Thank you netgalley and the publisher.

I started this book and could not finish it. This book was not for me but maybe another time.

Liar's Candle, by August Thomas, is an interesting fast-paced political thriller.
21 year old Penny Kessler, an intern at the US Embassy in Ankara, Turkey wakes up in a hospital on July 5th, the day after a disastrous bomb has killed hundreds of people at the embassy's Independence Day party. She is one of the few survivors and her bosses believe she's a crucial witness.
As she struggles to piece together her memories, while being interrogated by her superiors, Penny understands she doesn't know who to trust.
A game of cat and mouse ensues when she suddenly becomes a target leading her to meet an intriguing group of people.
Constant action and drama, Liar's Candle is a suspenseful, engaging read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

This spy/terrorism novel set in Turkey, kicks off with an explosion at the US Embassy which causes massive loss of life. The heroine is Penny, a young intern who survives the bomb, but soon falls under suspicion of involvement. Penny is a very likeable heroine, although her ability to evade capture and her grasp of the various levels of intrigue and corruption stretches credulity at times. I liked the fact that Connor, with whom she teams up, is happily engaged to some one else.

I enjoyed this rollercoaster of a story, although I struggled to keep up with some of the twists and turns - it was the sort of story where (if it had been a movie) I would have been asking my husband to explain what was going on in places. Not too gory and full of action.

Recommended.

Penny Kessler is a young intern working in Turkey at the US Embassy. We first meet her in the hospital recovering after a bomb goes off at the US Embassy during a July 4 party. Hundreds of people have died with Penny being one of the few survivors. Her superiors are grilling her as to why she added a name to the guest list, a guest who has questionable ties to a terrorist group. After being rushed from the hospital, to the compound of the President of Turkey, under the guise of hospitality but in reality to be interrogated, she must decipher who she can trust. With the help of a young CIA operative on his first assignment they work together to unravel the true reason behind the bombing and who is ultimately responsible.
This is a book that is a whirlwind of constant action and drama that keeps you on the edge. I particularly enjoyed the character of Penny Kessler who comes across very naïve but is very smart and intuitive.
A definite read for anyone that enjoys a book full of deceit and double crossing.
