Eerie, atmospheric and haunting, The Forgotten Room had me up til all hours (in a mildly terrified, good way). Maura is a relatable, likeable protagonist, with a realistic outlook on life - and when she takes a job at Essen Grange she almost immediately wishes she hadn't. The characters Maura meets are more Addams Family than happy family, and the house is full of mystery and hidden secrets. Ann Troup writes beautifully, creating an addictive story with a sinister undertone throughout. A first-class page turner.

Maura has been suffering from a deep depression which she is looking to put behind her. In her haste to do so, she accepts a nursing position at Essen Grange caring for Gordon Henderson. Prior to her arrival, a body is discovered on the property, which used to be owned by the Henderson family. Strange things start happening before she even gets inside the doors of Essen Grange. In addition to the weird house and the murders that follow, Maura is haunted by her past. DC Poole, whom she only met once previously, has been assigned to the case. While they had only met that one time, it was not under good circumstances and his presence was unsettling to her. Almost as unsettling as the house she was working within. This book has many twists. So many so you will lose count. Very enjoyable read. Read in two sittings over a 12-hour timeframe. It was hard to put down, but at 1:00 am, this reader needed sleep. Solid 4 star rating!

Nurse Maura is called to provide care for an elderly man in a large home. Seems simple enough. However, the house and the people in it are not what they appear to be. From missing persons to dead bodies, the sinister vibe surrounding the house quickly takes hold of Maura and all those involved with the house.

I really enjoyed this book. It started with what appeared to be a possibly haunted house or family and quickly grew into a murder mystery as the body count grew. The book then transformed into more of a crime story as we followed law enforcement in trying to solve the case.

My only real complaint for this book was that there was so much going on it seemed a bit hard to follow at times. I never suspected the killer even when they were introduced to the story line. Some of the story line felt a bit rushed like we were being pushed towards an ending. However, it never failed to keep my attention and I stayed up late to finish it.

All in all a good book and a unique story.
