This was a fast-paced, interesting read, that I found I did not want to put down! Great, multi-faceted characters. Vivid descriptions. Kept me captivated from the first page to the last. An excellent read!

I'm sorry to say this book wasn't really for me. I tried to get involved with the story but just couldn't do it. I have no complaints of the way it was written but it generally wasn't my cup of tea.

Dixie Demons is a vampire novel that follows two Russian women as they travel to the New World to meet with a plantation owner seeking companionship. There were a number of layers to this book, some of which could be a bit disturbing readers. First, there is the slavery aspect. Next, the plantation owner has a very sick obsession with violence and torture. He has a history of inviting young girls back to his home and using them to feed his appetite for rape and torture. The author doesn't get too descriptive with this, but its implied throughout the book. These layers, for me, overshadowed the vampire element of the story. Overall, half decent dark story, but I felt the author could have balanced the book a bit better.

Thanks to NetGalley for this. I really didn't know what to expect from this book, but I decided to give it a try anyway. It started off a little slowly, but then gained momentum. I generally do enjoy vampire novels as long as they're not too over-the-top - and this one was not. In fact, in the beginning, I was not certain where the vampires came into the narrative; when they did, it was very well done. As a self-contained novel, this was very satisfying - all of the 'bad guys' got it in the end, and the 'good guys' (although two were vampires) triumphed in the end over true evil. Recommended highly.
