This book is another in the Big Nate comic series. In this one, Nate Wright is in middle school and he is finding that at times, it can just plain stink. Or is that because of his alter-ego Great Nose-ini?!

'Big Nate: Silent But Deadly' by Lincoln Peirce is the 18th (!) volume in the series of comics about mischief maker Big Nate.

This time around, Big Nate breaks in a new kid in detention. He also runs a campaign to be Student of the Month, and tries to convince teachers and fellow students. My favorite series in this collection might be his upscale movie reviews for the school newspaper.

This is a fun series, and it has stayed consistently funny, even if the main character is old enough to have graduated high school by now.

The nineteenth book in the laugh-out-loud-often Big Nate comic collection series finds everyone's favorite sixth-grader dealing ever more with bossy schoolteachers, disagreeing friends, and even his arch-rival Gina, the school suck-up who gets great grades and epitomizes "teacher's pet" - and the one fellow student Nate wants to take down most, even to the point of calling her out, in class, in relation to the title of this collection (ahem). In this one Nate also helps to school a detention newbie, shows off his almost supernatural sense of smell, shreds the egos of a couple teachers as a reporter for the school paper, and even hosts a battle of wits between Gina and his best friend Francis called the Fact Town Smackdown. Another witty, funny collection featuring Big Nate taking down the establishment, even when they get some good, mostly-deserved licks in on the kid themselves. 4/5 stars

NOTE: I received a free ARC of this title from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first ‘Big Nate’ read. Nate is a sixth grader who is well acquainted with detention. In this collection, Nate wants to be an undercover reporter for ‘The Bugle’. He also assists the school picture day photographer and discovers that students aren’t the only ones flashing their pearly whites.

Nate decides he wants to win the Student of the Month award, to the amusement of his long suffering teachers. Gina and Francis face off in the Fact Town Smackdown, which ends with a cliffhanger.

Outside of school, Nate goes trick or treating, exchanges Christmas presents with his family and attempts to hide his report card from his father. He also surprises his father by doing some gardening. Sort of.

I had no idea who was who before I started reading but I got a sense of each characters’ personality within this collection. While Nate annoyed me in the beginning, he began to grow on me towards the end of the collection. If I kept reading this series I think my favourite character would end up being one of Nate’s classmates rather than Nate himself, but I can see why kids would enjoy this series.

The comics were a mixed bag for me; some made me chuckle and others made me wish I was reading ‘Peanuts’ instead. I understood the pop culture references but only because I’m old; I doubt kids would have even heard of ‘Magnum P.I.’.

“These strips appeared in newspapers from October 6, 2013, through March 29, 2014.”

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this graphic novel. I’m rounding up from 3.5 stars.

You know those little "f" bombs that sneak up on you when you least expect it, then "poof" they make themselves known, catching you unaware. That's what Lincoln Peirce does in his latest comic edition, Big Nate: Silent but Deadly, where the jokes catch you off guard, not quietly this time, but with a force which causes an explosive, deafening laugh that the reader can't quite hold in.

It's 6th grade (again) for Nate and his friends (there's even an inside joke about an endless loop of repeating sixth grade, over and over!) and they are at it again with Nate combating his nemesis, teacher Mrs Godfrey, and trying to find ways to outsmart teacher's pet & know-it-all Gina, such as a Fact Town Smackdown between her and Francis. Of course Nate and his friends are rooting for Francis - "You're a geek, but your OUR geek!" With a look at Detention (Note on pass given to Nate: The Usual), Class Picture Day (Where Mr Galvin is asked to show us his teeth, and his dentures accidentally fall out - Response: "These scientists are so literal."), and Romance (Gina has a crush on Chad whose C.Q. - Cuteness Quotient - is off the charts). Holidays are a hoot, from Halloween to Christmas (After taking Nate to buy a present for his sister, his dad quips - "And this is why gift cards were invented."), to a Monopoly Marathon on New Year's Eve playing by Nate's Rules.

School is in the fun zone and there's lots of chuckles when Nate attempts to be Student of the Month, interviews a teacher for the school paper, and finds himself outmatched at a school basketball game. Chad is able to outsmart a bully by opening Nate's locker, knocking the jerk over with all the junk unexpectedly spewing out. Nate's retort: "I might have to start charging a user's fee."

Nate's talents as the Great Nose-Ini are explored as well as his ability to irk all the adults leaving them shaking their heads and lamenting, "I hate my life", with even the Principal wondering "If could trade jobs with another" once he's done dealing with Nate.

The one two punch of each cartoon is enhanced by the descriptive illustrations with facial expressions, or lack thereof, lifting the comedy up to the next level.

To sum it up is the line - "He's confusing me." To which I respond "Welcome to my world." But in a good way.

Four stars and a thank you to Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Big Nate series lends perfectly for some mommy son reading time and is a huge favourite of my 12 year old son. As with the other books, Big Nate: Silent But Deadly was an entertaining read, funny, lighthearted and perfectly penned for its young reading audience. Although I found some of the scenes to be silly, my son loved them and roared with laughter. All in all another great read!

Big Nate: Silent but Deadly was written by Lincoln Peirce. I was very excited about the opportunity to read this book because my oldest daughter is a big fan of the Big Nate comic strip and I knew that she would be interested in reading it too.

Nate is an average American boy who goes to elementary school. He has somewhat of a contentious relationship with teachers and administrators, and he has friends and adversaries within the school community. He’s a bright boy, but he doesn’t like to do schoolwork, which is something most children can empathize with. He plays sports, and interacts with his family.

My daughter thinks that Big Nate is very funny, and this is one of her favorite comic strips. One thing that she pointed out to me was that one of the characters moved away in another book, but she has not moved away in this book. So, even though this book was published more recently, the range of strips appears to be earlier than some of the other books. This didn’t affect her enjoyment, but it’s something she noticed right away.

I would recommend Big Nate: Silent but Deadly to middle grade readers. Big Nate is a cute comic strip, and I think it’s one that elementary school students would enjoy. This is just a collection, so readers don’t have to read any of the other Big Nate books before this one. My daughter is already looking forward to more Big Nate collections, so she will be re-reading her other books while waiting for the next book.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.

My 9 year old son grabbed this from the library the moment was available and loved every second of it. He's a fast reader, so he goes through these books quickly but the peals of laughter are always worth downloading the next book in the series. He often will read his favorite jokes aloud to his dad or sister, making this a series I know he'll go back for time and again.

I've tried to read one book from the Big Nate series before, but I don't know why I didn't like and finished it. I thought that would be the first and last time that I would have the chance to read any book from this famous graphic novel series. However, when I saw that there's an available ARC of the latest book, I grabbed the chance to check if it would change my view. And compared to the previous book in the series that I've read, which I can't remember the title, this latest installment is much better and funnier.

Although it is meant for middle-grade readers, young adults and even older readers will love the comic panels and banters among the characters. Reading this change my opinion about this comic series and I would definitely check the previously released books of Big Nate.

Nate is navigating middle school as best he can. He helps the rookies in detention but can't really find his way as an investigative reporter. His noisy stomach disrupts the class, but his work as the Great Nose-ini, sniffing out potential food allergens, helps save lives. He is a loyal if annoying friend, even if he isn't really Student of the Month material. But most of all, Nate keeps things interesting.

Big Nate: Silent But Deadly is a collection of the Big Nate comics that takes you from Halloween through Groundhog Day, showing all the crazy adventures of Nate and his classmates and friends. It's a fun and entertaining collection for middle graders on up, celebrating the best of childhood as well as the challenges of sixth grade.

Cartoonist Lincoln Peirce uses his clever cartoons to entertain us while reminding us what it's like to be a kid. I loved Big Nate: Silent But Deadly, and I recommend it to anyone who needs a smile, no matter what your age.

Galleys for Big Nate: Silent But Deadly were provided by Andrews McMeel Publishing through NetGalley, with many thanks.

This is another solid Big Nate collection. The issues he deals with seem fairly timeless, and our students relate to him well.

In this graphic novel, Nate appoints himself School Picture Guy’s official assistant, campaigns for Student of the Month, and is a cowboy for Halloween. The joke referenced in the title only appears in one frame. The book stays true to the character and will not disappoint Big Nate fans.

Thank you to Net Galley for a free copy of this book in trade for an honest review.

Ooh…wow…this is a funny, cute, witty read. It’s my first book of Big Nate and I totally L.O.V.E it. Honestly, I’m having another bad day because my client haven’t paid my fee. So, I landed with a Big Nate book this afternoon, courtesy of Net Galley and feel a bit better. There are some part that I really need to laugh because it’s so funny and logical.

Nate is obviously a smart and creative kid. He has the right answers for everything. In my country, they would call this type of kid naughty and unruly. It really gives the parents headache. Living in a place where you are expected to be perfect, it might be strange to read something like this.

The funny thing is, his best friends can’t actually stand him but they know sometimes he made sense. What I like is his interactions with the adults. The answers he gave them are smart, funny and somehow rings too much of truth we adults don’t want to hear. For example: what’s Mrs. Godfrey New Year’s wish? Losing weight! And he got send to the headmaster for being honest.

The story obviously made you want to get back into childhood again (minus the school drill of course). I have to admit, I’m quite impressed that a sixth grader could answer things logically like Nate. Some of the characters are also quite familiar. There are the popular kid who everybody loves, the cool guy, the bully, the nerd who knows everything and the regular kid.

Love the illustration style. It’s simple with solid lines and bright colors. It’s suitable for kids. The expressions of the characters are also comical and very expressive.

Recommend for those who loves to laugh, need an uplifting from a bad day, like comic books with solid color illustration and funny characters.

This is hilarious! A comic style book that anyone would enjoy! Simple to read. Nate is funny, crazy and too smart. He is often punished in school but he doesn't mind. He annoys people around him yet he's innocent at times. Expect a loud and lively laughter from the book.

This is my first Big Nate. I wish I had the chance to read it earlier. Some panels are not that funny but I enjoy reading this detention expert's daily life. If I am not mistaken Nate has his novel version. Let's see if it is as witty as its comic.

I really do love these books. I can see why Big Nate would be a hit with kids, and even adults. He's just such a smart alec kid and you kind of want to slap him, but his friends and classmates are always there to take him down a peg. It's endearing, and always funny.
