I enjoyed reading this book. The first part of the book is a month by month look at life on the Blueberry farm. The text is accompanied with beautiful photographs. Each chapter is what one can expect to happen on the farm. The progress of the plants, the wildlife, the work needed, and the name of the moon. The second part of the book is more technical with information on the plants, wildlife, family history and of course blueberry recipes. The book is easy read and the photographs are wonderful. Anyone with a interest in nature and armchair traveling will enjoy this book

Out in Blue Fields by Janice Riley and Stephen Spear covers a Year at Hokum Rock Blueberry Farm. The first half of the book is a month by month account of life on the farm. The second half is full of blueberry recipes. Blueberries are a big crop in my part of the country. It was fascinating to read about blueberry farming in a different area. The pictures were lovely and just as wonderful as the information!

If you're into growing blueberries, this will be the go-to book for you. Revolving around one family's adventure in blueberry farming, the book goes through the year month by month and explains blueberry growing/farming in details.
It also felt like reading bundled blog posts, as the pictures were great and writing was nice and casual.
There is also blueberry recipes in the end, so if you know someone passionate about blueberries, this will make the perfect gift!

The first half of this lovely book comprises a year-long essay on conservation, blueberry farming, and life at Cape Cod's Hokum Rock Blueberry Farm. While I enjoyed the month by month accounting of the arduous work of farming, I was most struck by the cautionary tale provided by the estate-hold the Spear family has on Hokum Rock Blueberry Farm. Having sold their land to the city for long-term conservation purposes, while retaining life estate tenancy, the town, proper owners of the land, refused to aid the Spear's in protecting the land from unscrupulous development by neighbors who cut down a large stand of pine and oak trees, many of which were more than a hundred years old. When you see what love and labor have gone into the farm, the town's refusal to aid the Spear family is really disheartening.

The second half of this book focuses on family history, blueberry growing tips, various plants and insects found on the farm, and a host of yummy-looking recipes using blueberries.

All in all, this is a truly beautiful book. It releases March 27th, 2018.

Please note that this review is scheduled to publish on my blog at 10:20 PM March 26th, 2018.

This book is filled with everything Blueberry. It has tons of stunning pictures. Yes stunning and blueberries do not always go together when speaking of photos but in this case they do. There are pictures of the flowers before the berry forms, there are pictures of the bushes covered in snow, and there are pictures of the farm with the amazing backdrop of the forest behind it.

The book chronicles a year of cultivating blueberries on Cape Cod's Hokum Rock Farm. Stephen Spear's family has owned the Hokum Rock Farm since 1973 and began cultivating blueberries exclusively in 1986, selling thousands of pints each season.

Along with the photos is the history of cultivation, an autobiography, thoughts, feelings, and so much more. You get an in depth look at the family and of blueberries, and my favorite part recipes.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

A great book about Cape Cod's Hokum Rock Farm. I loved how it was part autobiography and part conservation and why we need farming. Breathtaking photos really help tell the story.
