Halfway is a dark and dirty book about a young man who lives a significant part of his young life in two halfway houses. He tells his story and he tells about his companions. The story is complete, starting with his upbringing and ending with his reflections on his awkwardness at dinner parties. The author and his characters are constantly interesting. His writing style is like none other and probably reflects the stream of consciousness of an alcoholic. This is a true, autobiographical story, but in his telling, he seems to go off the rails a bit. What he's telling is the meaning of it all. These men were constantly expected to fail even by those working to help them, and many of them did. There are many books about people in recovery, but this book shines a light on the space in between.
