the illustrations, which were beautifully done to say the least.

The illustrations, as mentioned above, were awesome and spell-binding (literally!) They felt eerie and many times I stopped reading only to examine the illustrations more closely as they had such amazing details. Unfortunately, I received a very early ARC edition of this particular book, so some of the illustrations were only in black and white. Nonetheless, the illustrations were remarkable.

If you're anything like me and dread reading most fo the classics, then go ahead and give this one a read. It never hurts to have read the condensed and illustrated version of the most famous works of one of the greatest authors of their time.

Excerpt from Review: "...I must applaud the artistic talents of the illustrators who leant their talents to Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe: Virginia-Nitouhei, Chagen, Uka Nagao, pikomaro, Linus Liu, Man Yiue, Ron, Shougo and Stoon. They have brought the Edgar Allan Poe’s stories to life in a way I never could have imagined with my mind’s eye. What a terrific way to bring the works of Poe to the younger generations. I wish this had been available to me when I was a child – it would have heightened my experiences reading Poe when I was in school years ago. Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe is a great re-imagining some of the man’s most haunting tales."

I was given this title by NetGalley in return for an honest review.
The only Poe story I ever read was The Cask of Amontillado about 20 years ago, so I’m not that familiar with his original works. However, I enjoyed the collection of stories in this manga comic.
The artwork was magnificent and I appreciated the use of only black and white, which made the stories just that much more eerie.
As my first experience reading manga, I got the hang of it fairly quickly and finished the comic in one sitting.
Overall, I’m glad I found this collection and I would recommend it to anyone, who enjoys comics and retellings of classics.

This is a good representation of Ethat Allan How's works. It was an interesting take on stories long revered.

I absolutely adore Poe's writing and stories, and this book is a fantastic collection that's as gripping and atmospheric as it is entertaining and haunting. The comics add so much to the already sublime stories. It's brilliant.

This is the first manga novel that I have read, so took a little getting used to. I picked this up because of Edgar Allen Poe and was curious to see how an artist would draw his work and adapt to this format. It was quite impressive! The stories were true to the original and the drawings pulled out the sinister feel that pervades Poe's work.
Great fun!
Thank you NetGalley and publisher, Udon Publishing, for the opportunity to read this ARC.

It isn't easy adapting legendary work. While there's technically nothing wrong with this collection, I couldn't get into it simply because if the artwork. Not that it isn't nicely done, it is, but the lack of color threw me off. It, for me, needed that color. The stories would have exploded off the page.

This isn't a bad adaptation, I just like things a certain way. If you don't mind a lack of color, you'll enjoy the stories because they're nicely done.

Thanks to NetGalley and UDON Entertainment for the opportunity to read and review Manga Classics! Manga Classics include Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, which is true to the original classic with added cliffhangers to keep manga readers interested and eye-catching illustrations. After the story ends, the details of adaptation from classic literature to manga lets us see into the transformation. Each story in this collection follows these same guidelines! Impressive artwork and transformation!
Manga Classics also include The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (the only color is the scarlet letter A, which makes striking illustrations!), Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven. The Cask of Amontillado, The Masque of the Red death and The Fall of the House of Usher; Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and many more!
5 stars for books that make classics accessible and understandable to every reader!

This is my second graphic novel that i have read and it was super interesting. I found myself really getting in tune with what the characters were feeling. One bad thing is that the stories were too short. I wanted more and more! But other than that it was an awesome read!

**A copy of this book was provided to me via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review."

As an 8th grade reading teacher, I love to use Edgar Allan Poe's short stories in the classroom. My kids enjoy their creepiness, and I like the rich language and plot twists. Unfortunately, many of my students are below grade level (often significantly so) and are unable to access the text without help.

This manga adaptation of many of his classic tales is definitely going to be used in the classroom. We usually read "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado," both of which are included in this manga adaptation. For my lowest readers, I'll use it in small group prior to reading the story whole class, to help build their comprehension of the plot and characters, as well as preview key vocabulary. For my English Language Learners, the illustrations can help support language development and air in following the story with their peers. Plus, manga is VERY popular in my classroom library, so kids of all levels can read it independently to build their reading skills and enjoy Poe in a fun, non-intimidating way. This book can be a bridge to them reading the full texts on their own.

I do not claim to have read all of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories, not even every one in this collection. But I took a chance to see how this version matches up to what my mind's eye conjures upon reading the story or poem in question. And since this is a Manga version, you end up starting at the pack of the book and reading forward. The story telling was good, the pacing was nice, but the artwork in the Tell-Tale Heart and The Masque of the Red Death was off-putting. It just did not feel right. But the artist for The Fall of The House of Usher did a great job. So if you like Manga or Edgar Allen Poe, take a chance on this volume.

There is something magical about reading the classics in manga format. Stacy King does it again by capturing a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's stories and turning them into a beautiful narrative that fits brilliantly with the gorgeous art.

The way these volumes are done leaves a lasting impact on the reader, especially if it's a classic written in a form of old English that is difficult to interpret. I think these are magnificent for middle grade or high school students and a must have for any bookish manga lover!

Thank you to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for giving me a copy of this book for a fair and honest review!

The only story of Edgar Allan Poe that I've read was, The Cask of Amontillado, which was a required must-read by our high school teacher over a decade ago. It was both bizarre and gruesome, and reading it again in this graphic novel brought up how I was really horrified back then.

Aside from the aforementioned story, there are other four tales in this book: The Tell-Tale Heart; The Raven; The Masque of the Red Death; and The Fall of the House of Usher. This manga adaptation of some of the well--known stories of Poe is, I must say, a good way to make any readers to enjoy them more. I highly recommend this graphic novel and other manga classics published by Udon Entertainment to students — so they can vividly imagine and better understand these classic tales.
