Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get into it.

This book was OK however I found it to be a little lacking. The pace was extremely fast which allowed for a little character development. I’m not sure that I will be continuing on in the series.

The Becoming of Ellicia Wayfield is a young adult, supernatural story about a high school girl named Ellicia who is, unbeknownst to her, destined to become the protector of the world against supernatural evils. She arrives in a new town and school following her father's sudden death, finds that the residents of the town are a bit off, and eventually uncovers some big family secret. The story includes a plethora of otherworldly creatures, to include ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and angels. Not much new here in the young adult supernatural world as a reader. I also just really didn't like the character of Ellicia. She is very disrespectful to the people who have taken her in after her father's death. I also don't understand how a character can be okay with vampires, werewolves, and spirits running around, but she questions the existence of angels. The pace was really choppy and awkward. It was like reading a really bad episode of Supernatural (which I love). Bottom line, not much new in the young adult, supernatural realm and really awkward execution.

The becoming of ELLICIA Wayfield  by Kemdi ik.
ANGELS & DEMONS = FICTIONAL. RIGHT?
Ellicia Wayfield doesn't believe in the supernatural world, despite what she witnessed a year ago, especially now that she's dealing with a lot: the loss of a family member, her upcoming seventeenth birthday, settling down in a new town and being the new kid at her school. Besides, not everything has to be a supernatural mystery. Right?
Often, odd occurrences can easily be explained away. For example, that weird student in one of Ellicia's classes drinks blood, not because he's a vampire, but because he's part of some sort of satanic cult (or because Ellicia was drugged up on hallucinogens and ended up seeing things that weren't real). There's definitely no other explanation for that….
While some things can be explained away, others just can't. They are what they are, just like this new reality Ellicia finds herself in. Then there's also that word, destiny, which can sometimes be a burden. Just ask Ellicia.
A very good read. 4*.

Why DNF? From the start of the book it was a no for me, transitions are off (jumps from story point to story point), tropey (I know what is going to happen)

The Becoming of Ellicia Wayfield is book 1 of the Winged One series by Kemdi Ik from Kay & Unruly Press, released 22 Sept, 2015.

It's a YA urban fantasy with a high school and town full of supernatural beings (vampires/angels/werewolves etc) and supernatural hunters called 'ashers'. Ellicia herself is a protector (of the hell gates, what that involves is never precisely stated in the first book).

I understand sarcasm and snark seem to be quite popular in YA fantasy (and a fair bit of adult fantasy, especially the post-Dresden urban fantasy). I don't know if it's easier to write than standard dialogue, but it does get very repetitive.

There are so many shameless homages to other fantasy series and archetypes in this book that I found myself thinking 'I definitely saw this in Buffy/Twilight/True Blood/insert flavor of the month supernatural series'.

Ellicia herself is thoroughly unpleasant, sarcastic, mean and generally annoying. Many of the characters are very two dimensional and there were some serious plot holes which were never satisfactorily addressed.

There are glimpses of technical expertise in the writing and this could have been a fine book.

Two stars

I did not finish this book. The wording and dialogue was awkward. The synopsis made it seem that it had more of a sense of humor than it actually did. All in all the first few chapters made me think Twilight and a couple of other books were all mashed together. I did like the fact that Ellicia was biracial but that fact wasn't enough to keep me interested in the story.

3.5 -I was not sure about this book after all the reviews on it, but it was interesting to me. It did seem to be missing some of the depth for the characters and be a little fast paced at times but I thought the overall plot was interesting I would read the next book in this series. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this and write a honest review.

Wanted to like this, but it just didn't work for me. Wasn't the worst thing I've read but I expected it to be better.

Poorly written and sloppily paced.

Full of suspense and mystery, there is a lot of story going on in the book. I did feel that the characters could use a little more development, but overall this is a great story
