This is a heavy read with lots of action and world building. It won’t be a fast read but it is enjoyable. Great blend of history and fantasy.

This has an interesting premise, but may not appeal to everyone. The book feels like a fairly standard fantasy, with the old familiar archetypes, only instead of the Force, this Luke Skywalker is learning a mystical form of Catholicism? The world is developed according to a medieval/modern mix where knights and sentinels and angels all mix, but many of the modern comforts exist. It's a fun take, but one that kept me distracted by all the odd details. How can the characters play Call of Duty in this world? Does it depict the same battles? Does it depict battles suited to this world? Did WWII occur, and if not, what did happen in its place? Details like that kept sticking out to me, and added to the fact that the Christian god was real, and not so infallible, I had difficulty getting into the plot. If God promised to make sure the seventh sentinel line would continue, why would He have to be reminded of this, and brought the dead baby to reanimate? I was also disappointed that the African continent had fallen to false idols, and superstitious magic, in a world where angels are doing battle and monasteries still exist.

The story felt a bit slow to get going even though the action started nearly straight away. The characters didn't endear themselves to me in the beginning. As the book went on, I started to get into the story more and found it very enjoyable.
