Christmas in Kilts is a charmingly romantic set of Scottish based novellas. Evans, McGoldrick, Cornwall and Kent are my go to authors. Their books center around Scotland and Scottish traditions and lore. Brisbin did, too, but she is not an author known to me. Since being included in this group, I am glad to find another talented author to add to my list.

You will find each of these books to be unique and different as each of these authors always are. You will, also, feel as though you are renewing old acquaintances with characters from previous books. These novellas have second chances, loving martyrs, new friendships that become loving couples. Each of the men are men you love to love. Each of their female counterparts are strong women who know their minds and know what they need and do not need. Anytime you put this type of female with a man in a kilt or a Scottish Highlander, you have beautiful HEAs to come. Some of their travels are rocky and heart rending, but that is the specialty of the journey.

This set of novellas will make great Christmas time reading.

Christmas and highlanders…enough said! These stories are all so good. You have second chances at love, longing love, strangers in the night, and a child who loves her aunt. The one downfall, they are too short. I could have read whole novels of each of these couples. So grab your tea and get ready for lots and lots of smiling.

Terri Brisbin – A Highlander’s Hope – This story should come with a warning – tissues needed but in the very best way. A heartwarming story of Robena and Iain. Everyone deserves loves, no matter their age.

Lecia Cornwall – A Highland Christmas Wager – This is a two-for-one romance with sweet and lovable Hugh and equally sweet and loveable Meggie and the other with the happy-go-lucky Charlie and shrewish Catriona. Ahhh, I loved both of their stories. Honestly, I would have loved more of Charlie and Catriona. And boys, stop wagering. It never gets you anywhere with the ladies.

Bronwen Evans – A Scot for Christmas – Spinster with a Cause! Emma is desperately in love with Dougray but he cannot let go of his deceased wife. Emma proposes a scandalous arrangement and Dougray cannot help but give in…men, right, hehe?!? But who knows where love will come next. Lovely story.

Lavinia Kent – Leftover Mistletoe – James and Emma are quite a pair. Foiled in their plans, they have to settle for shelter to weather out the storm. It is nice to see how they each learned something during their stay.

May McGoldrick – Sweet Home Highland Christmas – A wonderful romance that develops over the story. Captain Pennington and Freya are genuinely nice people. Normally I am not a child in the story book lover but Ella is just so precocious and bloody cute.

Christmas in Kilts is a collection of five separate novellas that all center around some sexy highlanders and the woman that win their hearts at Christmas time. Each being novella length they are short but sexy reads to heat up the holidays. The collection includes the following five stories…

A Highlander’s Hope by Terri Brisbin – A determined highlander finds himself in love with a lady of questionable repute after spending time together and seeing just how she lives her life and what she does for others.

A Highland Christmas Wager by Lecia Cornwall – A snowstorm forces a young woman to take shelter with three highlanders where a bet is made for which will win her kisses and her heart.

A Scot for Christmas by Bronwen Evans – A single young woman is ready to hang up her hopes for finding the love of her life and embrace a life of spinsterhood but first she wishes to at least enjoy one night of passion to hold onto in her lonely nights to come.

Leftover Mistletoe by Lavinia Kent – A highlander and a lady find themselves stranded and fending for themselves in a remote cabin where things heat up with a promise of love in the air.

Sweet Home Highlands by May McGoldrick – A young woman is determined to find a husband so that she may keep her young orphaned niece that she loves dearly when the pair happen upon a ship’s captain that both are soon smitten with.

As with most collections there were stories that I did like more than others but in the end I found the entire collection to be a solid sexy holiday historical read that I think romance fans will enjoy.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Scottish Love Stories at Christmas

A Highlander’s Hope by Terri Brisbin 5*
In 1357 Scotland Iain MacKillop, uncle of the chieftain and commander of the MacKillop fighting men, is thinking the unthinkable - taking to wife the village whore! Thought-provoking story with a HEA.

A Highland Christmas Wager by Lecia Cornwall 4*
The year is 1711 and Meggie MacLeod and her grandmother, accompanied by clansman are travelling to Glen Iolair for Christmas. Heavy snow necessitates seeking refuge at Gleanngalla home to Laird MacVane, the man who seduced and abandoned her, eight years before. Magnus MacVane, still as handsome as ever and now widowed takes one look at Meggie and decides he will have her again but the two other visitors, young and unmarried, are also attracted to her, and so an infamous wager between the three men is struck. Hugh MacAulay grew upon me and I enjoyed the way the author wove The Twelve Days of Christmas into the celebrations.

A Scot for Christmas by Bronwen Evans 5*
In 1809 Dougray lost his wife after only two years of marriage but six years later, still heartsore he knows he must do his duty and remarry in order to produce an heir. He is firmly decided on a marriage of convenience which will not affect his heart until Lady Emma, his best friend’s sister, re-enters his life. Lovely story with a courageous heroine.

Leftover Mistletoe by Lavinia Kent 5*
In 1818 Lady Emma Spencer is orphaned and homeless. On her way to her Uncle ‘s home she is robbed by her maid and finds herself on the common stage with a strange man. This however is not the worst of it, the driver abandons the coach, taking the horses and leaving her with said stranger with a snowstorm coming. There is no inn in sight merely an old cottage, how will the two of them fare? Is marriage the only outcome now she has been compromised?

Sweet Home Highlands by May McGoldrick 5*
1817 is the year in which this story is set and five going on twenty five, Ella Dacre steals the show in every scene. She is an orphan being raised by her aunt and grandfather but her wealthy paternal grandmother, who she has never met, suddenly decides to take an interest and wants assurance that her granddaughter‘s future is secure. For Miss Freya Sutherland this means she has no option but to accept her disreputable cousin’s hand in marriage. Once Captain Gregory Pennington meets the little girl and her aunt, he soon decides that such a marriage is unacceptable.

How wonderful to have a bundle of lovely Scottish-Christmas themed romance novellas! This is a delightful collection. I'd not read any of these authors before so this was a great opportunity to explore. What I liked most is that each novella is a little different in tone and outcome- but all of them feature strong Scottish men and equally strong women. There are castles and lairds and ladies and serving people and drama and love and Christmas. Not everyone is young (especially liked that). I read these one at a time, as a tonic almost, to the news outside and to some of my other reading. Thanks to Netgalley for the ArC. This is the perfect book to put on your night table.

This is a collection of novellas that revolve around the Christmas time of year. These are 5 of the best Scottish Regency writers and they didn't disappoint. Many times with novellas, they are either 2nd chance romances or love at first sight. These are almost all love at first sight novellas. I thought for the abbreviated format , they were all well written. You saw the relationship bloom. They each had their tender moments.
My favorite though was the last story by May McGoldrick, "Sweet Home Highlands". It was funny and romantic. Can't wait to see if Eleanor ever gets her own story. Loved her.

What a wonderful collection of short stories. Each book was better than the next. They each had a whirlwind romance with some of the most heated passion ever. The build up of the impending love was timeless in each story. A better culmination of Author’s could not have been made.

This anthology of Scottish-set Christmas romances contains stories by Terri Brisbin, Lecia Cornwall, Bronwen Evans, Lavinia Kent and May McGoldrick.

Take several strong Highlander males and mix them with determined and smart heroines and you get lots of delicious reading. The snow many be swirling and the wind whistling through the Highlands of Scotland but romance is strong within these tales. Heroines range from the village harlot to prickly spinsters while the heroes…they’re men that any reader is sure to fall in love with. The plots aren’t overly complicated, but they propelled this reader onward.

Normally in an anthology, there are one or two stories I don’t care for and skip over, but I devoured this entire offering. The stories in Christmas in Kilts are perfect bite-sized treats to read during the busy run-up to Christmas. If you’re a fan of historical romances, I highly recommend this one.

There's stories I loved, some I like, then one I didn't like at all.
A Highlander's Hope- wasn't my cup of tea at all. I prefer stories that have a confirmed HEA with Everyone happy in the end (except the bad guy) and to me this one just didn't deliver on that. I enjoyed reading it until that point.
A Highlanders Christmas Wager- I really enjoyed. The story gave some background as it went on why the heroine felt the way she did and how she grew past those feelings was fun to watch. Her Grandmother was just the right touch. I loved how this turned out in the end!
A Scot for Christmas - was my favorite in the bunch. I love a strong heroine who knows exactly what she wants and isn't going to stop til she gets it!
Leftover Mistletoe - was a new to me author and I really liked her story. I normally don't like what I would consider a weak heroine, but this one was truly likeable and sweet in that she wasn't helpless, she just didn't know how/what she was doing, yet she still tried. She may have been innocent but her thought process was great!
Sweet Home Highland Christmas - what can I say, I LOVED Ella (the child)! It was fun watching how the H/h felt the instant attraction and how they both handled it while dealing with an extremely strong willed and voiced child. The ending was especially hilarious!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and these are my thoughts on the book!

WOW!

Five stories about handsome, strong and steadfast Scots.

In each of these stories, no matter what, it is the man who is the lead character. Because in each of these stories, the men are the ones who choose to lead the way to love.

Christmas plays a part in each story. The spirit of the season adds warmth to every character's heart. Although Christmas is part of the atmosphere, it is evident that each story is about two people who would fall in love with one another no matter the season.

Each of these authors have built reputations on creating stories about two people who overcome obstacles on the way to their happily ever after together. These short stories are no exception.

In each of these stories, there is humor as well as a sense of tenderness.

I think that is what I enjoyed the most, the tenderness and caring shown by the heroic men in these stories. If I were forced to select which hero was my favorite, I am not sure I would be able to do it.

I received this book of lovely stories from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are my own.

This is a collection of five novellas with a Scottish theme.

A HIGHLANDER'S HOPE by Terri Brisbin -- Iain MacKillop is a widower who yearns for marriage and children, but intends on making his own choices this time. The one woman he can't stop thinking about is completely inappropriate. Robena MacKendimen is the village whore and while she too thinks about Iain, she knows that her status makes anything else between them impossible. This was a lot of story packed into a short novel. I really enjoyed the fact that this book doesn't flinch from the difficulties of a man falling in love with a whore. The story has a sweet aspect but also a serious one and there is no magic wand that resolves these issues which I really like. There are compromises and a will to make happiness happen. This is a novalla in the MacKendimen series. Rating: 3.5 stars.

A HIGHLAND CHRISTMAS WAGER by Lecia Cornwall -- Meggie MacLeod is forced to take refuge at a castle where there are three lairds. One of the lairds is the man that Meggie fell in love with at the age of eighteen before he broke her heart by marrying another. A wager between the men as to who will be able to gain her kisses ignites a competition between the men. Hugh MacAuley needs an heiress in order to satisfy the elders of his clan. He has come to ask the sister of his host, but Meggie tempts him with her fire and her sweetness. I enjoyed this story as Hugh is a shyer hero than I expected and this book really deals with Meggie having lost her virtue and yet Hugh choosing her despite all the cultural reasons he shouldn't. The story is really sweet between Meggie and Hugh. Rating: 3.5 stars.

A SCOT FOR CHRISTMAS by Bronwen Evans -- Dougray knows he must marry again to have an heir, but his love for his deceased wife means that he never intends to love a woman again. Instead, he will marry for companionship and children. Emma has loved Dougray since she was a child. At a houseparty, she challenges him to teach her about passion before she accepts her spinster existence. He is tempted to succumb to passion before choosing a life without deep emotions. I really enjoyed this story. Dougray and Emma are such nice people. Life and love has treated each of them with some difficulties. I liked how Dougray allows himself to be "convinced" by Emma but quickly realizes that there is more at work here than merely a spinster who wants to learn about physical love. This is one of the highlights of the set and a story I would read again. Rating: 4.5 stars.

LEFTOVER MISTLETOE by Lavinia Kent -- English Emma Spencer finds herself in a coach with James Barran. James is on his way to stop a wedding, but machinations leave him and Emma stranded at Christmas time at a cabin. I enjoyed this story which is focused intensely on the couple. The two being stranded allows them time to get to know one another even though the actual time period covered by the story. I liked the characters who are decent people who are trying their best to do the right thing. The story has a hot little element which I also enjoyed. Rating: 4 stars.

SWEET HOME HIGHLANDS by May McGoldrick -- Captain Gregory Pennington encounters a precocious child and her desperate aunt while waiting for travelers he is to accompany home. Freya Sutherland needs to marry someone immediately in order to keep her niece. I loved this story primarily because of the depiction of Freya's niece. She is adorable and really tied the story together. Penn and Freya are such nice, well meaning people that the niece is necessary to put some spice into the story. I was surprised at how much development was able to be done considering how few pages the authors had to work with. Penn is a gentleman who is looking for his purpose in life and finds it in a gentle woman and her strong willed, determined niece. Rating: 4.5 stars.

This is a wonderful anthology. I liked some of the novellas better than others but overall 4.5 stars rounded to 5.

A Highlander’s Hope by Terri Brisbin is a lovely second chance at love story. Iain, a 40ish widower, wants to marry Robena, a younger woman he loves. Robena, the town whore, was abused by her Laird’s son and feels unworthy to be a wife to any man. Can Iain convince her he’s serious?

A Highland Christmas Wager by Lecia Cornwall is part of the Highland Fairy Tale series. Each book is a different sister’s story so you do not have to have read them to enjoy Maggie’s story. Maggie and her grandmother are headed to her father’s castle but are caught in a snow storm near the MacVane castle. Maggie met MacVane years ago and is not happy to be stuck staying at his castle. But Laird MacAulay is also staying there and he interests her.

A Scot for Christmas by Bronwen Evans finds Dougray at his hunting lodge waiting for his friends to arrive. As a young man he visited Italy, and married a girl he met there. She died several years ago and he is planning on remarrying as he needs an heir. Surprise! His friend Thornton arrives with his sister Emma. Emma says she wanted to see a highland loch, but she has loved Dougray since she was 16. Will she get what she wants for Christmas? There is also a secondary story going on with his cousin Angus.

Leftover Mistletoe by Lavinia Kent sees Lady Emma Spencer on her way to her uncle’s house in Scotland due to her father’s death. A cousin inherited the title and her home. Unfortunately, her maid ran off with her valise and money so she is travelling alone through Scotland. The public coach has one other occupant, a sleeping man. Soon the coach stops in the middle of nowhere. The sleeping man is James Barran, injured war hero, who is trying to get to Glasgow to stop his sister from marrying his best friend. Fortunately, the coach stopped near a hunting cabin he knows of so they have some shelter from the winter weather. Will it be her best Christmas ever?

Sweet Home Highlands by May McGoldrick finds engineer Capt. Greg Pennington thinking of retiring and moving to Boston. For now, he’s escorting Freya, her 5-year-old niece Ella and their servants to the estate next to his parents. Ella’s paternal grandmother wants to meet her and maybe take her away from Freya. Ella’s mother died soon after having Ella and Freya has raised her. Freya plans to marry a cousin to have a better chance of keeping Ella, but will that happen? Ella is a marvelous character, 5 going on 25 and determined to get what she wants.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. It’s a wonderful Christmas book.

A Highlander’s Hope by Terri Brisbin

Iain McKillop is a widower who, by my calculations, is in his mid-40’s. He’s ready to marry again and his nephew thinks he can use him for some sort of clan alliance. Iain knows that there’s really only one woman for him, and that’s Robena of the MacKendimen clan.

Robena is the village harlot. While she doesn’t love what she does she has protection from people in the clan and they care about her. The only person who ostracizes her is the Laird of the Clan – who’s not a nice man anyway. Robena is excited when she hears that Iain is coming to visit for Christmas because she loves spending time with him. He puts a genuine smile on her face and of course she loves that he pays for her exclusive services while he’s there.

Robena can tell right away that there’s something different with Iain but is shocked when he asks for her hand in marriage. He wants a wife and a mother to his children. She doesn’t think she’s good enough for him and besides, she can’t have children – how can she be the person that Iain needs in his life?

I have to say that I wasn’t a huge fan of this story when it started but Iain and Robena soon won me over. Iain was such a giving man and he truly loved Robena – despite her profession. He dealt with her past men in his own way but certainly wasn’t willing for her to be with anyone else ever again. It was a sweet story in the end and I liked how Brisbin worked out the details of their future life together.

A Highland Christmas Wager by Lecia Cornwall

Meggie MacLeod is traveling home with her grandmother. She is excited to be going home for Christmas after being gone for three months taking care of her grandmother after she’d broken her leg. Unfortunately the weather is against them and they can’t make their halfway point before the blizzard begins. Their travelling group takes refuge at the closest keep and that happens to be the home of the man who’d taken Meggie’s virginity eight years earlier. She’s definitely not happy about being there.

Magnus McVane is the Laird that had seduced and left Meggie all those years ago. She’d thought herself in love with him after only 3 days but after he finally had sex with her, he left to go get married. She was devastated. Magnus isn’t home alone, however. He has his dead wife’s brother, Charlie McKay – yet another Laird – there with him. Magnus is hoping to get Charlie to marry his sister, Catriona, who they all think is a shrew. Also visiting is Laird Hugh MacAuley who is there under unknown circumstances. When Magnus sees Meggie he’s positive he can seduce her again and then he could probably marry her as she’s an heiress. Charlie’s got his eye on her as well though, and they end up making a wager, dragging Hugh into their game. Whoever gets Meggie to willingly kiss them first – a long kiss, not just a peck – gets a few prized possessions from each man, but also the right to talk to her father about her hand in marriage.

Hugh is at the keep as he’s been instructed by the elders of his clan to ask for Catriona’s hand in marriage – something he really doesn’t want to do. The elders don’t think the man has a brain and though he is laird he truly has no power. When he sees Meggie he is attracted to her immediately and rethinks his possible proposal to Catriona. He’s a shy man, however, and bumbles along with Meggie despite her attention to him.

This was a lovely, romantic story. I loved Hugh and his quiet, calm personality. He was a breath of fresh air compared to the obnoxious Magnus and the over-excitable Charlie. Hugh and Meggie were perfect for each other and the ending of the story put a smile on my face.

A Scot for Christmas by Bronwen Evans

Dougray is thinking about getting married to beget an heir but he plans on a marriage of convenience so that he won’t get attached to a wife. His first wife died and he doesn’t want to have to live through that once again. His plan is to marry a neighbor’s daughter, Fiona Mackenzie, so that he can help her father financially. He made a promise to his dying father that he would help the Mackenzie, but the man would not accept his funds – even as a loan. Marrying Fiona is the only way he can get the funds to him.

Dougray and his cousin, Angus, are having a hunting party around Christmas time. A party that includes his friends and their paramours, with a couple other women of questionable virtue coming along as well. When Dougray’s best friend’s younger sister arrives he’s horrified and tries to get her to leave at once. She refuses, of course, and instead asks him something. She is in her late 20’s and has come to terms with her spinsterhood. She asks Dougray to sleep with her. She’s been in love with him for years and plans on having the memory of their lovemaking to last the rest of her life. Dougray refuses at first but then finally agrees as he can’t resister her. He doesn’t realize until later that Emma is in love with him. Despite his growing feelings for Emma he’s determined to marry Fiona Mackenzie. He refuses to have a wife he cares about.

This was a good story, not one of my least favorites. I guess it was just too predictable in my opinion. I knew that Dougray would sleep with Emma, of course, and he would fall in love with her and live happily ever after. It was written in an entertaining way, and I liked the characters, but I just wasn’t a huge fan of A Scot for Christmas.

Leftover Mistletoe by Lavinia Kent

Emma Spencer is having a bad day – really, a bad life. Her dear father had passed on and her cousin had taken the Earl’s title. Unfortunately her cousin wasn’t a kind man and she was being sent to Scotland to live with her uncle who she didn’t even know. Emma had marriage prospects as she was quite pretty. She believes her cousin is sending her away so she won’t ever marry. Her financial portion would then stay in his hands forever.

She was travelling when her maid disappeared with her bag. Her trunks were coming later and with the maid gone she was left with the clothes on her back, her reticule, and very little money. She buys passage on a coach and the only other passenger is a snoring man who takes up way too much room. At one point during their travels they stop. Emma doesn’t know why and soon all is quiet. When the man finally wakes up and goes to investigate he finds that there’s no coachman and the team of horses have been driven off as well. He’s familiar with the land so he takes Emma to a cabin where they try to brave the storm that has begun.

Emma finds out he’s James Barran and he’s on his way to Edinburgh so that he can stop his sister from marrying his best friend. He loves his best friend, but doesn’t want his sister marrying him. He’s bound and determined to stop the wedding but his friend Robbie kept throwing up roadblocks to stop him. One being the fact that Robbie paid the coachman to take the horses and now he and Emma are stranded. They head to the cabin and while they’re there their attraction to each other grows and they start to fall in love.

Kent always writes such charming romances. This was no different. Yes, the couple fell in love quickly but it fit with their lives and circumstances of their confinement. I thought James and Emma were perfect for each other and complimented each other well. The humor in the story is another thing I liked about this story. The banter between Emma and James was engaging and I found myself smiling a lot while reading.

Sweet Home Highlands by May McGoldrick

Captain Gregory Pennington is on his way home to his family for Christmas but is tasked by his brother with escorting four adults and a child to a neighboring estate near his home. He’s in a pub and is anxious to be on his way when a small child starts up a conversation. She’s a funny little imp and mature beyond her 5 or 6 years. It turns out that this is the child that he is to escort along with her aunt, Freya, and couple of servants. The fourth person was to be Freya’s almost-fiancé but he doesn’t ever show up.

Freya is a young woman who has raised her niece almost from birth. She was only 17 when her sister died a week after giving birth and she loves little Ella like her own. Ella’s father was killed in the war and his family never wanted anything to do with Ella until recently. Now Ella’s grandmother is demanding their appearance at her home so that she can make sure that Ella is financially well taken care of. She also intimated that Freya wasn’t a proper guardian because she wasn’t married. Because of this Freya had an understanding with the cousin that would inherit Freya’s father’s title and lands when he eventually passed. Freya wasn’t looking forward to the marriage but was resigned to her fate in order to keep Ella with her.

Gregory is smitten with Freya the minute he sees her. The minutes they spend together on the journey just make him like her more and more. Freya starts to fall for Gregory as well but she knows that she must marry her cousin in order to appease Ella’s grandmother.

As I read more of McGoldrick’s books the more I become a fan. This story was simply romantic on all levels. It was the kind of story that will make you sigh with wonder at how sweet it is – but not sugary at all. Just downright a lovely story. This is kind of a prequel to a new series that McGoldrick is putting out and I personally can’t wait for it to release.

Gregory and Freya were wonderful in the story and little Ella – that child with a personality beyond her years – was enchanting. I liked everything about this story and highly recommend it.

In the end I thought this was a very good historical anthology. A lovely compliment of authors that brought a little Christmas cheer and romance to my life.

a simply awesome box set of stories. Loved them all.

4.5 Stars! These were all really good stories! I enjoyed reading each and every one of them! The downside to them being novellas is that they feel somewhat unfinished or they aren’t as specific at times & than the story doesn’t live up to it’s potential. They were really good reads but I wish they were longer, with more information & answered all the questions I had. Still, they were definitely worth reading! You get 5 stories in 1 book! I 100% recommend this book!
