The narration is delightful. The author keeps a dose of sincerity and comedy that makes the reader continues to the end of the story. I hope to see the second part of this incredible story.

As a teacher, I found this book to be hilarious. I guess if you're not a teacher, perhaps it's hard to find the humor in it. Anyway, it was a decent read... Not necessarily a book I'd re-read, though.

This book wasn’t for me. I think perhaps the reason why is because I work in a school, admittedly not as a teacher.

The first few pages got off to a bad start as there is no way in a UK school (I realise the book is set in Australia), or at least the one I work in, that a new teacher would be left to fend for himself to the extent the protagonist was. The initial open hostility and lack of support from colleagues really wouldn’t happen (in my humble experience!). This did put me off reading the book, but I persevered, however it did become a bit repetitive and boring, and was not particularly laugh out loud funny.

I initially thought this book was a memoire but believe it is fiction. A bit confusing really. It might have been better to explain this at the beginning rather at the end as you may approach the book from a different point of view.

Also, the title is way, way too long.

It was a bit confusing at the beginning trying to work out whether or not the book was a work of fiction but you do find out in the end. It's fiction.
There are sections which are laugh-out-loud funny funny but they are few and far between disjointed chapters.
Finally, despite the title saying not to tell mum, the mum barely shows up in the book.

me start this by saying I hate writing a ‘bad’ review, but the point of this and me taking my time to read books is to give my honest opinion on them. So with that in mind, this will be relatively short, but do note I would not recommend this book.

Firstly Please “Don't Tell Mum that I Have Become a Government School Teacher - She Thinks I'm Still at Law School” is a very long title that adds nothing to the book.

One thing I found confusing was is it fiction or non-fiction? I was given it as a memoir but upon researching online it states it is a fiction book, the content didn’t help. The book is continually swearing, something no matter the book I don’t like. It never adds anything and it certainly doesn’t in this book.

I found myself getting bored very quickly with the book, it just felt on repeat over and over. A relentless moan about students bad behaviour and the attitude of the staff. The only chapter that was bearable was the final chapters regarding the trips, but it wasn’t worth reading the rest of the book to get there!

If you are looking for an insight into being a teacher, look elsewhere.

Couldn't think at first just what this book reminded me of,, something from a long time ago and then it hit me.... From Sir With Love , the film starring Sidney Poitier and Lulu . It's a heart warming account of a teacher who cares too much about his pupils . I loved it . I found myself dispairing along side almost cheering as the students made progress in their education. I did think at first this book was set in U.S. as the area seemed rough to say the least but it's set in Australia.

Told in short anecdotal form recounting a series of events in the life of a teacher, this book was not one I could read in one sitting. The nature of the stories became a little repetitive after a while. Though entertaining I read the accounts with some disbelief. Could this be real? Could his colleagues be that hardened? Could any headmaster be that disaffected and also ineffective? Perhaps it is just good luck that has led me to be filled with suspicion that this hasn't all been exaggerated for maximum impact. I hope not! Some moments of Hollywood teacher inspiration but even the self deprecation came across rather self-congratulatory at times. Which is a shame because I'm sure that was not how it was intended. Perhaps a book for one less cynical than I! Entertaining but not gripping or particularly new. If you enjoy a blog (the secret teacher etc etc) then perhaps this one is for you.
