The story takes place in North Africa in the 1920s. The cast of characters are so varied, not only from different walks of life but different countries and different ideas for looking to the future. A movie crew from Hollywood has arrived and brings their differences with them. What a shock to those who have this exposure for the first time. A very interesting look at the time and place of the novel.
