Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book. Unfortunately I have been unable to get into it.

A slow starting fantastical adventure. It was great to read into the contemporary life of modern Hawai. Each character felt like a person rather than a mere archetype. The use of Hawaii gods and demigods make the book a breath of fresh air amongst so many books with fairies, Greek gods, and Arthurian legends.

Fire In The Ocean by K.D. Keenan
Releases February 27th, 2018
Publisher:

I was given this title through, on behalf of the publisher, in exchange for my honest review.

I really liked this book. It was very different from my usual YA pick. Also, it had some really cool details on the Hawai'ian lifestyle and cultures. Right from the start the book has a dictionary if you will, to help out with the words used in the writing. The characters were very layered and unique in each their own ways.
We have Sierra, she is Clancys' fiance. Chaco and Fred are like her, but different. Clancy, is Sierras' fiance, and he is like super sweet and understanding. Chaco is a friend of Sierras, he is also an avatar. And Fred is a friend as well, he is completely unique!! They call him a Mannegishi, he can disappear becoming invincible.
Sierra discovers her powers during an earlier battle against Aztec God- Necocyaotl. She gets help from a friend, Rose, with strengthening her control over her powers.

She leaves for Hawaii with Chaco, and apparently Fred as a stow away. Unfortunately she realizes Chaco not doing so well, he tells it is not sickness that he has lost his powers. This means he is human and can die, and won't have his usual abilities.
Once reaching the hotel, she decides the next day they will leave. Chaco tells her to stay, so they go on a whale tour, since she has three more days until having to go to midway and work on the project. During the tour they spot something unusual, the captain announces it is a fair-weather spout. Usually they don't last, but this one seemed to follow the boat. During that time, nobody was paying mind to her or Chaco as they were swept off the boat by a large mystical, like octopus. Could her powers alone save them? Would they make it to find land? Or even make it home?

A new and wonderful adventure for me, sure to be for others as well. The writing is amazing and; the magic, and the world-building is incredible!!! I loved the book and loved the writing style. I especially loved the Culture references to Hawai'ian people. Just a simply fun and amazing adventurous book.

Summary: Sierra and her friends come face to face with Hawaiian gods and deal with an ecological disaster waiting to happen.

What I liked: As I didn't know a lot about any mythology I enjoyed learning about some of the mythology and gods of Hawaii. There were some interesting aspects of the story. Keenan's writing is very good and the characters are well fleshed out. The cover of the novel is stunning.

What I didn't like: The plot for me was really slow. The synopsis of the book made me think that it was going to be faster paced then the story actually was. I didn't particularly enjoy the story.

Star Rating: 4

My thoughts: Even though I didn't particularly care for the story line and the pace of the story, Fire in the Ocean was well written and the characters are well fleshed out.
