This was the first Manga Classics I’ve read, and I enjoying reading Edgar Allan Poe and have also taught several of his stories.

I thought this was well done. I liked that it kept the wording. I think that the images would help people to understand his fantastic stories. I was afraid the images might be cheesy horror, but they weren’t. I’d definitely recommend it to horror manga fans and those looks to make Poe a little more readable or even just fans of classics who are open to adaptations. I’m definitely interested in checking out other Manga Classics now.

Although it theory, it may seem the art style and text could be a mismatch, in execution, the illustrations with original text raise these stories to a different level. The detailed facial expressions that accompany the more emotionally-tense pages elevate the work and will help readers of all ages connect more fully to the often-overwhelming original words. I look forward to adding this to my high school collection!

This whole series is a great idea. Marrying the familiar manga style with some of the greatest English-language literature carves out a space for those who may have been too intimidated to tackle “the canon”. With Poe in particular, the illustrations add another layer of creepiness that makes the terror come alive for the reader.

I am a big fan of the manga classics editions and I was really excited to see they decided to do Poe. I was definitely interested in what they were going to do with the stories they chose to depict. The overall tone was perfectly eery and definitely made me feel unsettled.
In particular I liked the Masque of the Red Death. The illustrations in that one really felt like it brought the age old story back to life. All of the stories were great though! I can not wait to see more of the manga classics.

Edgar Allen Poe is a fascinating author who's name is synonymous with Horror and Mystery. After reading Mindy McGinnis' The Initial Insult recently, I wanted to revisit some of Poe's works, so I'm glad I was able to review this copy of five of his most popular.

This collection contains The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Fall of the House of Usher. The stories are beautifully rendered in manga format, making them appealing to those who might otherwise balk at reading Poe's words as is. While the text sticks to Poe's wording (i.e. it doesn't update or "modernize" the text), the beautiful artwork accompanying it will add additional meaning for modern day readers and perhaps allow them to get lost in Poe's work more so than they would just reading the text alone.

Of the five stories, the Fall of the House of Usher was probably my least favorite. It was the one I was the least familiar with and while it seems to be faithful to the source from what I've seen, it is also the longest chapter of the book. Most of the other chapters were pretty short (~30 pages or so). It makes them a quick read. I think my favorite was probably The Cask of Amontillado. This may be because this was the story The Initial Insult was most based on and that's the reason I sought out Poe's work, but that story and The Tell-Tale Heart held the most horror for me. My only other fault with this is that The Masque of the Red Death would have benefitted from having color panels. The rooms are all different colors and there's a shot where there is meant to be a layout of the colors all together, but when it's rendered in black and white, many of them look the same. The same can be said of the panels showing different rooms in quick succession. The only way I knew it was different was one room had plants and the text told me they went to another room. The color is important to the story, especially the Black room with the red windows to understand the unease this room gives off, so I would have liked to see those rendered with the colors intact.

Overall, I think most Poe fans will be pleased with this new way to experience his work and I think new or younger fans may find this a nice gateway to his work.

Another great Manga Classic. I read this following my reading of the complete stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe, and was enchanted by the skilful artwork. Very well done, thank you!

This was a great visual retelling of the classic stories by Edgar Allan Poe! This manga made reading the classics more comprehensible, I would highly recommend this for younger readers who might be intimidated by the more difficult writing of the original, or for students who did not read Poe's stories in time for their final :) I felt the target audience for this book was a little younger than I am, and therefore I did not enjoy it as much, but I definitely see the potential.

I love edgar allen poe but this manga wasn’t for me. I would recommend this to anyone who has a hard time reading or getting into poe’s work. I feel that because I’ve already read his work and visualized it i had a hard time enjoying this.

I volunteered to read this book. The artwork is great. It is well written. This graphic novel is well crafted. The illustrations are very good. It makes you feel as though you are in the scene with the characters. It is in stores now for $37.50 (CAD). I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

The manga managed to keep the dark tone of these stories - with the black and white and the amazing artwork, and I applaud you very much for that!

I really, really liked this manga edition of the selected works of Edgar Allen Poe. It is such an excellent introduction into Poe’s most well known works such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Masque of Red Death, Nevermore, House of Usher, etc. The manga format works really well to familiarize new readers to these classic stories, substituting much of the bulkier narrative into images while still keeping some of the original text and dialogue.

The manga artwork is in black and white, with splashes of color highlighting certain motifs for emphasis. The stark illustrations sharply bring to focus the character’s facial expressions mimicking western noir or classic horror manga like <i>Blood on the Tracks</i>. The light, shadows, and contrasts perfectly capture the Gothic element of the stories. I especially loved the “Tell Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” in the way they show the villains slowly shed the mask of civility to show the darkness within. It’s spine tingling-ly delicious!

The manga format also works really well to build suspense, the pacing of the panels infuses the characters uneasiness onto the reader. This was especially effective in “The Masque of the Red Death” with the character’s paranoia bleeding out of the story.

All in all, I really liked this manga collection of Poe’s greatest hits. It is one of the better adaptations. The manga format works really well to create the Gothic atmosphere apropos of these stories. The addition of the original text really added gravitas to the collection bringing Poe’s stories to life in a way that was really fun to read. I certainly hope it would motivate other new readers to check out more of Edgar Allen Poe’s works.

I've been trying to work my way though the Manga Classics as a way to dip my toes into classics without fully committing. This was one of them I figured if I liked the manga of the books then I would be interested in the book it was inspired by. This book was unfortunately not the case. I couldn't get into it unfortunately. I loved the art style but the stories was just not something I was enjoying. I had to force myself to keep going for the sake of getting the arc of this and after finishing I can't say I liked it.

THIS was a very good manga! It was more than delightful to see some of my all-time favorite pieces of Edgar Allan Poe's brought to life in the beautiful artwork that is contained in this book.

I love these manga classics as much as I love chocolate and my cat!
And that mean VERY much.
As always, the manga was based exactly on the original Stories and to tip it all of, was beautifully drawn!
Never seen perfection? Read these if you're a fan of classics as well as manga, because they literally are.

I'm actually new to Edgar Allen Poe so I was quite curious to read this. Man, it didn't disappoint. I'm a huge manga fan so I liked the format a lot. The illustrations were perfect according to the stories. It depicts some of his most popular short stories. I liked it and can't wait to read more of EAP.

While I am a huge fan of EA Poe and his poems, his short stories tend to be hit or miss for me.
This format made me enjoy even his stories that I previously read and disliked ( like The Cask of Amontillado).
My favorite was The Tell-Tale heart because art did amazing job of showing the atmosphere and setting the tone for the story. Also, even though I didn't like the story that much, art for The Masque of the Red Death was outstanding.
I think this is a great way to try out EA Poe and see if you like his style of writing and even if you don't the visual part will make it a well worth read.
