This book is everything a psychological thriller/mystery should be! The author created characters that are well developed and a plot that moves along quickly! I found myself completely immersed in this one! Highly recommend!

I'm a fan of noir in all its forms and found this book enjoyable if a bit meandering at times. I would definitely recommend this for all who have a soft spot for noir.

This book about the murder of a prostitute, and the involvement of various members of a night shelter failed to hit the spot. With brutal Cops and Low life locals it was all a little predictable and felt dated. I didn't engage enough about any of the characters to get involved with the story. I would not recommend.

Jimmy Morton lead character in this book was an interesting young man. When I started to read I mistakenly thought the story was based in the late 18000 or early 19000, as I read on I became aware it is set in current times. Interesting how some things don't change. The story line and plot was excellent and clearly well researched. The political intrigue and cover ups taking place by Lord Catesby and his mates to enable them to lead the life they wanted to regardless of others well being is very believable ! A well written book with interesting characters and a good plot. I didn't want to put it diwn.

I enjoyed parts of this book but not enough for me to recommend it to others. Set in London centred around the homeless community. The main character of Jimmy, is asked to help move a dead body but he refuses. His boss, Toby, then asks him to help clear up after a late night party. Things become a bit more clear as the abuse of power and corruption are revealed. The plot was good but it failed to deliver as it was just a bit too unbelievable, especially the police investigation into the murder. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Amazon.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Troubadour Publishing Ltd/Matador for a review copy of Night Shelter, a stand alone set in the London homeless community.

Jimmy Morton is asked by Betty Thrussell to help move the dead body of local prostitute, Eva, she has found in her hall. He refuses and tells her to call the police but she doesn't. He shrugs it off but things become clearer to him when his part time boss, Toby Friabin, calls him at midnight to clean up after a party in some private rooms of the Dog and Duck pub.

Night Shelter is a mixed bag. I enjoyed some parts of it but I didn't like the main thrust of it, namely the abuse of power and the corruption, graft and bribery that go with it. The plotting is good with not quite legal Toby running some interesting and believable cons and blackmailing schemes. He is by far the most realistic character in the novel and I like his style, manoeuvring and jaundiced view of the world. Jimmy is his straight man who, despite his lifestyle, has a well developed sense of right and wrong.

The police investigation into the murder of Eva is, to my mind, old fashioned and not something I can bring myself to believe about the modern police service - framing and getting the conviction of an innocent man to protect powerful figures. The reasoning behind it is interesting and would have been plausible in years gone by but recent times have shown that no one is exempt from the long arm of the law.

Night Shelter is a good read with a twisty plot and some memorable characters if you are prepared to suspend your disbelief, unfortunately I couldn't.
