I enjoyed this book. It was descriptive and intriguing. It took me a while to get into it but the characters were interesting and I wanted to know where this story was going to go. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy novel. There was a little bit of mystery and a little bit of adventure. The ending however, surprised me and made me excited for the next book to come out so we can continue the adventure with Sylvie.

One thing that really stuck out to me was when a character experienced the death of a loved one. The way the author described the emotions and the thoughts was accurate and really well written. There was even a quote that stuck with me - "pain defies time".  At some points this book did creep me out momentarily reanimating my fear of the dark. Nicholas Rinth let the innocent, the good and the undeserving die without shielding the brutalities of death from the reader.

Sylvie is strong, powerful and witty, I enjoyed getting to know her character. Although she can be distant from her emotions at times die to her brutal job. She is reliable as we know her secrets and how much she cares about those around her.
Jack is arrogant and funny yet we can still see that his careless and playful nature do not deter him from his work and his goals.
If there is one thing that I can say to persuade you to read this book is that I loved the funny banter between Sylvie and Jack.
