Griping, chilling, unforgettable! . In a post 911 like crisis, life isn't all that it seems. Full of intrigue, deception, and suspense McKenzie slays it. Leaving the reader shocked, surprised, and very unsettled. Lies and more lies. Who do you believe when almost every character is unreliable and deception lurks around every corner. A brilliant and intense read!

Man, I really really loved McKenzie's first books that leaned more towards chick-lit. Unfortunately for me I found this book to be just okay. Most of the secrets were easy to see from a mile away and I just didn't feel like the plot had a lot of substance to it. I know many will disagree with me on that but for a general woman's literature book, I need more to make me rate it above average...more drama, more suspense, more endearing characteristics, etc. I liked this book okay but wouldn't recommend it to my friends. I've loved McKenzie's earlier work but with each new book I'm liking things a little less and less so I'm not sure if I'll keep reading her books.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Catherine McKenzie can suck you into her story so well. Her characters are always interesting. This story how an unbelievably relatable feel to it. It centers around an explosion in a Chicago building. We first meet Cecily who lost her husband and best friend. Thanks to journalist and photographer Teo, she became the face of the tragedy. We also meet Fanny. She claims her biological mother died in the explosion, but her story is a little crazy. So many twists, secrets and suspense. The ending was so cleverly done. Outstanding read from beginning to end.

Netgalley granted me a digital copy of this novel, for which I’m very grateful. At 10 a.m. on October 10, an explosion ripped through a Chicago office building killing hundreds. In the disaster, labeled Triple Ten, Cecily lost her husband and best friend. A year later, she’s still the poster child for the tragedy. Three women tell their stories of lies and deceits in alternating chapters. McKenzie has done it again, crafted a read so compelling, it’s hard to cook dinner and do the laundry. This author knows how to plot twists you don’t expect, yet wrap it all up nicely with a decorative bow at the end. Be sure to put this on your to-read list.

Thank You to Amazon Publishing/Lake Union Publishing for the E-ARC of this book for free, in exchange of an Honest review.

I have previously reviewed Catherine's books Fractured, and The Murder Club, and they were both so good. So when I saw she was writing another book, and that it was up on Netgalley, I had to request it immediately.

This was even better than the previous books I have read. I love Catherine McKenzie's writing style and the twists and turns she puts into her books, it's not just one or two of them, they are placed throughout the book. Which makes for an enthralling read, one that could be considered unputdownable.

Three woman, all  so completely different. I loved one of them, hated one, and the other I just couldn't understand. (If there was one complaint I have, it's that I wish I knew why, she was the way she was. There really isn't much back-story to her. So I didn't get why she felt the way she did, and why she made certain life choices).

When it comes to the ending of the book, I felt it was done well. It did however leave off on a little cliffhanger, which makes me think sequel?

Have you read any Catherine McKenzie books? If so, which one was your favorite?

Engaging from the start. Timely and emotional considering there are so many "disasters" in our world today. Catherine McKenzie weaves a compelling tale of family, friendship, and the aftermath of disaster.

A wonderful ten star novel with elements of mystery, suspense, love, and betrayal.
It is the story of two women who survive a 911 type explosion in a Chicago office building. The impact is strong, as it deeply affects both the women and their families.
The story has many threads beautifully balanced by skilled writing leading to an unexpected conclusion. There are lies and liars on every level of this story, not just the obvious. A perfect book and title!

"...a woman running away from a tragedy, a woman running toward the same tragedy, and one stuck in the middle of it." This is The Good Liar in the author's own words. Another great read by Catherine McKenzie. All three women have a story to tell. There's an underlying sense of foreboding throughout the book, even though the catalyst is tragic enough. The pieces start falling into place and you think you're getting a handle on it all, but then there's another 1/3 of a book left! There's more to read, trust me.
This is the kind of book that you read again just to see if you missed anything the first time, to see if you can pick up on the subtle clues now that you know the end. Good stuff.

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is probably my least favorite of this authors books. I LOVE her books! The beginning was very confusing (at least to me). Althought not a favorite, it was a good read and gets you thinking; could this really happen and work for someone. The title makes complete sense in the end; she was good!

3.5 stars / 5

I'm a fan of Ms Mckenzie's and have read all her novels. Although not one of my favourites, this is still a good mystery story. Unlike some of her other books though, I found this one somewhat slow and a bit predictable at times . I did enjoy the different perspectives the story was told from and the overall plot.

I’ve been a fan of author Catherine McKenzie since her first book and she just gets better and better. Her books have gotten more thrilling and intense and its fun to see an author grow in her work. Great job, Catherine!

Now she has a new page-turner called The Good Liar.

Here’s what you need to know:

Can you hide a secret with the whole world watching?

When an explosion rips apart a Chicago building, the lives of three women are forever altered.

A year later, Cecily is in mourning. She was supposed to be in the building that day. Instead, she stood on the street and witnessed it going down, with her husband and best friend inside. Kate, now living thousands of miles away, fled the disaster and is hoping that her past won’t catch up with her. And Franny, a young woman in search of her birth mother, watched the horror unfold on the morning news, knowing that the woman she was so desperate to reconnect with was in the building.

Now, despite the marks left by the tragedy, they all seem safe. But as its anniversary dominates the media, the memories of that terrifying morning become dangerous triggers. All these women are guarding important secrets. Just how far will they go to keep them?

Oh MY what a ride!!

This is my second read by Catherine McKenzie and man did I enjoy this book! First, let me just comment on the cover. So gorgeous!!

This one is a twisty and edgy story about secrets, lies, and betrayal that come to life surrounding the lives of three women that are connected. On October 10th at 10 am a building exploded that killed over 500 hundred people. Let's spring forward a year and "Triple Ten" is all over the media being remembered again.
The Good Liar is a strong character driven novel about three women Cecily, Franny, and Kaitlyn that have been impacted in different ways from the Triple Ten tragedy. The story is told alternating from the three women's perspectives and each story is slowly unfolded at the seams. But, it's never that simple is it? Who is telling the truth?! Who is possibly the "good liar?"
McKenzie does a fantastic job with her characterization. Her previous novel, Fractured, I thoroughly enjoyed and once again her skills/depth of writing is just flawless in this one.

Compulsive, addicting, twists, turns, drama.... what more can you ask for?! And, just how I like my novels... that last little twist McKenzie sprinkled on the top of the cupcake was AHHHHMAZZZING.

Pre-order this one ladies and gents! I promise you will not be disappointed. Highly highly recommend this addicting novel.

4.5 stars!! :)

Thank you so much to Netgalley, Catherine McKenzie, and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced arc in exchange for a honest review.

I received an advanced review copy of this book from The Great Thoughts Ninja Review Team. All opinions are my own. This book started as a sparkler for me just sizzling along until it exploded like an M80 taking off so fast I had to scramble to keep up with it. It's breathtaking. It's unputdownable. You will loose chunks of time like I did. I would read for a while then look up see the time and realize that I almost forgot to feed the dogs. It deserves a lot more than five stars. Happy reading.

Like a tantalizing gourmet meal, Catherine McKenzie blends the ingredients of her story, The Good Liar, into a delectable treat! The book centers on two storylines revolving around a catastrophic event that occurred one year ago. Each character’s story is divinely woven until they masterfully collide with a pop of flavor! Readers will enjoy distinguishing between which of the main characters plays best at the role of “the good liar.”

In the aftermath of a terrible tragedy, the lives of three women change forever. In one sense their individual lives unravel; in another sense their lives become entwined.
Not all of the characters are likable, and not all of them do likable things, but nevertheless we are drawn to find out what happens next - and there are many twists along the way.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.

It’s been a year since an explosion rocked a Chicago building killing more than 500 people on Oct 10 at 10 AM. Now, Teo is working on a documentary to bring to light the affect the explosion had on the lives of the family members of the victims. Cecelia lost her husband Tom but barely survived herself. She is trying to do what’s best for her family but is thrown into the limelight because of a picture of her taken by Teo on the day of explosion that went viral. She is trying to use this fame to bring positivity to other people’s lives and help them get compensation. Kaitlin is trying to build a new life for herself in Canada but is unable to escape the memories of her last. Franny is trying to reconcile finally meeting her biological mom with the fact that she died soon after in the explosion. The story follows these three women in how they are handling the aftermath of the tragedy and slowly, we begin to see the secrets unfold.

None of the three women are your typical heroines. They have their flaws which got on my nerves quite a bit but they also have their redeeming qualities. That’s why these women seem quite real. The writing is very fast paced and I almost finished the book in a single setting. It was kinda easy to guess the ending (or the beginning), which I did halfway through the book, but the why of it was very unexpected. I really couldn’t believe the events that unfolded in the last third of the book. And what can I say about the epilogue; it was EXPLOSIVE!!!! And then the book was over….. I really longed for a little bit more; just enough to know what happened to the characters next. This is a wonderful mystery for all like-minded readers and I can assure you, it will not disappoint you.

The Good Liar is another great thrill read by Catherine McKenzie. Given the nature of the book, it's hard to summarize the plot without giving away too many spoilers.

On October 10th at 10am, there is a large explosion in an office building in Chicago. Over 500 people are killed and this novel takes a look at the lives of 3 women who were impacted by the tragedy. Throughout the novel, we find that their stories are woven together. At the end of each Part, a critical element of their relationships is revealed. You must read all the way to the end of the Epilogue to get that last nagging question answered. I enjoyed this book, because the twists that I thought I had figured out were not as they appeared. The book weaves in familiar scenery in Chicago and Montreal. I have enjoyed all of Ms. McKenzie's novels, and this is no exception.

I received this as an Advanced Reader Copy via NetGalley, and I've pre-ordered it to ensure it is on my personal bookshelf.
