This book is great for anyone interested in really drilling down into the African American experience as a story "listener" of the African American voice. Sounds abstract; give it a chance. By really analyzing classic African American literature, poetry and even songs, the reader learns how to assess the cultural experience being shared through storytelling. I believe that this methodology can be applied to other cultural writings. In some respects, the book connects to the idea of semiotics by breaking down the writing from the perspective of what the reader listens to (not just hears). Hence, story "listening" to storytelling.

In a time when listening to each other really matters, especially when trying to understand cultures and experiences not our own, this book helps provide tools to better understand, or at least empathize, with each other.
Full disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from www.NetGalley.com. I only request books that I might find interesting.

This is an exceptional exploration of how educators can better delve into Black texts to promote cultural, social, and political engagement with the use of listening as an approach to reading!
