I have read the first 3 novels of this series and Ms. McCollum continues to write another enjoyable read. She brings back characters from the other novels, but you do not need to read the others in the series. Grace Ellington, one of the main characters was introduced in the first novel of the series. Now, you can see how she has grown and wants to be independent, not being told she should marry or have someone to protect her. Grace grows in this novel, to the woman she wants to be, not what everyone expects of her. She wants to be brave and overcome her fears. She does not fear Keir MacKinnon, also know as the Devil of Dunakin, rather she is attracted to him, even when she learns of the title he goes by. Grade sees the man behind the hood, the ones who has goodness, kindness, and compassion. Keir's actions to his brother's decisions show the man he is, even though he portrays himself as a killer. Keir has much guilt on his conscious and tattoos crosses on his skin for every person he has killed. He believes he will serve his brother until his death and does not think of a future beyond that until Grace stumbles into his life. Even though he kidnaps her to use her skills as a healer to save his nephew, he sees a brave woman who is not afraid of him, but stands up to him. When Grace diagnosis Keir's nephew, they realize there is much more at stake. They work together to solve the problem, but there are other "tormentors". Keir cares for Grace and will protect her, even if it is from himself. Grace wants Keir, the man, and tries to show him there is more than him being a killer for the chief. Keir does not think he can be more than a killer and masks his true intentions. Will he be able to stand up to the chief when a command forces him to reevaluate what he truly wants?
