Tying the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey is the story of Alex Sinclair and Lucy FitzHarris.
When Alex and Lucy were young Alex stepped in to take up for Lucy when her brother took a toy. Alex had told her father that he would protect Lucy. Lucy is the illegitimate daughter to the Duke of Chatham. Now years later Lucy hoped to marry her brother's friend but that isn't going to happen. Alex too is feel the sting of rejections, so when the Duke ask him to marry his daughter Lucy he agrees. When Lucy gives in she decided to head to Scotland to meet with him. When Alex and his men meet up with her, he doesn't disclose who he is..wanting to get to know her first.
A misunderstand comes between them that does lead to some danger.
I am so in love with this story! I can't wait to read more books from Ms. Trethewey !!

Loved how the story opened, with the meeting of Alex and Lucy as children. I loved reading this story. Lucy is sent from her home to Northern Scotland, but instead of being a total brat about it, she makes the best of her situation. She finds herself falling in love with the area and the people, as well as her future husband.

Alex was a great match for her personality. Watching his reserves crumble around her was very fun. Very much recommend for any lovers of Highland romance.

Alex Sinclair and Lucy FitzHarris met as children, Alex was smitten with her and acted in her defense when her brother threw her ball in the pond. Alex retrieved her ball and punched her brother. Lucy's father asked 11 year old Alex to swear an oath to be 9 year old Lucy's protector.

Fast forward nine years, Lucy learns that the man she hoped to marry, the man with a title that would make the ton overlook her illegitimate birth, has gone and gotten engaged to another woman. And to make matters worse, her father has betrothed her to a Scotsman! She begs, she whines, she cries, she throws a tantrum and spends the next few weeks trying to have her father call off the wedding.

Alex has agreed to the wedding, he knows it will benefit his clan and he wants to show his father that he has matured. Alex is a little heart sore, he asked a woman to marry him and she rejected him, so he hopes he will be able to have a happy marriage with Lucy, he remembers her as a little girl, but wants to know what kind of woman she has become. He concocts a rather stupid plan to pretend to be part of her escort so he can observe her without her knowing who he is.

All is going well until Lucy learns the truth and flips out. I personally thought her reaction was over the top and painted her as a vindictive, spoiled, immature brat. And she cannot let it go - for almost half the book, she is mad at him and plotting her "revenge". They finally make up and it seems like she is maturing a bit. She finally agrees to marry him and then she misunderstand something she sees Alex doing. Again, she flat out refuses to listen to his explanation and ends up putting herself in peril.

Alex is a hot head and a bit immature himself, but he really cares for Lucy and when he learns she left, he takes off after her.

This is a new author to me and I thought the writing was good, the story did move right along and stayed on point. There was action, betrayal, kidnappings, multiple villains, interesting secondary characters, a couple of mild love scenes and a lot of frustrating misunderstandings before these two get a HEA.

This was new author to me and while I didn't love this story, I would be willing to read her future work.

3.5 stars
As a young boy Alex Sinclair pledged an oath to the Duke of Chatham promising to serve and protect his illegitimate daughter, Lucy FitzHarris. Nine years later, the duke unexpectedly takes Alex up on his vow, offering the future Laird of Balforss his daughter’s hand in marriage. After Lucy is rejected by a young lord. However Lucy doesn’t want to marry a Highlander.
An easy reading book with misunderstandings galore, most are simple misunderstandings but an event before the wedding results in Lucy playing into the hands of the villains. I usually prefer a more mature hero so felt both Alex & Lucy were a little naïve but both were young & both annoyed me at times. This is the first book I’ve read by the author & I’ll certainly be reading more. The characters are fairly well developed but I didn’t totally connect with them, the plot was well paced & kept my interest throughout but felt not all of the sub plots were resolved so I was left wanting more – maybe there will be another book to follow

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

First time I have read this author. I am sure I will read her again.

Typical Scot story with a sassenach and a wild Scottish highlander. Lucy got a tad on my nerves and Alex did the same. They were both very naive and didn’t believe in each other. Lucy’s back and forth was tiring, but she finally got it together. Alex very Jamie Fraser like in some ways. A true ginger with his temper and impulsiveness.

Not much hotness. So don’t look for that. There is adventure and betrayal. Overall good story.

Received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Lucy FitzHarris is a duke daughter, she lives with her father as did her mother until she died. But the duke never married her mother. Alexander Sinclair was a highlander, he had met her when they were children. His father had made arrangements with her father, so they could be married.
The descriptions were lush and gave you an idea of what to expect. The characters were fun, easy to anger but very protective. The story had humor, happy and sad parts. He helped a grandmother get her grandson into a better position. They were so honorable and kind. This story included danger, intrigue and some very nasty people. Boy, did they cause problems. I enjoyed this tale, the way they helped each other, Alex and his cousins would never turn their backs on each other, especially in a troubling situation.
I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed it.

Tying the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey is a thrilling romp through the Highlands. Alex and Lucy’s romance is achingly sweet yet a roller coaster ride to the altar. Ms. Trethewey incorporates a true historical villain to add to the depth of her story. A fun, fast read that will having laughing one second and in tears the next. Spend a few hours at Balforss; you won’t regret the visit!

I just couldn't get in to this. Sorry maybe just my mood. I have restarted it several times but can't seem to force myself to get any further.
I haven't marked it on Goodreads as I don't want to out people off as maybe it's just me.

"Tying the Scot" by Jennifer Tretheway was a satisfying read filled with love, angst and true villains. Lucy, the illegitimate daughter of an English peer, and Alex met when they were children. Alex wasn't happy to see young Lucy's brother take her toy and he rescued the toy, whooped the brother and promised Lucy's father that he would be her protector.
Lucy's father calls on Alex's father to agree to a betrothal. Lucy isn't well received by the ton due to her illegitimacy, and fell in love with a friend of her brother's who just asked another woman to marry him. Lucy is humiliated at the slight, believing the object of her affection wanted to marry her as much as she wanted to marry him. She is very unhappy with her father for arranging this betrothal, she doesn't want to live in Scotland and marry a man she's never met.
Alex agrees to the betrothal because his heart is a bit sore. He asked a woman to marry him and she turned him down flat. He remembered the incident with Lucy and decided that she would be as good as any bride. Alex wants to see how she will react to him and if they will rub along well, he decides to be in her escort party, but not reveal his identity.
I'm sure readers can figure out how well Alex's scheme will work out. This is just the first in many misunderstandings that spring up between Alex and Lucy. They do have chemistry and they work well together, when they actually talk and listen, and they both become not only resigned to the marriage, but look forward to it as well.
Then comes the true misunderstanding. The villains show up, there are a number of them, and the misunderstandings run rampant.
Only one or two sexy scenes, mildly sexy, I usually look for more heat in my favorite reads. The characters are both likable and they are good together when they finally figure out they are meant for each other.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Alex and Lucy's fathers had been friends for many years. The last time they had seen one another was when Alex was 11 and Lucy 9. At that meeting Lucy's brother was taunting her, as brothers will, and had thrown her ball into a pond. Alex retrieved her ball and defended her against her brother, bloodying his nose. When confronted by their fathers' over the altercation. Lucy now defends Alex/ In the end, Alex was disciplined but he swore to Lucy's father that he would always protect her.

Nine years later, the father's have made a match between Lucy and Alex. Lucy does not want this as she is convinced a friend of her brother's will ask to wed her but this will not happen. Lucy will never fit into society because she is illegitimate as is her brother. She hears people talk about her and it really hurts her but she thinks it may get better with a good marriage.

Lucy decides to accept the marriage, out of respect for her father, and embarks to Scotland with her dog. Alex is there to meet her with some of his men but has decided not to tell her who he is yet. He wants to get to know the real her. His men tell him this will be a mistake but he does it anyway.

The travel to Alex' home is long and dangerous as well in some areas. Not only may they have to deal with bands of English soldiers, they also must pass through unfriendly lands. They also come across a man Alex feels is an enemy, a man who burns people out of their homes to make more room for the much more profitable sheep for his landowner. It doesn't matter if they live or not. Unfortunately, Lucy learns of Alex' identity and is very an gry.

Will she forgive him and marry? Will they survive the impending danger?

There was a definite attraction between the two but their temperaments did clash. Self doubts also contributed.

I loved how she was embraced by Alex's family. She had never had a mother, as she'd died bearing Lucy. Now she did. Alex has a very fiery temper and Lucy is no shrinking violet so there is plenty of heat between these two but both of these characters are such good people. It was wonderful to see them discover each other through their actions.

Life is Scotland is much different than in England and even though Lucy is taken aback by some of the aspects of life there she absolutely blooms as a person. She finds joy through what she learns, as exhausting as it was.

Alex' relationship with a young groom was awesome, it really showed the man Alex was.

If you like your Highlanders and feisty women, then this is a book for you!

Jennifer Trethewey is a new author to me. Tying the Scot moves quickly as you read through the love story of Alex and Lucy. I found it unusual for the heroine to be raised the spoiled daughter of an English duke. She was raised knowing her father had never married her mother with her mother dying when she was young. Lucy and Alex met a children. It seemed decided during that visit the two were meant to be married. Except that they both went about their own lives until the duke made an offer to Alex of their union. Alex had been pursuing a distant cousin, Elizabeth, and Lucy had been hoping for an offer from a friend of her brothers.

As Alex self describes, he does not make the best decisions and is a bit hot-headed. Their story as adults begins with Alex making a mess of their first meeting and the trip to his home. Lucy begins to believe he may be too wild for her. Once they get past that, Lucy takes well to life in the highlands. But, then you have her former love interest send her a note and Alex’s former love interest show up for his wedding.

All in all, this is a delightful adventure of two young loves who need to learn to trust and communicate in order to make a good marriage. They get to their HEA with quite a few bumps along the way.

Spoiled Lucy, born on the wrong side of the blanket, her father is a Duke who loves her very deeply. Lucy has a brother named George, who treats her like all brothers, if he can aggravate her, he does! Their father loved their Mother very much, however, she would not marry him, she loved him too much. The Duke never married, because he loved their Mother deeply, he spoiled his children.
I absolutely fell in love with Alex, his parents, are too precious, what you always dream of , for in-laws! Lucy does have the good sense to love his parents, she just doesn't have enough sense to listen to her head, and jumps continuously to the wrong conclusions! I love Alex's cousins, great secondary characters!
I highly recommend! Thanks! Enjoy!

Tying the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey is a sexy yet irresistible tale. I couldn't stop reading it. The characters...were out of this world good. A strong hero and a strong heroine. Feisty yet smart heroine and a strong yet sexy hero that engages readers in many ways. Their arguing and playful banter teases me. Funny, sweet, and intoxicating...Jennifer Trethewey definitely knows how to write a heated romance.

It all started at the age of eleven. Alex a Highlander youth swears loyalty and protection to a young girl. He protects her against her awful teasing brother. From that day forward neither has forgotten the other one. So many years have passed, and both are grown adults now. Lucy is an English woman bred as a lady. Yet since her parents didn't wed, she can't enter the society the way her heart wanted to...her father sends her off to Scotland to marry his best friend's son, Alex.

Alex loved a woman who spurned him. His father offers him marriage to the young girl he protected a long time ago. Alex isn't sure if marriage to Lucy will work. He sets out a scheme to figure out what kind of woman she is. Only it backfires on him...

Lucy is determined to give her marriage proposal to Alex a serious reflection. However, muse didn't think he would be as handsome as he appeared nor did she think he would betray her...

Danger follows Alex and his fiancée. Threats, violence, and trouble escalates as they get to know each other.

Passion cannot be faked. Their attraction is real and addictive. Neither one can deny it. But do they really want to marry?

Tying the Scot is an adventure readers like myself won't forget. Intriguing, bold, and smoldering....Jennifer Trethewey wowed me with her world of fiction. I love historical romances and this meet my every expectation and beyond...overall, I highly recommend this novel to readers worldwide.

I promised a fair and honest review for this ARC. A lovely read. Spicy characters without a lot of heat.

Tying the Scot is a historical romance, it is generally a light story with a few suspenseful or emotional moments, and is perfect as an escapism read. The world building is very well done, Ms Trethewey builds a very believable 19th Century Scotland, but like many historicals these days, with a bit of a modern twist. Although, not historically accurate, I enjoy the current pattern of showing females characters displaying the whole range of emotion and personality; from the more humble and meek, to the strong and independent who are not afraid to voice their opinions. This modern twist makes a story that is more palatable to modern sensibilities, and let’s face it for more entertaining reading.

The characters in Tying the Scot were well developed; even if I did have a love/hate relationship with Lucy who I had keep reminding myself was still very young and had a lot of maturing to do. Alex was also impulsive and hot tempered, again showing his youth, but he and Lucy were a good match for neither of them would let the other get away with too much. The secondary characters were also well developed and the villains suitably villainous. Overall, Ms Trethewey created a world that was lush in description and populated with many varied and interesting characters.

Tying the Scot is a lovely light read, perfect for lovers of historical romance. Jennifer Trethewey is a new author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to her work.

When Alex first meets Lucy, he defends her and promises to honour and protect her. The sweet aspect of this is that Alex is 11 and Lucy only 9. However, this oath leads to her father, the Duke of Chatham and Alex’s father, a laird, arranging a marriage between them. Romance will not be an easy undertaking in this novel, with Alex pretending to be another, Lucy still pining for an English lord and kidnapping are thrown into the plot. The storyline is definitely fast paced and very entertaining.
I look forward to reading about Alex’s relatives as they proved to be an essential aspect of this story. An enjoyable read!

Tying the Scot is such a great historical romance. Loved it

Tying the Scot, by Jennifer Trethewey is an interesting historical romance between a Scottish highlander and English lady.

Alex Sinclair and Lucy FitzHarris first met as young children, and Alex pledged an oath to always protect Lucy. Shortly after their introduction, Alex returned to Scotland with his father, the Laird of Balforss, while Lucy stayed in England with family, including her father, the Duke of Chatham. Years later, Alex and Lucy's fathers arranged their marriage, yet neither are keen on the unexpected marriage.

Lucy has struggled in high society circles in London, due to her illegitimate status and inappropriate comments and gestures by her peers. However, she believes her life will be changed when she becomes a viscountess by marriage to Langley, yet he becomes engaged to another woman. Lucy is distraught and childishly refuses to move to Scotland.

Alex is hesitant to marry a woman he only met as a child, yet he realizes that this arranged wedding would be profitable to his family. Also, another woman recently refused his marriage offer, so he's determined to succeed this time. However, his brash actions and harsh words deter their initial happiness, along with Lucy's childish behavior and plenty of miscommunication.

Before the wedding occurs, Alex and Lucy deal with various issues from their behaviors, as well as family members and cruel enemies attacking and manipulating their lives. Overall, the story is slightly immature and brash, yet still interesting. Plus, there's an adorable little dog, named Hercules.

Tying the Scot is geared towards those who enjoy reading young historical romances.

A great read. Unfortunately, I can't really tell you what I like about it without spoiling the plot / ending. Suffice it to say that I think the character development was very interesting. My only criticism is that the interruptions before the characters had sex were kind of unbelievable. Once, sure, but it happened two or three times...

That's a good boy.

Oh, so are Lucy and George half-siblings?

She sounds like a priggish woman now.

Dramatic much?

As an illegitimate child, she's luckier than most in that her father actually acknowledges her.

She's taking a chance. What if Mr. Munro wasn't actually known to Alex?

Ewww. Liam is so gross, in so many ways.

Haha! The lady don't play!

He will make a good father.

Fire is a horrible way to die.

It's hilarious how they keep getting interrupted. They need their own house!

Sellar really needs to die.

She plays him like a fiddle. Their marriage is going to be fun.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
