I love Edgar Allan Poe and was delighted by this re-imagining!

I enjoyed this manga version of the classic book. It was a fun way for a new generation to learn about the classics.

Another great classic delivered in such an entertaining way, completely recommend it. Poe's stories are incredible already in their original form but in this way the day are utterly good. I will never get tired of reading them.

This was absolutely wonderful to read. I love Edgar Allen Poe so of course I loved this. This contains so many of my favorite poems by Poe. The Poems in this collection are:
•The Tell-Tale Heart
•The Cask of Amontillado
•The Raven
•The Masque of the Red Death
•The Fall of the House of Usher

I was really hoping that Annabel Lee would be in there, but it wasn't. This was still really good though and I really want a physical copy!

Loved this! I really wanted to get into manga and graphic novels this year, and it was perfect to start with stories I already know and love. The artwork was amazing and I could follow along easily. Hoping to be able to find a physical copy to buy because I just loved it so much!

While I’m deeply convinced that Poe had some psychological issues, I am a fan of his creepy writing. The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven are two of my favourite stories of his.

The Telltale Heart was well done in this manga format and the black and white illustration helped the creepy atmosphere of the story. However, with the rest of the stories I found the atmosphere lacking and I considered skimming through due to boredom. Alas the type A part of my personality forces me to read every word of a book. (Just call me Monica Geller 😂)

I feel that the Manga version of Poe’s stories would have been better served if the language was somewhat updated to fit the format of Manga.

My favourite story was The Red Death, but it would have been so much more effective if it was illustrated in colour, especially considering the description of the seven rooms. I loved the page at the end of each story with facts about that particular story and Poe.

This was surprisingly true to the source material. It was also interesting to experience an artist's interpretation of Poe's work. In this case, the art was quite spartan, rather than going into the detail that artist's renderings of gothic stories so often are. While I don't think this should ever serve as a substitute for the original, it's definitely an excellent way for readers to get to know Poe's work, especially since the art manages to convey the themes of fear, darkness, and madness in quite a compelling way.

Definitely worth picking up for fans of manga, younger readers, or readers who work better with visual cues rather than just words on the page.

I love Poe but maybe not in comic form. Or just not in manga form. This was my first manga and I have to say, I'm not really a fan. Back to front and right to left reading is backwards for me and it's an adjustment. I have two other Manga Classics so I'll get through those and see if it's something I want to continue to read.

I quite enjoy Manga Classics -- they're an easy way to become familiar with beloved classics, without the headache that usually comes with reading said classics. The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe was interesting, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to read more classically!

Manga Classic: The Stories of Edgar Allen Poe
by Edgar Allen Poe

I love the stories of Edgar Allen Poe, I did not like this art style, unfortunately! It was not for me.

2 Stars / C-

My love for Poe knows no bounds. And this was the manga I didn’t know I wanted.

I seem to only be drawn to manga that portrays stories that I already know. And, I’m totally okay with that.

If you’re an Edgar Allan Poe fan, I suggest you read this one. It’s got quite a few of his best stories.

And if you haven’t read Poe before; well, I suggest you start here because the illustrations really add to his awesomely macabre stories!

I love these manga adaptions! I love how faithful they are to the original stories and how classic the art style is. They're brilliant reads for grasping the story if one doesn't want to or doesn't have time to go through the originals. The Manga Classics are always a great read and this collection is no exception

Having read Poe’s works many years ago and new to Manga Classics, I was interested to see how the stories of Edgar Allan Poe could be interpreted. I was pleasantly surprised how well two formats worked and have been combined lovingly with the 5 stories of Poe presented with the respect they deserve by the different artists tasked with interpreting them.

I think it will be appreciated more by those who are fans of manga and graphic novels, hopefully introducing Poe to them for the first time and creating new fans of such an influential writer.

As for fans of Edgar Allan Poe like me, it just encouraged me to go back and read the stories again after such a long time.

Basically, a win for all readers.

"Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe" is a manga adaptation of five of Edgar Allan Poe's stories (and poem): "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Raven", "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" (you have to wonder why those and not others maybe better suited for a manga adaptation). And the result, even if far of a tragedy, is a middling effort that leaves the reader with a strange aftertaste, because you will feel the ingredients for a great work were here, but the mixing and the cooking were a disgrace.

Let's start with the stories: they are short and to the point, with darkness, a Gothic and beautiful atmosphere and dark instincts. No criticisms here. But the adaptation does little to enhance Poe's words; quite the opposite, with so many bubbles of description and narration and no interaction between them and the drawings, it detaches the reader from the work they have in front of their eyes. Stories that should bring a shudder and make the heart beat fast, end up being boring, cold, and repetitive.

It doesn't help that the drawing style, even if beautiful, seems too cute for these kind of stories. All the characters are too clean, too handsome, too infantile, for the stories, and make the stark contrast between text and art more accentuated.

Not a horrible manga. But it could have been so much more (for starters, alive).

Holding five of Poe’s stories—The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Masque of Red Death—this rendering of his classics is impressive, to say the least. Of the five, I’d only read The Raven, and that was for school. And I didn’t really get what on earth was going on. (I tend to have more trouble interpreting poems than I do stories.) Manga Classic’s version of the tale not only brought The Raven to life, but also helped me understand what on earth it was about.
The rest of Poe’s stories were easy to understand. And also were very creepy. I don’t ever read horror, as it’s not my thing, but knowing a bit about Edgar Allen Poe’s life helped me understand why his stories were so dark. Living a life of tragedy and scorn, Poe probably poured his emotions into his stories and poems, giving them life, if not emotion.
Of the five, I’d have to say that The Masque of Red Death is the one that caught my attention the most. It was interesting how he painstakingly described the seven rooms of the house, and how each one was filled with a different color. I would call this one borderline fantasy, because of the fantastic air that permeates it. I was somewhat disappointed with how it ended and was hoping there would be more to the story. But, alas, we can’t always have what we want.
Once again, the artwork was lovely and, at times, mysterious, lending an air of mystery and darkness to Poe’s stories. To be honest, I don’t know what rating to give this one, as while the stories were kinda creepy and kinda weird, they are also the kind of stories that are going to stick with me forever. So, I’ll give this one a good, even rating.

NOTE: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley for review purposes only. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you like Edgar Allen Poe stories then you will like this. It really combined two of my favorite things: manga and Edgar Allen Poe. The stories come through nicely in this format and are just as spooky as before. I highly recommend this to fans of Edgar Allen Poe or just creepy stories in general. Very good collection.

Does not let me open this file. Was looking forward to it as I love Edgar Allen Poe's works :(

Please when offering a work make sure that it is accessible to the public if agreed for the person to read this for a review.
I'm unable to review it now. Which is the only reason why I gave it 1 star.

Thank you to NetGalley and UDON Entertainment for gifting an ebook copy of Edgar Allan Poe, manga classics, in exchange for an honest review.

I have loved Edgar Allan Poe since high school. I have read and reread his stories numerous times. However, this is the first time I had seen his stories shared in a graphic novel, and I have to say that I love it! The graphics are stunning and tell so much of the story on their own. You can actually see the facial expressions and actions that coincide with the story, rather than picturing them in your mind.
I have only recently found myself interested in reading graphic novels and manga’s, and I have enjoyed reading stories in these different formats. The graphics add a dimension to the story that I now crave. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the writing of Edgar Allan Poe and art, because this is a work of art.

FBRC REVIEW :

This is another one of the Classic that I have yet to read in its original format. I have been wanting to but was intimidated by the prospect of it, so I put it off. Here I am reading the Manga version of it before the original work because I am thinking it will be easier to read and if I like it then I might pick the book later on. This book definitely has the creepy, horror and macabre vibes spot on. I liked the short stories individually and I have some favorites from it as well. The chances of me reading the original book is definitely a priority as with the other classics I need to get to.

The stories were dark, creepy, terror-inducing and had the gothic setting making the readers feel eerie and creeped out at the same time. I feel the need to check out the colored version as I am only getting the arcs that are black and white. I believe the effect of the colored ones would be even more amazing. I enjoyed the stories and the way it's written to bring forward feelings in the reader is fascinating. The stories were very well done with the pictures and scenes helping us follow the story. The gothic aspect and the dark, eery vibe stays and has a bigger presence in the stories.

My favorite of these would be The tell-tale heart, The Raven and The Masque of red death. I loved the other two as well. The stories are going to be staying in my mind for a long time and I am sure the madness, the frenzy and paranoia of these characters with the imagery is a great way of giving a lasting impression to the readers. I absolutely loved the haunting, sometimes, supernatural aspect to the stories. I adore the trivia gems that part of this brilliant book and it is always one of the things I look forward to in these editions. I am giving this book 4.5 stars as well with the chances of getting it bumped to 5 stars after I read the original. I highly recommend checking the classic edition of Manga if you are a fan of the manga format and have a love for the classics stories. Definitely check them out.
