Stella Jackson has retreated from the world after a bitter breakup with her fiancée. On the spur of the moment, she takes a friend up on an offer to visit her in Scotland, and leaves London far behind. There she takes a job working for the enigmatic author, Jamie Munro, who insists she not reveal anything that happens at his estate, Munro House. As his assistant, Stella has access to the home’s archives and finds herself intrigued by a series of letters written by a young Victorian woman who lived in the house and was married to a doctor with the same bizarre ideas about health that Jamie is. I loved the premise for this book and wanted to like it more than I did, but Jamie was too weird and too harsh. I couldn’t see why Stella would fall for him, but then again, she seemed on the rebound after breaking up with her fiancee
