I was given the opportunity to read this for review by the publisher, and Net Galley.

When I requested it, I didn't realize it was part of a kit. I don't feel like I can give a completely fair review, which is why my rating is right down the middle. I only have seen the digital copy of the workbook. I cannot tell you what quality the paper or pens ar, or anything else about the kit. I haven't seen it in stores yet. I can only tell you what I think of the info included in the thin book.

With that said, for such a thin book, there is a lot of good info that some other hand lettering books don't really cover.

As someone for whom art is a favorite hobby, I really liked this book as an art project tool. I had some trouble getting it to show up completely on my kindle but the portion I did get was excellent.

A very pretty book of lettering ideas. I enjoyed it.

In a world where everything is typeset and done in a graphics program, it is nice to see the art of hand lettering making a comeback. This book looks at various types of lettering, and breaks them down into easy to understand terms. Well done and easy to use.

Gorgeous book with beautiful writing mg and fun practice ideas. I've gone through several other handwriting books and online courses and this book definitely added a new dimension to decorative writing.

Generally I love all craft books but get more how-to than actual ideas. Not so with this one. Not only do I love it, but it's also packed with detailed instructions and great guidelines for coming up with your own letter art. I do think that in order to get the most out of this book, you need some basic artistic ability. I can't wait to see what kind of "art" I can come up with!

Hand Lettering is a book that will give you a taste of what hand lettering is about. There are different methods on how to draw the different lettering styles. This book wasn't as long as I thought it would be. And I had some technical difficulties with the reading of the book. The "lettering" sometimes did not align correctly so the letters sometimes floated on the page. This was an issue that appeared on the Kindle reading app.

I've always been fascinated by creative, embellished hand lettering, and will admit to being just a bit envious of those who do it well. I certainly don't as my handwriting more closely resembles chicken scratch (no insult intended to the hens who do it much better than I). When I saw Hand Lettering on Netgally, it was an easy decision to request it.

Hand Lettering introduces ten different techniques for lettering embellishment and includes a brief history of each style. I found the history interesting and was a little surprised how many different styles date back to medieval times. The styles include but are not limited to art deco, cubism, southwestern, and coastal. Each style includes illustrations and a breakdown with "How-To" tutorials which I enjoyed. This book includes information on needed supplies and font selection and concludes with information on other special techniques such as illumination, and floral, animal, and object embellishments. Instructions are clear and concise and come with lots of encouragement to practice, practice, practice. When Hand Lettering is released, it will include an art kit which will be nice, I think. All in all, it's a good how-to for anyone wishing to add a little extra flair to their hand-written notes and letters. I rated it 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I just reviewed Hand Lettering by Gabri Joy Kirkendall, Jaclyn Escalera. #HandLettering #NetGalley

Nice lettering book. I wish it was more step by step instructions. It's not a basic lettering book. But gives ideas for more fancy lettering.

This book has a lot of cute lettering and embellishments. The few descriptions are for the more advanced and not beginning artists as the illustrations jump quite dramatically from step to step. It’s mostly pretty lettering to get ideas from.

A quick intro to hand lettering. Be sure to check out the bonus projects online for some interesting ways to include hand lettering in home decor or gift projects. A great guide for beginners or anyone who has looked at fonts on a computer and tried to think how to draw them by hand other than tracing.

Some gorgeous step by step guides to illuminated letters.

Unsure at this point what the included art kit will contain as to the added value of the book.

Content note: cultural appropriation (section on “tribal” lettering includes a dream catcher illustration)

This is a perfect kit for a person that loves the art of calligraphy.
Each type of lettering is explained in an easy way, and the examples are awesome to practice.

This is a good starter book for learning the different types of font styles. Has clear examples and plenty of  background on the styles.

When I saw the title Hand Lettering, I thought this might be a good book for beginners like me to get creative with lettering. After a short intro about hand lettering and explanations of different lettering terms, the authors present ten lettering styles, from Art Deco to Tribal. For each style they show just a few letter examples and list some defining characteristics at the bottom of the page. This is not very helpful for me as a beginner and a visual learner. I was expecting to see a whole alphabet in upper and lower case letters for each style that I can use as a base and make my own. I believe that this base is important for practice and advancing to the techniques that are presented in the second half of the book or making the projects that are featured in the online bonus content .

I did enjoy this book, however I do wish it had more instructions on how to make the different styles. I liked how it gave a brief history of the styles of the letters and gave some different pictures of each style. I think this would work well for the teens and tweens in the library to get a start on some creative lettering styles.

Due out 6th February, 2018 by Gabri Joy Kirkendall & Jaclyn Escalera, Hand Lettering is bundled as a set including a project book, markers, and drawing pencil. The bundle is produced by adult coloring book and art publisher Thunder Bay Press.

This book is very short (64 pages) and what text there is is written in a friendly informal encouraging style. After an oddly involved calligraphy element and illustrated history of writing (appealing, but which took up roughly 10% of the page content), the 10 styles included in the book are presented: Art deco, 'coastal', cubism, garamond, Parisian, mid-century modern, retro, southwestern, and tribal.

Each of the 10 styles is covered with approximately 2 pages each along with a sidebar of 'defining characteristics'. The pages include many examples, and though there aren't any step by step tutorials, there are a number of tips and hints along the way.

The last half of the book includes some tutorial info about special effects, techniques, flourishes, 3D marker techniques, a few project inspirations such as a lettered and drawn illuminated capital, pen and ink scene with lettering, letters with floral and object embellishments, negative space and uses and placement in curved or oddly shaped forms.
At the very end of the book are a couple pages with further inspiration for using brush pens, found objects, cut paper, gouache and metallics, etc.

I received an early galley copy of the project book, so I cannot comment on the quality or colors of the art set which will be bundled with the book. The book itself is accessible to beginners and encouraging and fun. More experienced crafters or calligraphers will perhaps not find so much to challenge them.

Bundle price, according to B&N is $15.59, of course subject to change before release.

Three and a half stars

Hand Lettering is definitely a book that beginners can appreciate, with explanations of simple lettering terms and artistic styles. Also includes bits of information about the history and defining characteristics of each font. Covers techniques of illumination, flourishes, negative lettering, shaping and brush lettering. Bright, colorful, useful, fun and appropriate for tweens and older.

I wish there were some exercise pages included, as I have seen with other books on hand lettering. It would have filled the book out more, and made it more satisfying.

Overall, recommended for beginning letterers and craft-minded people.

Hand Lettering gives readers a look at combining handwriting with art. It offers several styles of letters with their fascinating history and lists defining characteristics for each, with lovely varied examples of each. Ideas and techniques are pictured for all of the lettering styles. There is also a great section on Illuminated letters! I know many of my students will be super excited to check this book out!
