Thinking in Icons by Felix Sockwell is a fantastic reference book about the thinking behind and development of icons. Icons are a growing phenomena in marketing and creating the right kind of icon is a challenge. Felix's definitions around what the purpose is for each genre of icon is a great guide and has changed my thinking and the way I brief in icon designs and evaluate them too. There are pages of iterations and thought process but I found the perspectives and examples helpful and interesting. It's a four out of five for me and highly recommended!

Icons are everywhere around us and I enjoy and appreciate the functionality and look of well designed icons. When I saw the title of this book, I was expecting to be presented with a few good examples of Icons that have been implemented all over the world. I wanted to learn what design characteristics exactly set those successful icons apart from less successful ones. Instead, I was presented with pages and pages of sketches that were made in the brainstorming part of the design process for specific icons which did not always find approval by the customers. This book was not for me. About one third through the book I lost interest and I stopped reading.

This is an introduction for how the images and logos work in other to communicate.
It goes through the evolution of some of the most important logos and how they were created.
The book is really basic, recommend for a beginner in fields like graphic design or marketing.

I'm sure for professional graphic designers there much to learn from this, but for the casual reader it's not very interesting. A highly designed book, as one would expect, the feeling I got was of endless variations of similar designs, executed in a similar style.

I was hoping for more.
