This story was cleverly written and so engrossing that I read the first half so quick.

I needed to know the secrets Helena was dying to share.
There’s a twist in here that had me gasping and laughing, it was a great scene.

It’s not a romantic story and it's very emotional to read. You feel her pain and despair and you can’t help but be heartbroken for her.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

Have you ever read a book and be so floored by it that words just escape you? See the talent of the author and how they spread their wings and do it so eloquently that you are in awe?

The Ghostwriter by Alessandra Torre did this for me. I have been reading Alessandra since she wrote the delicious Brad DeLuca and was riveted by Deanna Madden in the Girl in 6E which began to show us the depth of Ms. Torre’s writing skills but here we see her skills be brought to a new level. If you are looking for the deliciousness of a Brad DeLuca this is not the Alessandra Torre book for you. This book is more real and dark. It rivets you from the moment you begin the prologue and doesn’t let you out of its web until the end where you are just in shock and awe at what you read. It isn’t a bad shock and awe mind you for Torre brings you into another level of her amazing writing and mind. Where she takes on some heady topic and doesn’t sugar coat it but hits it head on. I feel like I stepped back into the movie The Ghostwriter with the reporter, mystery of death and the darkness that is there lurking.

Helen Rossa is a character that is rough around the edges. Always one who was rigid and precise but so so talented. And not a character you expect to like. But as she slowly is unraveled before you you see what has shaped her and Torre does this brilliantly. We see how she became who she is and what is driving her. You watch her grow as a character as does Mark. And no they don’t grow together but in maturity and depth.

Torre has written a complex story that is mature and has characters with depth and feeling even when you don’t think it. She draws you into this world and caresses you with hints of the darkness lurking and tantalizes you with the story of Helen now and than. With what shaped her, how she became the way she is but also the things she is learning now with the help of Mark and her editor. She grows and finds peace as she faces her own mortality and guilt that has weighed her down and taken over her life.

The story is eloquent in how it is written and yet is dark in its undertone. Not dark like thriller dark but dark in the foreboding and what has happened to create the Helen of today. It is real and complex. Riveting and captivating and just addictive as you delve into who helen is and what has weighed her down and she needs to be free of. As Helen releases her burdens and ferociously lets the truth come out and finds peace you see that the layers to this woman and her life are so compelling and sad. Torre does an excellent job in just drawing you into this story that is a need for the character to occur. She propels you forward and keeps you wanting to learn the truth until the last word is written and you are wrung dry from the emotion the story evokes and awe from the growth and beauty of Torre’s writing and scope of talent.

Helena Ross is a successful author living with a secret. Even though Helena writes relatable characters, she has struggled with establishing connections and guards her essence with certain rules. For the past four years, Helena’s choices further compounded her need for a solitary existence. After receiving news of her terminal illness she decides to tell her story and learns the value of honesty, acceptance and friendship.

“Once I write her story, she will be real, she will be exposed, dead to edits but open to everyone’s eyes.”

Over the next three months, Helena shares her story in what will be the last book of her career. Along the way, Helena’s defenses become penetrable and her perspective seems to slightly shift. While this occurs, the inevitable is looming and the tension of Helena’s secret mounts.

“How can a person know what they can handle if they aren’t challenged by life?”

Told in multiple POVs, Helena’s words set the landscape of a grim narrative about a neglected attempt at marriage, motherhood and other successive failures. With a strong secondary cast supporting the pacing of Helena’s biopic, they add dimension to the tragedies but also breakthrough moments underscoring the gravity of Helena’s loss of time and misdirected behavior.

As the story unfolds, the pacing is fairly measured with questions being raised at different intervals in search of the ultimate answer with a twisty revelation. While Helena doesn’t make it easy to like her, she does have relatable emotions, especially those that make her question how to assimilate or experience a sense of normalcy. Of course, her deepest regret is eroding what’s left of her emotional and physical strength.

Knowing this book is Alessandra Torre’s first foray into the non-romance genre, it is a worthy effort showcasing her stylistically recognizable prose. Though I was expecting a deeper connection with the protagonist and felt some plot points needed further introspection, the story held my interest and I empathized with the reality of her predicament.

Steeped in contemporary fiction with elements of suspense The Ghostwriter is a book about sacrifice, loss, and acceptance.

Alessandra Torre has a winner with the Ghostwriter. The plot feels fresh, the writing is evocative and the characters, especially Helena Ross, quickly come into sharp focus.  Full review at dailywaffle.com. 4 stars.

Alessandra Torre is one of those authors I constantly mean to pick up. A handful of her books have appealed to me, begging to be read. In particular, The Girl in 6E, written as A.R. Torre, really appeals to me – it’s a book that has sat on my to-read list for far too long. I’m not sure what it is about The Ghostwriter that resulted in it being my first Alessandra Torre read, but I know it will not be my last.

As this is my first Alessandra Torre read, I cannot compare it to the author’s prior work as many fans can. I can just use word of mouth to express how it is different. It is not a romance like the author’s other work. It is contemporary fiction but focuses more upon the suspense than other elements the author usually focuses upon. I could go on about the things that are supposed to be different, but it really doesn’t mean much coming from me. All I can do is explain why I enjoyed this one so much, and why I’m more than happy to read more of the author’s work.

From the get-go, the synopsis of this one intrigued me. An author with a dark secret, writing a book to let out the truth. I was intrigued. I wanted to know more. My mind instantly came up with many possibilities, and so many ideas filled my mind. As ever when a range of emotions filled my mind, I wasn’t at all sure what this book would actually give me. It would give me something interesting, a fact I was sure about, but I wasn’t quite sure what the specifics would be.

From the very first page, I was pulled into the story. I was intrigued by the characters, interested by the events, and curious about the truth. There was plenty in this book to keep me reading. I came to enjoy the characters so much – enjoying their idiosyncrasies, enjoying their attitudes, and enjoying the way they played off each other. I really did come to love the characters, constantly wanting more. They were wonderful characters to put into the events that played out, seemingly simple things that had a huge impact.

Throughout, the undercurrent of mystery kept me second-guessing. I love a good suspense novel; I adore books that leave you unsure about the specific details. I really enjoyed the way everything in this one came together – I will not give specifics, don’t worry – finding it to be a wonderful blend of so many things. There was darkness to it, real emotion, and all the necessary elements to ensure a person connects with the story. The specifics were unexpected, revealed to us at the very last second. I usually prefer it when little hints are dropped throughout the story to allow us to guess what the details are, but I found I really enjoyed how this one prevented us from making those guesses. We knew there was something, but we could not say what until the details had been handed over to us. It certainly kept me guessing, and I loved the way it held my attention.

Despite being an emotional hit at the end of the book, I do feel as though things were a bit sudden. I understand why it ended the way it did, but I had expected something… more, I guess. I wasn’t expecting a happily ever after, we all knew how it was going to end, but I did feel as though it wasn’t quite the punch I had hoped for. Just before the end we get the big reveal, and then things taper off ever so slightly – I believe this is simply a reflection of my preferences with suspense novels, though.

Overall, I loved this one. It was a brilliant introduction to the author’s work and I’m certainly going to be reading more in the future. In fact, reading this one has left me annoyed for having failed to pick up an Alessandra Torre book sooner.

Go into The Ghostwriter with an open mind. Forget anything that you have ever read by Alessandra Torre before. Be ready for a journey and revelations that will captivate and astound you. It will tear you to pieces and quietly put you back together again. You will cry, you will laugh, you will be stunned on several occasions. It will all be worth it in the end.

Be prepared to have your heart twisted into knots. You'll want to hate Helena, then pity her and finally connect with her broken spirit. I found this story the best of the year and will take a long while to get over. As a successful author she needs to have her story told but is too weak to write it, asking for a ghostwriter was her only option. Helena Ross wants her readers to know about her married life, her beautiful daughter Bethany and the events that changed their world forever. This was my first Torre book and I'm anxious to get to another. I requested a copy from Netgalley and never thought I'd be selected, but I was thrilled to receive a copy. My review was written voluntarily with the hopes you will grab this book and dive in.

I'm completely blown away by this one. I love Alessandra Torre and wow this one is amazing. So many emotions are stirred up while reading The Ghostwriter. At this point I'm a sobbing mess. It's beautiful and yet heart wrenching all at the same time. This is a book that will take you on such an emotional journey that you can't help but scream and cry and just want to hug Helena tight. You feel her anguish, her grief, her acceptance and most of all peace. Helena is making amends not only with herself but with Kate, Mark (Marka) and to an extent in her own way with her mother. It is a beautiful sight to see writing enemies come together. That's what Mark aka Marka and Helena do. They needed each other one to push to be better and the other a means to an end. Be prepared to have box of Kleenex on hand because you are so going to need it. These words have touched me in such a way I never knew I needed. I am still in awe of the power The Ghostwriter has. This has to be one of the best books of 2017 yet. If I could give it more stars I would. A MUST READ.

5++++ It's Unthinkable Stars!!!!

I'm a huge fan of Alessandra Torre and when I saw the synopsis for this book it took me a little by surprise because it's definitely NOT like anything she's written in the past. But I was VERY intrigued and knew that I MUST read this book. I thought I knew what I was going to get when this landed on my kindle. I've read plenty of suspense/thriller books and I can unequivocally say this is the most emotionally turbulent books I've EVER read!!!

If you've read the synopsis you know basically what this book is about. This book is so much more than it seems at the surface. There are several shocking moments that will literally have your mouth hanging open, there will be tears and plenty of them. If you're like me, there will also be anger and frustration, first toward one person but then it'll switch focus to another person altogether.

I had moments that I didn't think I could go on and I had to physically put my kindle down. I also had a warm spot in my heart for a few of the secondary characters because no matter how difficult it seemed it would be, they didn't listen and did what they wanted to do anyway, and in this instance, it was absolutely the right way to go.

Yes, I'm being very vague, but this is necessary because I don't want to give any spoilers as that would ruin the entire experience for you. I'll leave you with this.... Ms. Torre has written a book that is poignant and moving creating a cavalcade of visceral reactions in me both as a person and a woman. This book is in my Top 5 for 2017 and is a book that I will recommend to all my friends and family because it's just that good!!!

Top Rec | 6 Stars

In what might be (read: is) her most gripping novel yet, Alessandra Torre departs from her normal genre with soulful ease and sinks her teeth into a fleshy, heartbreaking tale of a dying novelist whose last wish is to write her confession in The Ghostwriter. What follows is a harrowing tale of regret, grief, and closure, both ironic and bittersweet. Sweepingly poetic and haunting, it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat as it builds and builds with its stark vividness.

Employing the use of a hardened protagonist, one who is both easy to understand and love (most especially because she admits to things most women/mothers wouldn’t dare to utter but have thought), Torre gives us a complex, unique heroine to root for; one that has an unwavering strength and a staunch eye forward. Her flaws are glaring, widely open to criticism, but there’s an ease with which it is to love this unlovable woman. This character is unabashed in her past and the decisions she’s made up to this point. And yet, as the story evolves and shapes, both in her confessional book and in the story, slowly she finds herself within the words–she finds her humanity, the humanity of others, and the heart she’s long walled off.

The Ghostwriter is a beautiful, soul-moving story that any woman can find pieces of themselves in. The writing was eloquent, its story bold and consuming. Not many books move me to sob-like tears, but this one snuck up on me and ripped me apart. It will leave you bereft of words, floating within its carefully constructed world, and not knowing if you’ll ever come down from its high. This is Torre at her best, her words their most beguiling and enchanting, all so very remarkable in their job to tell you an unstoppable force of a story.

Turn the page. Turn the page. Turn the page. This was my brain while absorbing the words in The Ghostwriter, Alessandra Torre’s newest release. I was struck by how invested I became in Helena’s world, stuck somewhere between the past and the present, and how quickly I wanted to know more about her life and what brought her to this point.

There are truly only a few characters in the present and the way that Alessandra wrote them is phenomenal, how she can describe these complex characters and make them feel real and like they live down the street is both comforting and unsettling. The way they interacted with Helena to draw her out and bring the story to life was brilliant and made this a book I could not put down.

I won’t give any spoilers, but I will tell you that this is not a romance and while it isn’t a romance, it is all Alessandra Torre. Her writing style, the way she can bring her words to life and have them grip your soul, squeeze your heart, and leave you breathless is remarkable. This is a unique and truly unforgettable story that will have you hooked from the first page. The Ghostwriter is my favorite read of 2017 and I would gladly give it 10 stars.

An amazing read! Helena an author with a unique mind who has come to understand she's dying and it's now time to write her story and reveal the truth behind the death of her husband and daughter, to do this she'll need the help of her nemesis fellow author Marka.
The more you get into Helens's head the more heart broken you'll become and the twist and turns will have you turning pages, this is one not to miss!

This was a really interesting, thought provoking, gripping story. It was a book that was a complete page turner, with lots of intrigue and a huge build up of suspense. It is a mystery, a psychological contemporary piece of fiction.... and it is oh so good!!!

Helena Ross is a best-selling romance author, who decides to 'retire' at 32. This is due to an illness as opposed to choice, but because of that she is determined to write her final book. Her final story and the final truths about her life and the position she has found herself in. But to do that she realises she needs help... Having written romance after romance, this one is a totally different genre...

It is unique, full of twists and surprises... It is about friendship, love (but not in the romance way!!), loyalties, trust and overcoming your fears and getting out the truths!

I loved the characters in this story. Okay, so Helena annoyed me at times, some of the choices she made were questionable, but it worked... I liked the extra PoV's from other characters involved in the story, seeing things from their perspective, cleverly piecing together the whole story. .

There was a slight lull midway, where I felt not enough was being revealed quick enough (maybe I'm just too impatient!!), hence why it' not quite the full 5 stars for me... but...

The ending... when everything is revealed... Heart-breaking, shocking, painful and gut-wrenching. And the epilogue - Perfect!

Alessandra Torre is an extremely talented writer and has just proved how she can write something so totally different, yet it works. Superb!

Bestselling author Helena Ross has been given only three months to live. With her diagnosis she comes to the realization that the book she always knew she would write is now under a very strict deadline.

The story is Helena's truth, her twisted and dark confession and it will be unlike anything she has ever written...

Wow. This book absolutely wrecked me. It was raw, and darkly beautiful. This was written so uniquely, with the story spinning as Helena's book is being completed, it was categorically captivating.

I can't write much more of a review without spoiling any of the book. This book is not romance, it's completely different and worth the genre change if you rarely diverge in your book choices. The writing is fantastic, the story a suspenseful, dark and twisted tale... and at the heart of it, the life of a hard-to-love woman and her final reflections on her life...

Thank you to Alessandra Torre who took a chance on this story, I feel it deserves more than just the 5 star maximum that I can rate it at...

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.

A book full of twists and secrets! I knew that this book was going to be different from the usual ones from Alessandra Torre. The author herself mentions that this book has no romance, but there are tibits of it in the story.

Helena, an acclaimed author is suffering from the c-illeness. Having only few months to live, she decides to write one last book, where she confesses her darkest secrets. For the sake of not spoiling this book may be dark, but it's addicting, has many plot twists and surprises, and you really can't put it down!

It's really gritty and dark, but it proves that Alessandra Torre can write beyond the romance genre! Definitely a good read for October! ;)

The story of Helena Ross, a bestselling Romance writer. Helena is a talented novelist, an ardent lover of words, gripping plots and unusual characters. She is also extremely bossy, cranky, impulsive and impatient. Writing has always been her priority. She was so busy in her “author world” that when she fell in love with Simon, she only believed what Simon made him believe. She was head-over-heels for this guy who appeared so perfect. She couldn’t imagine any other man give her what Simon gave- love, stability and a beautiful daughter- Bethany.

Helena is an unfit mother, not because she hates her daughter. She loves her more than herself. But her writing gets affected in the process because so much time is invested in ‘childish stuff’. Helena’s perfect life is destroyed by ‘one’ discovery about her husband, Simon. A secret that was both brutal and unforgivable. Her maternal instincts kick in and she is ready to do all it takes to save Bethany from Simon. But fate had other plans.

Was there a Happily Ever After?I told you early on in this book, the chances of that.

Helena’s perfect life is destroyed by a strange discovery about her husband, Simon. A secret that was both brutal and unforgivable. Her maternal instincts kick in and she is ready to do all it takes to save Bethany from Simon. But fate had other plans.

Mark Fortune- the ghostwriter in the story is the one who Helena chooses to write the story of her life. A story full of obsessions, remorse, and grief. But will Mark be able to re-create Helena’s emotions and feelings to perfection? Or is Helena the only one who has to give voice to her story?

The plot is great. Behind all the glamour, lies a world of secrets and treachery. The story takes its own sweet time to unfold. A fast-paced, emotional ride. I might have hated Helena throughout the story but it’s the end that actually hurts the most. This is one of the most beautiful endings I have come across. Helena’s character is multidimensional and hence, the reader can judge her all they want.

The end took my heart away and made me forget every flaw the story or the characters might hold. And honestly, this book is such a satisfying read. The emotional turbulence in the reader’s minds is at rest as one reaches the very end. It’s a story that ends gracefully.

4.5 Stars!!

One of Alessandra Torre's best books. Couldn't put it down!! Crisp, concise, fast-paced and enthralling. All of the ingredients for a great read!

"If you lie enough times, no one believes your truth."

This book is Alessandra Torre at her best: no-nonsense, smart and engaging fiction. Helena is a very unlikely heroine, prickly, moody and basically angry at the world. She doesn't want to rely on anyone at all. She even keeps her long-time agent Kate at arm's length.

"On rare days, Kate regrets ever meeting the woman. But on most days, she just wonders about her. They say all geniuses are a little mad. Maybe Helena’s madness just took longer to come out."

But Helena as a story to tell and she doesn't have much time to do it. She sets her sights on one writer, and one writer only, to become her ghostwriter. A competing romance author, Marka writes books that Helena actually despises. But she sees a talent there that would be perfect for her own story.

"What’s happened to me? I have a story that I don’t have time to tell. I have an empty house that reeks of death. I have no friends, no family, and no one to ask for help. I’m dying, and it’s the best thing that has happened to me in a long time."

Alessandra Torre builds the suspense perfectly in this book, all while holding the reader's attention and slowly revealing the terrible secret about Helena's life. This book is also a fascinating glimpse into the lonely life of a writer and the almost obsessive need to get the words out at all costs.

"You can tell them who you are, or what your job in the book was. I don’t mind if they know I’ve had help.”

They. The gods in their world, the eyes on which the axis rotated. The readers. The critics. What would they think?

This is most definitely not a romance but the main characters are both renowned romance writers. Helena's own story begins as a romance but you just know it is NOT going to conclude with a happily ever after.

"Boys like him don’t go for girls like me, they don’t follow me with their eyes, or listen when I speak. They don’t lean closer or want more."

I absolutely loved this book. Once I started I could not put it down. I applaud the author for creating a heroine who is far from loveable yet completely and utterly captivating. No question that astute readers will figure out the terrible secret before the surprising conclusion, but this book is a total winner nonetheless. It is completely original and inventive. I have never read anything like it. Alessandra Torre deserves all the accolades for this one!

"Soon … my final story will come out, and everyone will know the truth.

I just finished this story and I am speechless. I want to say everything and nothing. This story is unlike anything I’ve read before and yet I loved every page. This book is haunting and healing all at the same time.

Helena Ross is, putting it nicely, quirky. When I read her character, I kept thinking of that phrase “zoom out”, because Helena would get so caught up in the details, the little nitpicking of being “right”, that she would miss what was actually happening. She has rules for everything and everyone. As a reader, you find yourself wondering if she might have some type of mental illness or if she’s just a misunderstood genius.

This book isn’t a romance, and it’s not a mystery either. I feel like I would classify it as nonfiction. I don’t even feel like that’s a worthy category either, for a book that pulled out so much emotion from me, and from our characters. Part of me wants to say this story starts out, very briefly, with a happily ever after in the past, and then the story reveals the real truth behind that “love” story.

Helena Ross has terminal cancer and only three months to live. She’s trying to get out her last book, her truth, before she dies. But for someone who normally takes a year to write a book, she needs help. Enter in her ghostwriter.

One factor I enjoyed was that Helena and her ghostwriter actually work together, much to Helena’s disappointment. I appreciated that the author took their partnership that direction because I think when I hear the term “ghostwriter”, I just think of someone else doing the work while someone else is fine being the face of the work. So to see this as a collaboration was unique and I enjoyed it.

Helena’s story goes from her rigidity to watching her progress through her illness to watching her heart open up. The way the author shared these extremely personal and intimate moments in Helena’s life was flawless. I aligned with Helena intensely and while she could be harsh, she also was strong in her convictions. Of course, her character makes mistakes but you realize those are part of her personality.

I loved this book. This is the kind of story that you order in paperback and highlight your heart out because there are so many scenes that will resonate with you. I can confidently say this book is one I will remember and it goes down as one of the best stories I have ever had the honor of reading.

READ: September, 2017
DISCLOSURE: This book was provided as an advanced copy (ARC) via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest opinion/review. *EXTRA thanks and love to the author and her personal assistant for providing this book*
MY RATING (using the 0-5 star scale from www.GoodReads.com): FIVE (5) "the words are what will kill me" stars with a side of "WOW".

AUTHOR SUMMARY ("THE BLURB"):
"•I have three months to write the last book of my life. Three months to confess the details of that day, and how it changed everything for me.
•My name is Helena Ross. I’ve written fifteen romance novels, ten of which have become international bestsellers. But this one isn't a romance, no Happily Ever After in place. This novel holds only the truth, which I have run away from for four years. The truth, which I have hidden from the police, from my loved ones, from the world.
•This final book?
•It's my confession."

MY REMARKS:
Where to begin?! Wow, just wow!
I am not an author and would not try nor pretend to be... I do read, though. A lot. A WHOOOOLE LOT. I am constantly in awe of the talent, creativity, ability, and all of those other amazing characteristics plus all of incredible hard work authors exhibit and apply in weaving tales for our pleasure. "The Ghostwriter" is a perfect example of just how an author might demonstrate those gifts.

Alessandra Torre is definitely one of my most admired and beloved authors; I immediately preorder her works...I cyber stalk her social media accounts for peeks into her world...I eagerly anticipate her next release (every single one of them), and I read everything she makes public - which incidentally, has included a subscription to Cosmo in the past, and the recent new addition of Radish Fiction (a serial reading app) to my electronic devices so I am less likely to miss something Ms. Torre publishes. I was eagerly anticipating this novel and I flipped my sh*! when I received the message that I got to be part of the ARC team...I also thought I knew kinda-sorta what "The Ghostwriter" might be like, you know?

I was WRONG. Excellently, fabulously, awesomely, wrong.

What an AWESOME tale Alessandra has brought us! If one is, like myself, familiar with previous Torre novels, just be aware: the only *kink* in this dramatic story was in my eReader's charging cable! Lol. I could not stop reading...is 'unputdownable' a word? Even if it is not, it still applies. Helena was an addictive, mesmerizing, real person to me and her story stole my breath, my heart.

I am not able to share specifics of this not-quite-released novel, but I just fell in love with our main character (aforementioned Helena), so quickly. I loved that "The Ghostwriter" was a different style for Ms. Torre (as compared to previous work), yet I still easily felt her writing style and "heard" her throughout. I think that is probably our author's heart. I find that so special. I enjoyed feeling so immersed in the unfolding surprises and twists, them stumbling upon a sentence that immediately reminded me "that was Alessandra right there for sure", 99% of the time accompanied by a belly laugh out loud. ..."I shove my...tree of happiness into a wood chipper..." is just one tiny example. I cracked up. I think I picked up a Voss water bottle reference in there, too.

Bottom line:
Read this book. It is fiction. It is dramatic. It is tense, heart shaking, moving, hilarious at times, devastating at others, mesmerizing and WORTH IT. There are not many more adjectives needed, imo, to describe a five-star story than those.

Thank you for the journey with Helena, Marka, Kate, et al., Alessandra.
