The series continues with another great entry! The Rogue Queen is an excellent addition and greatly carries the story of Kalinda. While this is Kalinda’s story, Deven’s story is equally as important. Kalinda is infected with the cold fire from Udug which enables her to use her own power. Every time she tries to search for her own inner soul fire she just sees the blue sapphire light that is now inside of her. Her coldness causes her to seek warmth wherever she can, which leads her to Ashwin. Ashwin seems to be the only one to cause the cold to disappear. Once Mathura and Rohan appear without Brac and Opal, Deven knows he has to go find them. Unable to trust Hastin, he tries to convince Kalinda not to go back to Samiya for the meeting. Kalinda feels like this is the only way to beat Udug and put Ashwin on the throne. Disagreeing on this and the ever growing closeness of Kalinda and Ashwin, they take different paths. Kalinda and Deven taking different paths brought so much more depth to the story. Each path has issues and difficulties to overcome. I felt like I needed to know what was going to happen. Will Kalinda and Ashwin created the alliance in Samiya? Will Deven and the other be caught in the demon rajah’s camp? The suspense of not knowing if they will succeed and get to Tarachand in time was very well executed. Being able to read from both point of views really ties the story together.

New friendship and alliances are formed while old ones are tested. We get more of Indah and Pons who are great additions to the story. All of the new characters introduced in this story successfully balance the old characters we are already invested in. I found Kalinda's to be a little whiny in this book but that quickly resolves in the end! At some points I did find it hard to read her story and was waiting to get back to Deven. I kept reminding myself that she was infected with the cold fire and she’ll return back to her strong self. She has accepted her role as Kindred more and her confidence was higher than when we originally see her back in The Hundredth Queen. I really enjoy seeing her grow with each task and can only imagine how strong she will be in the final book! We get a lot from Deven’s point of view in this book, which makes me love his character ever more! His devotion is so admirable. He really would do anything for those he loves. I am really glad that we were able to get more of Deven in this book as his character brings more to the story than just a love interest. All of the characters create some sort of connection that I am truly interested and concerned with what happens next in the story.

Overall, The Rogue Queen was the perfect addition to this series. I enjoyed every minute of the story and did not want to put it down. The ending of the book is AMAZING. Once I started, I honestly could not stop. Each part that happens makes you want more. This whole series has been amazing, and this book did not disappoint. I cannot wait to continue the story and see what happens next.

A great continuation to an amazing series.

I enjoyed this book. I thought it was the last in the series so I'm a bit disappointed because now I want to read the next book.

I'm not a fan of love triangles. So it was kind of a problem for me. Anyway, Deven is still such a good character. His feelings for Kalinda and the empire are really remarkable. The plot is still captivating and worth the wait.

For those who read the series from the start, don't hesitate to continue following the adventures of Kalinda, Ashwin, Deven and their friends.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book disappointed me.
The first half wanders and seems unimportant to the larger story. It is more concerned with developing a love triangle than with wrapping up the series. It's incredibly melodramatic. Chapters and chapters are devoted to miscommunications and hurt feelings. Then later when characters die, the sentimentality is lacking. It was really odd overall. Perhaps King sacrificed high emotion during fight scenes in favor of bravery. Deven and Kalinda are supposed to be brave and confident as fighters by this book in the series, but that doesn't mean all of their emotion in battle needs to revolve around fear for their companions. Besides, that fear for their companions was still sort of lacking in emotion imo.

Certain deaths felt cheap and unnecessary. Most of the decisions made by Kali and Deven felt illogical or unexplained, which was odd since the story is in first person and we get a ton of details about their feelings regarding their relationship.
Everything came together too neatly during the first climax. I'm glad it wasn't the final climax, because several things felt too convenient. Then Kali continues to make hasty illogical decisions...The title of "Rogue Queen" is really apt.

Overall, I was really disappointed in this book and SURPRISED to find so many problems with it. I expected to love it. I know that advanced copies sometimes have errors that are not in the final copy that gets published, but there were A LOT of things that bothered me about this book. I still plan to continue with the series when the final book comes out. Hopefully, I will enjoy it more.

Spoilery opinions about specific characters:

I think Kali should have killed Anjali at the midpoint. Sure, it would have made Hastin's interactions with Devin and the Rani's dramatically different at the end, but why did she have to live? I guess she's coming back in book four.

I wanted way more Brac, was terrified he would be killed off for no reason, was thrilled he wasn't, and hope he gets his own spin off series. Because BRAC. He's amazing.

When Gemi came on to Deven I was all kinds of annoyed. But I LOVED how he felt the same lol. And I loved her sort of apologizing about it a few chapters later.

Manas is described as "a boy younger than [Kali]" in The Hundredth Queen. So why in the world is he the GENERAL of the army? I wouldn't have minded so much if King had drawn attention to his stature and youth. But the way he is depicted in Rogue Queen is like he's a full on adult who can easily command soldiers. Cruelty does not 100% equal might. Yatin for instance is HUGE compared to Manas. Other soldiers would be too. It just felt like who he WAS was ignored for convenience's sake.

Rohan's death felt cheap to me. I don't mind that he died so much as the way Deven reacted to it. If it was supposed to be such a hard choice for him to make, he should have felt more pained about it. The logic behind him just standing there was not enough for me AT ALL. And him laying out the body and covering it with stones all night, crying, was not remorse enough.

So when Opal died, I was like 'duh.' Another cheap death.

I didn't need Tinley in the story. I get the swooping in of the birds and the ships at the end being AWESOME, but Tinley's role in and of itself was lacking. It was too simple. She was too much of a crutch, silently there to help when needed and gone when unnecessary.

I did grow to like Chitt. His introduction seemed like too much at the beginning. Again, that whole 'why are there so many new things happening when this book is supposed to be wrapping everything up?' BUT by the end, I was glad for him.

This book did not disappoint me at all. It was action packed and fast-paced, and I was able to immerse myself in the action easily.
I loved the back and forth POV chapters between Kalinda and Deven, it made it much easier to see their relationship opinions as well as the different places when they split up.
I also loved that we saw a return of the competitors from the second book, and got to learn a bit more about where they were from and their customs, and that near the end of the book you could see the camaraderie between everyone.
The small twist at the end had me gasping - and hoping that it means there are more stories to come from Kalinda and Deven in the future.

I took a while to get back into this detailed and gorgeous world, but once I was there I loved how it all played out. The war between the three sides was well done - I especially liked what happens between the rebels and Ashwin’s side.
I also loved getting to see more of the competitors from the second tournament and some of their part of the world.
There’s a couple of things that made me knock this down from four stars to 3.5 - firstly the POV changes worked well previously, but I struggled to keep up a little here. And second, the action capitulates a little quickly for my taste. There’s lots of build up and it suddenly seemed to be over.
Having said that, I loved how it ended and what it implies for the fourth and final book.

All in all book 3 was not that bad. I gave it 4/5 because it did seem to have a slower start. Narrated by Kalinda and Deven, the main characters.
It does have everything you look for in ya novel!! Love triangles, forbidden loves, forbidden journeys, and worlds at war. We are learning more about Kalindas power and her people.
Kalinda had killed her husband Rajah Tarek, Prince Ashwins father. She won the trials, and her palce was upon the throne.
However, Prince Ashwin has opened the void and released the demon Udug. The demon, who now takes Tareks' form wages war between the people, and the realms.
Can Kalinda and Ashwin stop the demon and send him back into the Voider? Can they restore order to their peoples lives and their own?
Especially with the poison from the demon Udug, coursing through Kali and suffocating her soul fire, or so she thinks. Deven will soon find out.
In search of warmth, what lengths will Kali go to?
So much action and more packed into book 3!! I love this series and can't wait for more to read this amazing addition!!

The world is enchanting, the characters fiesty and everything is beyond magical. If you have not read this series you definitely need too.

So, I was hoping that the third book in The Hundredth Queen series was a little bit faster paced and exciting than the second and I was not let down. The love triangle that was hinted in the second is also int he third, but it's done in a more realistic, subtle way and not a "Ohhhh I'm so attracted to him and to HIM TOO." Though, I have to be honest, I found myself rooting more for Ashwin than for Devin. Sorrynotsorry.

This is a quick read, like the others so I never really felt bogged down by too much political and was mess like most fantasy novels. It gets to the point and stays there.

Ok, so there's another book coming out which I didn't know until I read some reviews after I finish the book, but I could tell by how it ended. I'd gladly read it.

Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read this arc.

"I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review"

Despite the odds, Kalinda has survived it all: Marriage to a tyrant. Tournaments to the death. The forbidden power to rule fire. The icy touch of a demon.
That same demon now disguises itself as Rajah Tarek, Kalinda’s late husband and a man who has never stopped haunting her. Upon taking control of the palace and the army, the demon brands Kalinda and her companions as traitors to the empire. They flee across the sea, seeking haven in the Southern Isles.
To take back the empire, Kalinda will ally with those she distrusts—and risk losing those most loyal to her—to defeat the demon and bring peace to a divided nation.

This is the 3rd book in the series and I have to say it gripped me from the start. I love the characters and world as well as the writing style. Emily R King has managed to bring such a complex story to life and I can not wait to see what happens next especially with how this book ends.

Kalindas Character hand me on an emotional roller coaster at times I wanted to shake her and some times I was so proud of her strength. This girl has been so much and still keeps fighting for her people.

Deven had me feeling the same way in this book. His Character I found frustrating in to begin with (in this book) but he pulled in at the end.

Ashwin I still find it had to trust his intentions. I am not sure if he is the sweetest guy or the most cunning, I guess I will have to wait to find out. In saying that I think this book showed a lot of growth.

I loved this book so much and hate that I have to wait so long to find out what happens next. I ended up giving this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I normally do not like books that have multiple POV but this one didn’t bother me so much as a gave me a better glimpse into the mind of the characters. I wish there was more tournaments and more depth in the book. The book was really good but not great.
I’m really tired of reading books that have love triangles especially when a relationship is Artie been established with another main character. I just feel like we have ridden that horse past its breaking point, then into the ground, and beat it senseless long past its death. I did like that Kali and Deven’s relationship struggled and wasn’t all hunky dory like in real life. I did not like that Ashwin took advantage of their plight and tried to control Kali by manipulations. Kali let Ashwin pretty much get away with murder and gave Deven lip about it when he pointed out the issues at hand. Very childish and catty on both parts.
The action parts were really good and well written. I feel like they are the only parts of the book that were meaningful when the rest of it lacked the finesse that the first two books had. The new characters and places were a bit hard to follow along with at times and I forgot which way was up. I did enjoy introducing new bhutas from other cultures, there was just too many!
Is it bad that the villain became my favorite character? I am just now sure where the series is really going, and I believe that the storyline was rushed with this one. I do appreciate all the hard work and effort the author put into this book. For the last book, I hope they take their time and solve all of the issues at hand with Kali and her friends/allies because there’s just too much going on and nothing is getting resolved.
I would recommend this book to people who like love triangles, action, and adventure even though this book wasn’t really for me.
Think you know Netgalley and Skyscape for allowing me to read this copy in advance! All thought and comments were my own and in no way influenced.

This is the third book of the Hundredth Queen series. This is not a standalone so you should definitely read the first two before reading my review.****

Kalinda has survived being married to a tyrant, tournaments to the death, her power over fire that is forbidden, and the touch of a demon.

That demon disguises itself as Kalindas late husband. When it took control of the palace it branded Kalinda a traitor and now she is on the run.

In the safe haven she finds, her powers are not forbidden. But she soon realizes the demon poisoned her and now her power is uncontrollable. Now Kalinda is set on taking back the empire.

This book is definitely action packed. It's got a bit of everything you could want in a fantasy series. There aren't too many dull moments and it proceeds at a steady pace.

I've really been loving this series and was excited for this third book to come out. I was a bit worried because I'm not a huge fan of love triangles and Prince Ashwin really got on my nerves in book 2. Throughout this book I did feel the urge to slap Kalinda a few times to make her wake up and realize what she had with Deven but I'll admit there was a bit of a twist that made the love triangle more palatable. Still I thought the book could have been better without the love triangle and is one of the main reasons this isn't 5 stars for me.

Other than that I really enjoyed the story. There was a lot of action and I loved seeing some of the past characters again such as Tinley, Indah and Pons. I wish we had a little more Brac but it was we did get to know a little more about his history as well. It was also nice seeing Kalinda come almost full circle as she goes back to the temple she was raised in and also back to the Palace to face the other ranis and courtesans she had left behind.

The only other minor disappointment I had was I thought this was a trilogy but the way it ends makes me think the series is continuing which is great but also I wanted to see what will happen in the end. Still a great read and I am grateful to the publisher for granting me access via Netgalley.

The story started off well and seemed promising but it failed to keep my interest, I hate to leave the book incomplete and that's the only reason I finished this book , unfortunately not my cup of tea .

I cannot say enough good things about this series! I only wish that the books were longer, but I tear through each book like my life depends on it. I look forward to the next one!

This book completely blew me away, I adored the two stories prior to this but by the end I was in tears through all of the emotion in this book. Right near the beginning when Kali realises the extent to her circumstances she wastes no time to continue as planned and not dwell on the revelations – forever putting her people before her own health. Her character matures even more in The Rogue Queen and she becomes even more of a role model to those younger.

The use of two POVs – Kali and Devens’ – is continued with The Rogue Queen and it serves to further demonstrate the events in a full and detailed way. Prince Ashwin’s character develops further and we see that he has a lot more maturing to do – especially when it comes down to knowing what he should do for the good of his people. He’s riddled with regret throughout due to previous events but he remains to be a far more likeable and noble character than we would expect from the son of Rajah Tarek.

There are a lot of new characters introduced in this book from various parts of the world also – adding to the world building with a range of different cultures and more Bhuta characters. My personal favourite new addition is that of Gemi – from the beginning she is headstrong and quite sassy, I’d love to see more of her in the final book. There’s a return of many characters from the first two books also, and it really helps to establish a connection with a lot of them.

I’m so glad there’ll be another story to this wonderful world, I don’t think 3 books would be enough for me! Having read this story in the series also I’d love for even more books from different characters backstories and prequels and everything… (I can hope, right?)

This book had me hooked right from the first page. There is action from beginning to end.

Rajah Tarek has risen from the dead, only its not really him. A demon from the void, released by Prince Ashwin poses as his deceased father. In order for the demon to be free to release his master, he must make Ashwin's wish come true, which is of him ruling over their kingdom. With the demon posing as Rajah Tarek, no one will listen to Ashwin and Kalinda. As war over the empire begins, Kalinda, Ashwin and Deven must find a way to send the demon back to the void, before the world they know is lost forever.

I am so happy with how this series is turning out. I love all the books equally, they are all so different but all very goon in their own ways.

I adore Kalinda, and my opinion of her only keeps getting better and better. After the demon breathes ice-fire into Kalinda, her powers aren't the same. Her once bright flame has turned green, and no healers can heal her from the poison of the demon. We finally see a darker side to Kalinda in this book, and it was absolutely wonderful to read about.

The world building in this book was even better than the previous. We see so many new places, and get a visit to some settings from the first book. The world Emily created sort of just comes together in this book, and it was fantastic to read about.

The plot in this book was definitely my favourite out of all three books. There was seriously action from beginning to end, and there wasn't a moment in the book where I was bored.

Overall, this series just keeps getting better and better and I cannot wait to read the next book (I'm assuming there will be another book based on the ending). I highly recommend this book to all YA Fantasy fans, especially if you loved the first two books.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

"Kali is the heart of the new Tarachand. Lose her, and the future is meaningless."

Oh how this book gave me feels. Let me just lay it all out for you.

THIS WAS BASICALLY THE ECLIPSE OR THE CATCHING FIREOF THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN SERIES. Because it was a huge "who is Kali going to give her heart to" game for like the entire freaking book. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a love triangle, but it did get a bit ridiculous for a while there in the middle. Don't say I didn't warn you.

One thing that I've loved about The Hundredth Queen series since the beginning is how fierce the female sister warriors are. And I will say that at least Kali has the good sense to know that saving the empire has to come before her personal love life. Like, thank goodness someone gets that, because I hate in YA how the entire fate of civilization can be on the line and all that matters to the heroine is who she most wants to kiss. Kali truly tries to put the good of others first, and in their own way Ashwin and Deven do as well, and that redeems their little love triangle in my book.

Also, while Ashwin is by far my favorite of the two, I think that Kali's relationship with Deven is, at the very least, authentic. I didn't have a hard time believing that she loved him. I want her to love Ashwin, but I get that my ship is probably sunk forever. Womp womp womp. I guess I will have to go on.

Natesa is as ferocious and precocious as ever in this book, which I will forever be grateful for. It's always funny when a character you don't like in the beginning of a series ends up being one of your most beloved characers, isn't it? Natesa is definitely my girl now, and she had some serious BA moments that I squealed over. Where would the men be without Natesa? Dead, probably. Dead or imprisoned or worse. She's the best.

"My time in the world of men has taught me that any man worthy of my admiration would never force me to worship him."

I love the themes in The Rogue Queen. There is a deep exploration of freedom and equality, and what that truly looks like for all parties. I loved seeing the sister warriors coming together as one and carving out their own place in the world. They're role models I will gladly point all of my children to one day.

There's a story early on in the book that I loved, which I believe holds a key to what the fourth (and final?) book will be about, and if I'm right then I am SO EXCITED for the next book to finally be in my hands (WHY DOES IT NOT HAVE A RELEASE DATE OR A TITLE YET?!?!!?). I love love love where King is taking this series. It's going to be epic.

Rating: 5/5 stars

I don't quite know what to think about this series anymore other than it's lost me. Sad as it is to say, this series isn't working well. I always found It curious that these books are coming out so fast (6 months versus a year) and the race to get them out had me concerned. Now I see these books aren't getting the attention and time they deserve to be standout.

The first book started off well, but once the story started progressing elsewhere in the series, it got a bit annoying. And what bothered me in the second book is even worse in this one and made me whip through to just move on. Mainly, the main characters over dramatize and over exaggerate EVERYTHING. "Every time we meet the rebels someone dies." Oh my word, it happened once! The internal thoughts of the main characters make mountains out of molehills and it killed the flow of the story. I rolled my eyes so often.

I struggled to follow along with this instalment as well. There are more and more characters and places being introduced, and it hit that point where it starts going over my head and I need a glossary. Often I found the action scenes too hard to follow. Plot points showed up and took over the story with little introduction or reason, and of course the reaction of the characters only made it worse. I also found that any time the characters were in trouble or things looked dire, the way they got out of it was too convenient, too easy. I also found I didn't care. When nice characters die and I don't bat an eye, we got an issue.

If I get approved for the last book, I'll read it, but right now I don't see myself trying too hard to finish this series otherwise. And I'm disappointed that that is my opinion.

I honestly did not enjoy reading this book, the writing was just not as well done as it was with The 100th Queen and The Fire Queen. I did enjoy seeing some characters pop in from the previous books, but the plot just wasn't interesting for this one. The romance seemed very forced at this point with the characters. The ending was left way too open for me, and I assumed this was the last book. Overall I read this in many sittings, and it did not invest me as much as the others.
