A strong collection of stories exploring different aspects of the immigrant experience. I look forward to reading longer work by this author.

This book is an absolutely brilliant collection of short stories that take a look at the immigrant experience in North America. Touching on race, gender, religion, war, and struggle, the stories in this book will stay with you long after you close the book and give you a fresh perspective of what so many around us are experiencing.

While I was moved by all of the stories, two of them especially were poignant for me. One was about the mother who lost her son to violence in Canada, after moving there to give the family a better life. I see this story in so many people around me. The other was the story of the man living in Canada, trying to find out about his friend who is living in Syria when the civil war breaks out and also her story of how she ended up there and her attempt to leave.

I highly recommend this book. This collection of stories is unique to what is out there in the book world but are the stories of people we pass each day. It really made me stop and think about what the people around me have experienced in their lives and the journeys that they have made to a new life in Canada.
