REVIEW: "THAT KILLER SMILE" (Bite Nights) by Juliet Lyons
FORMAT: Kindle Edition
PUBLICATION DATE: February 6, 2018
GENRE: Paranormal Romance
REVIEW BY: Noetical
RATING: 5/5 Stars
POV: Dual alternating H/h first-person

"THAT KILLER SMILE" by Juliet Lyons is another excellent book in the Bite Nights Series. In the first two books of the series, we learn that vampire Catherine Adair and London's Vampire Overlord, Ronin McDermott, have a past. In this book, we discover what that past entails. Unlike the first two books, neither character is human, which allows for a much more in-depth and complex history and characterization of both. The alternating dual first-person POV provides an intimate view into the fears and insecurities each must surmount to find their happily ever after. Their surrender was that much sweeter for having overcome a bitter and painful past.
The publisher provided a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. However, I enjoyed it so much that I purchased my own copy from Amazon when it came out.

SEXUAL CONTENT: Suitable for people 18 and older. Several scenes of hot M/F vampire sex, mostly within the context of a relationship. Some explicit sexual activity depicted without being excessive or crude.
VIOLENCE: A few scenes with vampire-related blood and gore. Backstory alludes to rape and abuse with some graphic detail.
PROFANITY: About 80 instances of a few different bad words occur in the story. However, it blends within the storyline, such that none of the characters seem crude.
HUMOR: I laughed out loud several times.
ENDING: Satisfying HEA without a cliffhanger. Ties up most outstanding threads from earlier books in series.

This was the first book I read by Juliet Lyons. She is an excellent author. I loved the story. It kept me interested throughout. I will be reading the other books in this series for sure. This is not your typical vampire story. Lots of different "rules" in this vampire world.

Where has this series been all my life? :) I loved Cat and Ronin--such fantastic chemistry; I can't wait to go back to the first two books and see how they were from the beginning. It'll be all that much sweeter knowing how they're going to end up!

I really liked the world that Ms. Lyons has created here in her Bite Nights series. She does a nice of job explaining the details too, without giving us crazy info dumps. There's a good balance of suspense, mystery, and romance here, and I loved how she really made both Cat and Ronin work for the HEA they eventually create. (Though, quick question--what's up with the dark hair on the cover model? Ronin's supposed to be a redhead...)

That Killer Smile is the third book in the series, but worked just fine as a standalone..."just fine" translating into "OMG, I need to read the first two books ASAP!" of course.

Along with a great story and fabulous characters, we also learn a very important dating lesson here from Wentworth (Cat's cat)--if your cat doesn't like him, dump his sorry butt, people! ;)

Rating: 4 stars / A-

Wow! Let me start off by saying Wow! Juliet Lyons is amazing! She knows how to keep her readers interested and engaged in her books. The reader is transported into a wonderful world of the adventure, romance, as well as steamy love encounters. The action in the book is non-stop. There is never a dull moment between the heroine and the hero. The sexual tension between the two will leave you trying to figure out what you missed but slowly it is explained, and you will find yourself going, “If, it was me in Cat’s shoes then Ronin would be in a shallow unmarked grave!”
You get to see into the mind of this great writer and you keep wondering when you will get to read more of her work. The action-packed chapters, the different point of views from the mind of Juliet Lyons, the wonderful way the words flow to the page. You just keep wanting to turn the page wanting more. The dynamic between the characters even if they aren’t the main ones is so believable and real that you forget that you have things to do in the real world that you can’t keep putting off no matter how great the book is.

Cat Adair is the founder of V-Date.com, a London-based dating service that connects humans with vampire dates. Business is far from booming after a vampire serial killer used the site to find his victims in the previous book. It gets even worse when the local vampire club starts hosting speed-dating nights.

Ronin McDermott is the owner of that club and London’s “vampire overlord,” the ancient in charge of keeping the undead in line. He’s been a mysterious and menacing character in the first two books of the series. I was hoping to find out more about him and the mythology surrounding the ancients, the only ones who can turn new vampires. We do, in fact, learn about where the ancients come from as well as meet Esme, the ancient in charge of New York in this book. (I suspect she might also be the lead character if there’s a book four.) But I was a little bit disappointed at how much of the menace Ronin’s lost.

However, I’m a sucker for an enemies-to-lovers story. I was so excited at the end of the first chapter when I realized how much Cat hated Ronin. And it’s not just because of the speed dating. Their banter and their chemistry did not disappoint! Just like in the previous books in the series, there’s also a murder mystery. This time since the victims are vampires, Ronin’s in charge of solving of it.

That Killer Smile is set at least a year after the previous book in the series. It would work well as a standalone since the characters from the other books are mentioned, but don’t play a major role in the story. However, it does summarize what happened to them at the end of their books, so there would be some spoilers. I’m about to tell you what happened here too, so skip the last paragraph if you don’t want to know.

Often in vampire romances, the human partner has to become a vampire to get their HEA. This series has switched it up by turning the vampire characters human. Even though I appreciate that it defies expectations, the idea that their previous lives weren’t good enough made me a little uncomfortable. I was hoping that since Ronin is an ancient, his story would be different. And it is to some extent, since Ronin was never human so couldn’t change back. But there’s still a sense that Cat and Ronin have to change to earn their HEAs that I could have done without.

I really like this author. She has a very distinct voice that resonates with some edgy humor. I enjoyed this book though it’s not my normal genre. I’ll definitely be looking into the rest of this series.

Ronin sees someone that looks like her-Cat- but it isn’t her. Ronin is a very old vampire and a Scottish Overlord. Ronin starts a new thing at his club a couple times a week - speed dating with vampires. Cat had clients leaving her business. The last one Belinda says she is trying new- speed dating with vampires. Cat has rn a vampire dating site for five years but already this week she had ten people cancel. Belinda mentioned her safety of Vdate that a vampire had used the site a few years ago and women were murdered. Ronin was an ancient demon and the last person Cat had sex with. Cat called Ronin up and told Ronin she called because she had heard the nasty rumors he was spreading. Ronin said he was sorry to remind her but if she meant the rumors about a serial killer using her site to find victims they were mostly true. Cat would like to forget her past with Ronin. Cat may hate Ronin but they have a hot chemistry between them. Ronin realized something was missing from his life and Cat was it. Cat had spent a long time putting defenses up and could Ronin really break through her defenses. Also Ronin needs to find out who is killing vampires while trying to win Cat.
I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the plot. At times I chuckled and at other times I choked up while reading this book. I loved the action. I loved Mrs Colcornelo who was a master at eavesdropping. I enjoyed the humor in this book. I loved Cat and Ronin together I advise you to read the other books in this series in order to bring everything together. I enjoyed how a mystery was put in this book. I really loved the ending. This was an easy enjoyable rollercoaster ride of a romance. I really liked the the characters and the twists and turns of this book and I recommend

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

This is not your typical vampire book with typical vampire beliefs. These vampires can walk in the sun, eat food, and cannot create another vampire unless they are an ancient.

Ronin was not a likeable guy to me at first, and I really wondered what Cat saw in him when they first met. Ronin started to change after their second meeting and slowly grew on me.

It was interesting that the vampire murders were tied in with Cat and the whole reason behind it was unexpected and kind of crazy.

I loved the ending that Cat really had to examine her life and parts of her past, and that Ronin really cared enough for Cat that he would sacrifice for her. Great HEA but wish there was a bit more! I was not ready for the story to be over!

THAT KILLER SMILE was a fun and sexy read! It is the third book in Juliet Lyons paranormal series, the Bite Nights Series, but can be read as a standalone. The series is about a dating service for vampires and humans and in Juliet Lyon's frictional world humans are aware of vampires. THAT KILLER SMILE was just a fun read and I enjoyed the characters. I recommend this series for paranormal lovers looking for a fun vampire series.

Enemies to Lovers, Online Vampire Dating and a tratorious cat.

Always trust the cat’s judgment of people.

Catherine Adair, a 185 year old vampire with an identity crisis
Ronin McDermott, vampire/demon overlord of London
Wentworth, Catherine’s traitorous cat

Catherine feels that Ronin is interfering with her business. She runs an online dating application allowing humans to hook up with vampires. Ronin is offering speed dating at his club. She goes to his office to voice her displeasure with his actions and the sparks fly. And fly. And fly. There is lots of witty banter between these two. I didn’t see the curve coming at the end. The book came to a satisfying conclusion. I loved that the heroine rescues herself from a perilous situation. Once I got used to the British references, it was an enjoyable read.

Wild, exciting, witty banter and lots of smexy times. This was book 3 in the Bite Nights series, but I never felt lost.

I really liked this one! Cat and Ronin were likeable strong, definitive characters. Cat was holding on to her past and Ronin was trying to fight the feeling he had for her and realized why fight it? He then sets a plan in motion to capture her attention and ultimately her heart. Ronin was a great hero for Catherine and I was overjoyed when they finally got their HEA. Filled with murder and suspense, I truly enjoyed this read. I do love Ms. Lyons style of writing as well. A great read! 4 stars.

Quirky, snarky, funny, sexy, sweet, thrilling and emotionally engaging second chance, enemies to lovers romance with a paranormal twist (my favorite). Bite Nights is one of my favorite series to read and this story just took it up a notch.

Catherine Adair is sexy, sweet, quirky and fun founder of London's super successful Vampire dating site. She gave up on finding her perfect mate ages ago and did not expect the sparks that fly when a smoldering vampire overlord from her past becomes competition. Ronin McDermott is a sexy, arrogant, alpha male and vampire overlord that opens a new interspecies speed-dating service purely to get Catherine's attention after the way she brushed him off years ago. Highly entertaining romantic adventure filled with passion.

That Killer Smile is an interesting vampire romance. As it relates to the vampire community, the story departs from what I consider traditional vampire lore in a couple of ways. These vamps aren't harmed by the sun, unless newly changed. Also, while many enjoy drinking blood, it didn't seem a requirement for sustainability.

For the romance, this is no Edward /Bella remake. Both main characters have lived through unimaginable loss and suffering. Yet, from the moment they meet each other there's a feeling that lets them know that their heart's can live again. It’s not all sunshine and roses, but it's an engrossing read and a wonderful HEA.

If you like vampire tales, it’s hard to go wrong with this one.

I received an ARC of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
