When Abbie’s family’s farm is attacked, she joins the soldier who shows up to assist her. After the farm is destroyed he takes her to a shelter in town.
This was a good story. I liked both Abbie and Matthew. My one issue was how quickly they slept with each other with out any kind of declaration of love or promise of marriage. In the era this book is set, that would’ve been basically a necessity.

Abigail is a young woman who's family farm is under attack. A small group of soldiers comes to her rescue. When the attack proves deadly to her parents and the house burns down she is forced to accept help from Mathew one of the soldiers. When Mathew himself becomes injured Abigail brings him home where they can start a new life together.

I liked the premise of When You Love a Scotsman and it had an interesting setting, too! But I guess Westerns aren't my thing. Unfortunately, the story and romance itself couldn't keep me interested enough so I had to DNF this book at 54%.

The setting is the Missouri Ozarks late in the Civil War for this second in the Seven Brides for Seven Scotsman series. Matthew MacEnroy, a Union Army lieutenant and his men while being chased by Rebel marauders take refuge in the Jenson farm. Unfortunately Abigail Jenson's parents are killed in the scrimmage and her home set on fire. Thus begins Abby and Matt's story. It takes some twists and turns, and danger, but in the end they have found each other. I have read just about all of Hannah Howell's books. I can't say that this one is among my favorites, however I do not think she can write a mediocre book. She certainly one of my favorite authors. When You Love a Scotsman is a must read for her fans.

Lovely book..Abigail was a feisty young lady with a big heart. I don't know if I could have been as strong as she was.thought the story moved fast joining Matthew and Abby.

I couldn't finish this book. I tried several times to get into it and it just wasn't happening for me.

I would have bet money on this being the author's first book. Reading it, it felt like it was being written in a monotone. Conversations between characters didn't flow smoothly. Everything felt disjointed and stilted. No one seemed to feel or have any emotions - about anything.

I didn't give damn about any of the characters. They felt completely one-dimensional. The heroine loses her mother and father in the first few pages of the book and I didn't care then and I never ended up caring. When the soldiers left the house with the heroine, I KNEW that she was going willingly but I couldn't tell from reading it if they were forcing her or if she wanted to go.

I also thought this would be about Scotsmen in Scotsland. Not Scotsmen in the United States back in the Civil War time. I hate war movies and I hate war books and this is smack dab in the middle of the Civil War. How did I not know this? I guess it isn't very clear in the description where or when this book takes place. Had I known, I would have definitely skipped this one.

I don't know. I feel bad for reviewing a book so harshly. This author worked long and hard on this. She's obviously popular since she's written a bunch of books but I just couldn't do this one. The writing was awful and the characters weren't believable.

Matthew MacEnroy rescues Abigail Jenson from Civil War marauders and thus begins an attraction that ends with their HEA. . . but not before they each face dangerous situations, both together and apart. There is the right amount of tension throughout, leaving the reader wondering what will happen to Matthew, to Abigail, and to their friends or fellow soldiers. As the Civil War draws to its end, it is no less hazardous for both civilians and soldiers and there is believable doubt as to who will survive and who won’t. I preferred "When You Love a Scotsman" to the first novel in this series, "The Scotsman Who Saved Me." My only complaint is that the dialogue in this novel often felt stilted and did not flow smoothly. Maybe this was intended to represent a more formal way of speaking appropriate to the 1860s, but to my ear it didn’t ring true.

Good, solid story. It took a bit to get into it, but once I did I really enjoyed it. I normally don't read this time period so that was a nice change of pace. It was just missing that extra spark for me to give it five stars.

I enjoyed this book. It was an easy read although I felt it to be a little predictable. But historical romance is like my favorite genre so I am not complaining!

Another of those MacEnroy brothers finds his match in Abigail against the conflict of American Civil War. Enjoying these characters as their stories unwind through out the pages.

I liked the characters in this book, particularly Abigail. Some parts of the story seemed to drag and I struggled with finishing it, but I am glad Ibdid.

What I liked about this book is the feeling that I was there, there during the war, there in the time period, living the fear and the drama of the time. Abagail and Matthew were real and the world that we were shown as their lives was a living breathing thing. Ms. Howell as usual has outdone herself with her words and her feelings that shine bravely and brightly throughout this book. I understood where Matthew was coming from, not wanting to necessarily join the war but was more forced to. I understood the attraction between the two. I felt their interaction on a personal level.

I really enjoyed this book. I always enjoy Hannah's books. I look forward to more in this series and hopefully some more highlander books.

I love the Seven Brides for Seven Scotsmen series. Each book is so unique and nothing like the other book to the series. The Author Hannah Howell has always specialized in robust characters that draw the readers into the story and this book is no exception. Filled with rich details of the surroundings and scenes one feels like they are back in time.

Matthew is certainly an interesting male character. His heart is a peaceful one and I find it quite rewarding how he survives the civil war as a Lieutenant with his beliefs intact.

Abigail's character is rich and robust. A woman that draws the reader into the story by her strength and ability to be strong no matter what. The author does a superb job of showing her weaknesses without making her weak.

There are many characters in this book each one is fully developed and interesting making a delightful read for all readers. But by far my favorite one is precocious Noah who is four years old going on eighty. He adds the much needed humor to this otherwise serious book. And what I mean by serious is the fact it takes place during the civil war where so many people are lost. He caused me to laugh out loud many times throughout the book and I would love to see what type of man he grows up to be.

I give this 5 STARS for being so well written.

I just didnot like this book. Maybe its because its not a time period I usually read about. I found this story very depressing. It takes place during the Civil War. Of course there was alot of death and suffering during the war and that is reflected in this book. I read the book because of the author. She has written some of my most favorite Scottish stories. This just isnt one of them.

I really enjoyed Abigail and Matthew's story! Abigail was pretty much a b@d@$$ and was able to pretty much take care of herself, but that din't mean she didn't want a little help now and again. I really enjoyed Matthew and watching his emotions as he decided his feeling for Abigail.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and I'm wondering which brother it will feature!!

The closer to the end, the more the story speed up. Quite a huge gap in the timeline, but it works out

This was a magnificent story and I honestly just couldn’t contain my love for this story and most especially the built up of the plot. It starts out pretty intensely where we see Abigail lose her parents and is rescued by a handsome soldier. A soldier that ends up taking her to a safe haven. A haven where his unit is stationed in the same town as Abigail’s. Matthew begins to slowly court Abigail, because he feels a strong connection to Abigail and wants to see where it can lead. Especially in seeing the way his older brother found his happiness in his new family. But there is danger around them, and Abigail and Matthew are drawn together by a certain set of circumstances and they act on those peaceful moments that are rare.

There were many aspects of this story that I truly adored. This has some endearing qualities that only a reader sees in a Hannah Howell book. I truly had a true connection to pretty much every character in this book Of course, we have our main couple here who on their own as individuals, and are majestic when they are together. They really balance each other in certain ways and I loved their chemistry. They have the same goals and I liked that they just fit so right for one another and their love story is one you can slowly ease yourself into. But then we have some other side characters that were heartbreaking at times and sweet and pretty hilarious in other moments. I LOVED the kids in this book, most especially Noah. He was such a darling little boy, who had lost so much but still had a sense of innocence and charm and was always getting into trouble.

I had only one major issue which probably won’t be a surprise to many of you who know my certain obsessions when it comes to historical romance. In this book, what I couldn’t stand was how quick these two have sex. Yes, it happens VERY quickly, way faster than I would have preferred. And quite honestly, it just had too much of a modern feel to it. Honestly, this would never have happened back in this time period. Mostly because of the risks involved and back in this era, marriage happened before becoming intimate. That is just how the culture and society worked even in the worst of circumstances. So it just didn’t feel right when these two just happen to jump into bed together or whereever they could get themselves alone and they aren’t the only couple that we see this happen. But the author did make an effort to show how society did frown upon these actions but Abigail and Matthew tended to be way too careless in my opinion and I just couldn’t truly be okay with this in a historical romance where certain expectations weren’t something you messed with.

However I truly enjoyed this story overall, there was so many thrills and adventures and this author takes us on the realistic views of how the Civil War was and how it divided family and left hundreds of women and children without parents or families or homes. I can’t wait for book three in this endearing family of seven Scottish brothers.

Abigail Jenson has had enough. Soldiers have already taken most of what is precious to her and she is not going down without a fight this time. Fortunately, some daring Scots come to her aid. Still, with her home a loss, Abigail must leave it behind and seek out a new shelter.

Matthew MacEnroy lends help to a woman who is all alone and means to move on. Fate has other plans though and Matthew finds himself remaining at Abigail's side. They must journey to his home and the road is loaded with danger. The more time Matthew spends with Abigail, the more he comes to care for her. Could Abigail ever return his affection?

I'm a big fan of author Hannah Howell. She is one of my favorite historical romance writers. Her characters and plots are always very driven and inspiring. Her latest novel, WHEN YOU LOVE A SCOTSMAN, is just okay for me, however. No offense to her writing, but this just isn't a favorite time period of mine. I took a chance on it and it is entertaining. Readers who love the war time or historicals centering around America are sure to enjoy WHEN YOU LOVE A SCOTSMAN.
