Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for allowing me to preview this book. This is a fun cookbook for those who are camping out, or camping in the backyard. Sounds delicious!

I enjoyed reading these recipes although I'm not a camper. That said, I would be even more hesitant to try some of them while camping out without practicing at home because some recipes seem more involved. The pictures were beautiful and the recipes are mouth-watering and I might just have a night where I "camp" at home.

The Campout Cookbook is a light- hearted look at camping. It has directions to use Dutch ovens and cast iron pans. The book also explains what the difference is between them. There is a chapter on different games that can be played. For example 20 questions, and other games like that. Are you worried that you won't know what to do in case of an emergency? This book will help you for whatever type of emergency you are having from not being able to start a fire to how to hear proof your camp.
If good food is a top priority, there are recipes from alcoholic drinks to dog treats that can be made while camping. The book also offers its readers how to identify poisonous plants, which is a great help for those who never have been camping. My favorites are the smore, melt, board and pancake recipes.
I recommend this book for both new and seasoned campers.

This book was so much fun! So much more than just a cookbook, it had everything from healthy, delicious looking recipes to tips on virtually every aspect of camping! As an avid longtime (& sometimes full-time) camper myself it was great to see so many little helpful tidbits for those just heading out into the woods as well as some awesome ideas for our next trip out.

So much more informative than any camping cookbook I've seen - Humourous and inspirational stories and tidbits like 12 different ways to make a s'more and a huge list of delicious sounding pancake toppers. Helpful tips about foraging, pets, wildlife, fun illustrations, even car games & fun for the kids!

Fabulous book and beautiful cover - Highly recommended for both new and longtime campers!

Some familiar favorites (chili, biscuits, fried fish) and some new ideas (jello shots, cinnamon rolls, and Mexican recipes.) Relatively complicated recipes make me think this is for a cook that doesn't mind spending most of their day in camp in the camp kitchen, and kids aren't involved, or the kids are willing to eat "adult" food. While everyone is canoeing and hiking, the cook is kneading dough, etc. If you expect meals that are quick and pre-prepared, this isn't the cookbook, but wow, these recipes are mouthwatering, inventive and I'd love to bring someone along to prepare these meals while I"m having fun at camp. Since that's not going to happen, I'm cooking them in my kitchen. At home. Favorites: Chorizo Skillet Nachos (ahhhhh, so good!) Figgy Pecan Crackers and whipped feta. Surprisingly easy! And Yum. Cast Iron Dutch Baby with Grilled Peaches is my kids favorite.

I am an avid camper so really enjoyed this book. It's fun, has lots of tips and just makes me wish it was the weekend again so we can escape the city and go camping!

Where was this book back in my camping days? Campers will enjoy this book. lots of good ideas, practical suggestions, recipes galore, etc... I think much of it might even come in handy when cooking out, especially the recipes! The illustrations were cute, but it could have used some photos as well. nice gift for campers!

I had never heard of a campfire cookbook and since my family and I live close to the beach and enjoy having evening fires and dinner on the beach in the summer, I was excited to get this book.

There are a lot of great ideas in the book: such a campfire cookery toolkit and thermos cocktail recipes, fun new takes on a traditional s'more and a recipe for homemade marshmallows.

I really appreciated that there were several fish recipes that could be prepared right on site, around the fire, which is perfect for our beach-side campfires.

This was an interesting and different concept for a book and one that did not disappoint.

Great book. Really unique, with some great ideas for recipes. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Netgalley.

Veteran cookbook authors, Marnie Hanel and Jen Stevensen have again combined forces (they are the authors of The Picnic) to release The Campout Cookbook: Inspired Recipes for Cooking Around the Fire and Under the Stars. For campers, this excellent cookbook has not only great ideas for recipes, but also ideas for building a fire, packing, setting up a campsite, storing food, avoiding problems (like bears, weather problems, and mosquitoes), choosing the right campsite, Camping with your canine, etc.

There are dozens of good recipes that won’t be found in other camping books: Smokey Smashed Potatoes (fabulous!), Roasted Garlic Parmesan Monkey Bread, Spicy Chuckwagon Chili, Red Cabbage, Jicama, and Orange Slaw, Pedal-to-the-Metal Migas, Blackberry Cardamom Coffee Cake, Figgy Pecan Crackers and Whipped Feta, and Forest Fondue to name a few.

The recipes are easy to follow and give instructions for prep at home, and then instructions once at the campsite. There is a primer on foil dinners with lots of ideas, and several of the recipes are made in the Dutch Oven. Some of the recipes are quick and easy; others are a bit more involved, like the Brown Butter Toffee Blondies, which are incredible and worth every minute spent in the kitchen.

The one drawback to this cookbook is that there are no actual photographs of the recipes. There are cute illustrations, but that doesn’t make up for knowing how the recipes are supposed to look. However, the book is good enough that it is definitely recommended for campers everywhere who want to eat well on their camping trips.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

As I am an avid reader, but not too keen on camping, I gave this book to my Scoutmaster and master camp cook husband to review. The following is his review. For my part, I enjoyed the drawings and tasted the recipes he tried from the book. They were terrific!

This is an excellent book that just happens to be a cookbook. It will satisfy the newcomer to preparing meals in the out of doors to those hearty souls that do that sort of thing on a regular basis. The authors obviously have many years of experience and offer tips that only those that have learned them the hard way would know to pass along.

A thorough packing list is provided, should that be needed to get you started, or to complete your existing cook set. Throughout the book are whimsical cartoon drawings and humorous anecdotes. The authors also provide items to keep you entertained around the campfire and activities to help make the entire outing enjoyable.

The recipes offered cover every meal of the day as well as snacks for extra excursions between meals. Taking your dog? Treats for them are provided too. The first recipe that jumped out to me was the Bulgogi Beef Jerky. As a regular consumer of jerky and someone that makes his own on occasion, my taste buds began to dance as I read the ingredient list for this one. The flavor was subtle, not overpowering as one might expect. This was a very enjoyable treat during a hike after making some.

Next up was one of my favorite meals, pork chops. I made the Bone-in Pork Chops with Fresh Sage, Onions and Apples during a winter campout. I should have brought enough to make a double batch as everyone wanted at least seconds. The flavors were bright, and married together perfectly. It will become a staple in my rotation of regular recipes to make on campouts.

What I like most about this book is the variety of cooking methods offered. From foil wrapped to skillet to dutch oven, there is something for everyone. Simple instructions for each recipe will give confidence to attempt them, especially for the beginner. I couldn't give this cookbook a higher recommendation.

This useful volume makes even a dedicated non-camper like me want to try out their tricks and tips, such as 99 Ways (and Counting) to Use a Thermos, and simple recipes for gorp and other trail snacks. Meal recipes include woodfired pizza, roasted chicken, and 12 varieties of s'mores.

First of all, any book that contains TWELVE s'mores variations is automatically my new favorite. Let's just get that out of the way right now.

That said, this is possibly the most charming book on camping that's ever been created. The title is both misleading and not -- there are recipes here that make me want to hit the nearest campsite immediately, for sure, but there's also a WEALTH of information on camping in general, all in wittily-written, easily-digestible (see what I did there?) bites. Everything from identifying plants that will make you uncomfortable to games you can play around a campfire.

Need I even mention the section full of camp-friendly booze? Oh, but yes. It's there.

The illustrations are also amazing. The illustrator did an amazing job here. If the s'mores variations hadn't already compelled me to order a physical copy of this book, the illustrations would have tossed me over the edge. It's just a great, practical book, with drool-worthy recipes almost as a bonus.

(Netgalley gave me a preview copy of this, btw. I would've bought it anyway.)

The recipes for me were too complex for what I consider camping fare. Might be up the alley for those wanting more of a glaming experience.

Extravagant recipes. Swanky ingredients. Gourmet smores. A camping cookbook for Foodies.

THE CAMPOUT COOKBOOK is more than just what the title calls it. It's sort of an all inclusive guide for camping, including in addition to the recipes things like: how to pick out the campsite that's right for you, car games to play while heading out to your camping trip, tips on how to pre-prep your camping equipment (including 99 different ways to use a thermos). Depending on your camping style, it offers recipes for cast iron materials (skillets and pots), dutch ovens, and camp stoves. The variety of recipes included is impressive to say the least, going from snacks you can pack before you even leave to go camping (mason jar style stuff), to main dishes that vary from skillet fried trout to pizza, and everything in between.

The Campout Cookbook would be a great resource for planning a couples or ladies glamping trip. The recipes looked yummy and the instructions easy to follow. It also included tips on picking the location and planning the weekend. However, it would not be the camp cookbook to use if you were planning a trip with children. Granted some children would love the meals, but if you are looking for quick meal to feed a group this would not be my go to cookbook.

Some tasty looking recipes and useful tidbits, but this can best be described as The Hipster’s Guide to Camping. If you prefer a more glamping style of camping, this book is for you, but if you go the traditional route, you may want to look elsewhere.

The Campout Cookbook is packed full of awesome recipes that'll get your mouth watering and make you want to plan a summer filled with outdoor meals and star-filled sky camping.

Up your campfire food with the receipts in The Campout Cookbook.
